I would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter for participating. In every sense of the word, all of you who entered the contest are winners!!! I wish I had the funding to pay everyone who took the time and entered, but... I simply don't have those kind of resources. I would also like to thank the people who took the time to vote and who read the stories. That is what BigCloset TopShelf is all about! Writing, Reading, Commenting, and Participating.

I will return with presenting the Christmas Holidays contest starting December 1, 2009!

=^.^=

Happy Halloween!

Thank You

It seems this contest brought out the best in BC. There are easily a half dozen stories that could be considered the best -- depending on taste. There is no shame not to be in the top three. In fact, even though you're paying "cash" prizes, there's not a "klunker" in the group.

If your goals were to increase readership and to prompt the writing of a more stories, it appears you succeeded on both fronts. My story received a greater number of hits than other similar stories I've posted.

28 entries by 27 authors - talk about a crowded field!

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to read them all before the deadline, so won't be voting...

...but the ones I have read have been consistently high in quality (well, I wouldn't expect anything else from BCTS!)...

...so I'll offer a hearty (virtual) round of applause to all 27 of you!

* Makes a mental note to watch out for the announcement of the next comp, so I can read the entries as they arrive...

Buridan's ass complex.

Submitted by Ronix on Thu, 2009/10/29 - 12:56am.

Sometimes, honest, it is very difficult to choose between it is equivalent good stories. An original complex Buridan's ass. On the eve I long sat and chose between A and B (voting is not finished!). It was necessary to solve a question as an in good old time - "heads or tails", very much I recommend those who unable to choose the best story. In more difficult cases it is possible to take advantage of dices.

On voting.

Submitted by Maggie_Finson on Thu, 2009/10/29 - 11:33am.

Yes, it is difficult. Every entry in this contest does have good points and the overall quality of the stories was quite good on top of that. Having managed to read all of them, I'll take this time to complement all the other authors who contributed to the contest. No matter who 'wins' the contest, all of you are winners as far as I'm concerned.

What a crop of stories! Good stuff all! Thanks for taking the time to write and share them with everyone here.

As for the voting... I know there are a lot of stories to get through, and though it seems unfair, I'd suggest simply choosing your favorite from those you've read by the time the voting deadline comes and casting a vote. At least that way, Sephrenia will know that people are not only following the contest, but are interested enough to participate in it one way or another.

The above opinions are not those of management, and do not have one bit of veracity other than being an expression of my own thoughts.

Choice voting

With so many good options, we need choice voting, though I can understand why anyone running the contest wouldn't want to try to do that by hand.

It makes sense that someone would have automated that at some point, and seems a shame it got broken. Did you stop using that method because the module broke, or was there another reason?

ALL of the Drupal voting modules are broken

Submitted by Erin on Sat, 2009/10/31 - 7:44am.

They work fine for polls with 2 to 5 choices but our contests usually have about 30 entries, and they won't work now with that many. Something wrong in how the underlying code is using the buffer.

Choice Voting

RAMI

Dear Miranda,

I understand why you would want to have Choice voting here, since in each contest that I have voted in, choicing the best story was difficult, especially when you have so many choices.

But, if someone had to tally votes based on the article you referenced, they would go crazy. I think the author wrote an article witn the goal of confusing the reader.

Probably the best was to do a vote where you can pick more then one candidate is rank the the votes with a certain number of points. If yu can choose up to three, then your 1st place is worth 3 points 2nd worth 2 and 3rd is 1 point. Total all the points and get a winner.

I didn't focus on the technical description in the article, since I have a good idea how it works — some of the municipal elections I vote in use that method. It can be calculated by hand - the method's been in use for over a century, but it's much faster in the days of computers. It has the advantage that when the election is done, I know which city councilor my vote helped elect.

Let's See What Trouble I Can Get Into with This

Submitted by Angela Rasch on Fri, 2009/10/30 - 11:32am.

The City of Minneapolis will have choice voting in the future. Talk radio has spent days trying to explain it. The pundits have had a field day saying it favors the elite, because they're the only ones who have the time and resources to understand it.

I don't have an opinion. Honest -- I don't.

Many people in Minnesota have pushed for choice voting in all state elections so we don't have a repeat of the Franken/Coleman debacle in which Franken was declared the winner over seven months after the election. As far as I'm concerned (here I have an opinion) the only problem with the Franken/Coleman elections was Franken and Coleman. I voted for the third-party candidate.

As far as the point of this thread -- voting for the Horror contest. I think the authors have already won. We write to reach a reading audience. Normally after my stories go off the front page the number of hits falls off a cliff -- to two or three a day. Even though my story "A Night at the Food and Fuel" has been off the front page for some time, it's still receiving a far number of hits each day, which I attribute to people trying to decide which story should get their vote.

Sitting this one out.

Submitted by Rasufelle on Fri, 2009/10/30 - 2:01pm.

I'm not gonna vote this time around, mostly because I haven't and probably won't read most of the stories that were put up for the contest. The ones I read were very good, but I don't think that I could give an accurate judge of best quality if I don't actually read all the stories.

Congratulations to the Worthy Winners

Submitted by Angela Rasch on Sat, 2009/10/31 - 9:29am.

The voting reflects the quality of the submissions. The light number of votes suggests that careful consideration was given by all or most who voted. Good contest. Good results. Two stories that I thought were also excellent were It Just Pours and Bobby's Girl. The Witches Tarot also was captivating, but possibly didn't get as much consideration because it wasn't finished -- although the contest's rules allowed for it's entry as a partial.

Hey! A tie

Submitted by grover on Sat, 2009/10/31 - 11:01am.

for 4th ain't bad considering the company! I'm just happy I was able to come up with an idea at all. I'm afraid that my muse likes magical romantic comedies for Halloween instead of scary stuff. Much to my dismay there isn't going to be a Halloween Fairy Tale story from me this year. Although I batted around some ideas my muse just wouldn't play ball. Perhaps next year.

Congrats to all the winners, but especially to all those who entered. I think we saw some really great entries, but I do hope that all those who has unfinished stories get around to finishing them. You listening Nick, Roberta, Alyssa and all you others?

Hugs!
