The situation I found myself in was catastrophic, owing money to the government and probably not able to meet payroll this week. If I can make it out of this mess in the next few weeks I will be extremely lucky.

I had started the company three years ago. I didn’t plan enough, a month into the startup I was faced with overwhelming problems, mainly a lack of cash to handle day to day operations. A friend talked me into issuing some stock, not publicly traded but for sale to interested parties.

Desert moons always smelled like rust and regret. CL-9C, if the nav log was right, hadn’t seen rainfall in thirty years. Maybe longer. The air shimmered with heat rising off the cracked concrete surface, the dust swirling like a heat haze, a gritty, almost suffocating blanket that clung to everything. The rhythmic thump of the Indira’s engines, a steady pulse against the desolate silence of the moon, vibrated through the floorplates, a constant, almost physical reminder of our precarious existence.

My girlfriend and I had been going steady for almost six months. I was already working, though I had only recently graduated from college. Sherry was still in college, finishing up her last semester.

I was working in the IT department of a local corporation. The job was fairly easy; the only problem was the hours around the weekend. If the gods were with us, the weekend could be enjoyed, but if the servers were acting up on a Friday, the hours piled up as we had to make sure that all was back up and functioning normally for Monday morning’s business.

Having just got home from shopping my wife had placed her goodies on our bed. I watched from the bedroom door, always fascinated at her prowess and enthusiasm with regards to shopping.
