Jerry Newington is having trouble fitting into his new school. No-one is in a rush to extend the hand of friendship, the school bully has him in his sights, and worst of all he has fallen for a girl in his year who doesn’t seem to know he exists.

It’s a long night. Taylor’s attack went on and lasted most of the night. He either passed out from the pain of it all or it finally let him go. He slowly began to untense and unwind about 3:40 AM, we’d gone to bed about 10 so that was almost six hours of holding him and being only able to offer him my small comforts as I held him and watched as he went through hell.

I learned a hard lesson tonight. I learned what it’s like to watch somebody you love more than breathing go through something like this and not being able to do anything about it.

Feels Strange   My relationship with Laurie suddenly comes into sharp focus. It was what? Two months ago that I was having this same conversation with her? Only then I was the one feeling like a fool. If she felt half as bad then as I do now, I really feel sorry for her. I know how Andy must feel having been there myself. I need to try to make him understand that I really do love him, regardless of the motivation which began the relationship. That’s how Laurie got through to me.

I really, really hope this conversation has a similar ending to the one I had with Laurie. At least we won’t be fighting mosquitoes at the same time.

Other days, well, someone else goes for the same mark as you and everything goes wrong. The emergence of meta-humans in the world was never going to affect that too much. Oh, and I'm a naíve fool, did I mention that?

You see, my life was one of the best I could have, coding by daylight and occasionally skimming large sums money off of those who could afford it. But sometimes; sometimes things don't go quite according to plan.

This is one of those times.

"Granny, Granny, please tell us a story! Pretty please, Granny!" said nine year old Linda as she sat on the floor with her twin sister Julia.

They had on matching sky blue blouses and navy blue skorts which each had embroidered a red rose with green stem and leaves as well as the first initial of their name. They both looked precious in their white knee socks and black Mary Jane's. Each of them looked intently at me with their deep blue eyes, resisting the temptation to twirl their long blonde hair in their fingers, since they loved my stories.

Before I could answer, Julia burst out, "Tell us a new one, Granny! Pretty, please!"
