Gender Fluidity

Just read this interesting piece on the NPR website about reactions to Hollins College changing their admissions policy to specifically exclude non-binary applicants. I thought it might add to the ongoing conversation that takes place here, especially in our fiction, on the nature and practice of gender. It also shows pictures of people who most of us would identify as women and yet who don't identify themselves that way.

Diet Imperative!!

Found a couple of nice dresses at Target online. Got my new sundress last week, and a skater dress arrived today.

They fit, look okay, but they'd definitely look a lot nicer if I could shed 15 to 20 pounds. (I'm 5'10" and 196, give or take a few.) Right now, I'm not exactly a quarter-tonner, but I could definitely use a waistline that doesn't look 8 months pregnant.

While I'll likely still be too reserved/shy/terrified/ashamed to wear them anywhere, I'd at least like the idea that I could.

Looking at the wardrobe in my closet, and reading this article, maybe it's time now, finally my time now?

And by the "us" in the title above, I'm referring to cisgendered straight boys who enjoy dressing in traditionally female garments but are afraid to do it in public.

"I Just Became A Girl And I Thought It Was Great"

I've been following the news (and live video) of the new volcano in Iceland. In the course of that, I've taken the chance to poke around RUV's (Iceland's State-Run Television Channel) website for other news stories. Interesting place. I don't speak or read Icelandic, but if you open the web pages in Chrome, there's usually a translate button on the right end of the Location bar (where the URL is) that will get you a somewhat-decipherable English translation. Some words are wildly wrong, but you can't have everything. (Guess!

Tonight, two stories posted back-to-back with remarkably similar premises. albeit one from each side of "The Pond."

Been reading the very excellent "Lifeline" by Cyclist, the story of a survivor of the worst kind of child abuse.

Lo and behold, from the same corner of the world, comes this news story of official neglect and failure at protecting children in care:

One Inch Too Far

All my shoes are from Payless Shoesource, which is now in the process of closing all their stores and going out of business. I'm upset.

They're not great shoes, but they're "good enough" shoes at inexpensive enough prices that I can make a mistake or three and it's no big deal. And they come in my size! Which is a problem anywhere else, unless you're willing to pay a fortune.

Trans Dating Advice

Every once in a while, I check in to read what I find to be one of the more educational, high-spirited, and good-natured love/sex advice columns. This week, Dan Savage has a couple of letters about trans dating, one from a man interested in meeting MTFs and one from a FTM interested in exploring gay male bars.

Don't know if this is relevant to anyone here, but just in case you're nosy about other people's problems, and what sort of advice they get...

Breast Pump Kink?

Here's a (loaded? sensitive? funny?) question...

Ever use a breast pump (electric or otherwise) for erogenous play, either with a partner or solo? Either for nipple stimulation or for anything else. (I'm talking about the kinds normally used by lactating women, but in this case for non-lactation purposes.)

Sign me,

Ummm, just curious.

Trans-Jenner?

There seems to be a controversy regarding Bruce Jenner's recent appearance.

Regardless of the reality of the situation, what I find amazing is the predominant attitude reflected in the comments to that story. It's rather heartwarming, IMHO.

Don't know if anyone is looking for a real-life inspiration for a story, but I was just reading a Wikipedia article about an anti-baldness drug, and in the discussion of its discovery/development was this sentence:

"In 1974, Julianne Imperato-McGinley of Cornell Medical College in New York attended a conference on birth defects. She reported on a group of intersex children in the Caribbean who appeared sexually ambiguous at birth, and were initially raised as girls, but then grew external male genitalia and other masculine characteristic post-onset of puberty. Awesome, Awesome, Must Read!

Wonderful article in The Atlantic about a supportive and loving "man's man" of a father raising a -- in his words -- "gender creative" son.

I must admit to having shed a happy tear or two.

Dr. John Corvino ("The Gay Moralist") frequently gives talks on the religious and moral objections to homosexuality (and thoroughly rebuts them). He gets invited to universities as well as conservative organizations. This is the first time one of his full-length talks (58 minutes) has ever been posted to YouTube. If you're interested in having the arguments to oppose homophobes and transphobes, you might want to watch this. Grab a notepad and pencil first.

As expected, the Supremes have found that if California officials refused to defend Prop 8 in court because they thought it was unconstitutional, no private citizen could defend it, either. This means, the Circuit Court never should have even heard the appeal, and the District Court decision, which found Prop 8 to be unconstitutional, is the final one.

Love The Voice

A great many drag performers go for the grotesque. Jinkx Monsoon (a.k.a. Jerrick Hoffer) seems to go for the ironic. I'm pretty well impressed with the presentation (makeup, wig, outfits, etc.), but it's the voice that's most impressive.

Yes, that's an official Toyota ad. Like, from shown on television. The tagline on screen translates to, "Not in trend, not casual, not for everyone.” Fun, no? Also, no one in Japan is trying to burn down Toyota's factories over this. Can you imagine this ad in the U.S.? LOL

Female Trouble

Went to see my dermatologist today for my annual inspection and tune-up. After the main festivities, I thought to ask him about my thinning hair. I've been using the popular 5% spread on my noggin for the last six months or so, and I don't see much good happening, so I wondered if he had any ideas about what was going on.

"It looks like androgenic alopecia," he said, "and I'm not sure how to say this... It's diffuse and you don't have a receding hairline... I guess we'd have to say it's female-type."

Female pattern hair-loss. Oh, the irony!

I was somewhat surprised to trip over this sex advice column in the Guardian, an entirely respectable daily newspaper in England. It's an old column, from about three years ago, and the columnist doesn't have room to say much, but oh those comments!

I'm curious how folks here would respond to the comments. What do you think of the column and the responses?

Sex Advice For A Transwoman

Don't know how many of you are fans of Dan Savage, the sex advice columnist and gay rights activist, but his new sex-and-relationship-advice show on MTV, "Savage U," is one of my favorites. In episode 5, he sits down with and answers a question from Alexis, a transgender college student in Chicago. The segment begins at the 16 minute mark.
