“Are you certain this is the right path?”

Two figures crept down a narrow underground passageway, shoes slipping across shallow puddles lining the curved concrete floor. Their coats, one jet black and the other a lighter brown, flickered in the weak light offered only by a white crystal held forward by the taller and much darker-skinned man.

“They didn’t provide a map, Callas. I told you the same instructions they told me, and your memory is as perfect as mine. If you think we’ve misapplied the sequence, you should’ve spoken up.”

“Hmm.”

Mark and Maria learn things. And, not good.

We had gotten a letter back from Amy’s mother’s cousin in England that confirmed that one of Amy’s grandmothers was an Indian girl from the ‘Colonies’ by the name of Weetamoo, or as they called her in England, Willow. And Amy was very excited about it. But why can't I feel Amy’s native ancestry like I could our lawyer, Mrs. Edwards?

Now we were over in Muncie, Indiana for Kelly and Larry’s wedding. And we’d met the whole family. Mr. O’Brian had apologized to me. One of Kelly’s brothers, Kevin, I couldn’t read. He was the strong silent type. Another brother, Jack, the priest, I think he tried to get me into a debate over religion, and I quickly quashed that. I hope. And her other brother, Connor had been hurt when the helicopter he was flying crashed. I think he’s lucky to be alive.

We’d spent the evening with Kelly’s family, and the four of us were now on the way back to the hotel. And I asked, “Amy, what were you and Kelly whispering about?”

Just to clarify: Yule Ball is actually on Yule because honestly, having it on Christmas always struck me as stupid because then the students didn't get to go home for Christmas. Because of the procedure that was done the other day to open what was actually my outer and inner labia, I have to take it easy for about three weeks. That sure as heck isn't going to be easy, but if I want to prevent any problems, I'm going to have to suck it up and be tough.

It sure is weird living in a place where everyone else wears female clothes almost all of the time. Well, there are some exceptions, I guess, it seems a lot of girls like to wear boys' T-shirts as night shirts, you know, not quite full nighties for when they sleep.

I'm sure there are other clothing bits and pieces that are male that girls like to wear, but I'm drowning here in a sea of feminine clothing.

I woke up in the back of an ambulance on the way to the Ingalls clinic yet again. Mrs. Giacomo was sitting at the back, looking my way every now and then, I guess, as I caught her doing it the next time and heard her quiet gasp which alerted the paramedic that I was awake.

The paramedic, a somewhat plain looking woman of about thirty maybe, took a minute or two to check my blood pressure and temperature, and then grabbed a stethoscope to listen to my heart and lungs, just to make sure they were working properly, I suppose.

We spent two weeks on the initial aspects of Meadowcroft, and while we were not precisely surprised at what came out from under a Bradford stone the team’s reaction was a revelation.

Reality had descended on us in a big way after the whirlwind of our original tasking, for the police drama depiction of dedicated sleuthing is utter rubbish. We don’t spend months on one case, patiently sifting evidence before moving to a conclusion, but rather take on a job, a case. Then another. And another.

A letter from England. Back at the O’Brians.

Larry had a nasty run-in with his future father-in-law and had received a black eye. The crew had gotten together to not only comfort Larry but to try to figure why it happened and what to do about it. Amy had concluded that Kelly’s dad might be having a nervous breakdown.

The Chief Nastas Todachine Memorial Scholarship was finally a go.

Today, Saturday, we had some fun when all the bride maids in Kelly’s wedding came to town for dress fittings. And Tammy went along. Of course, only Amy, Kelly, and Maria knew that Tammy wasn’t a real girl. It appeared that Kelly and Maria were a little nervous undressing in front of Tammy. But a talk afterward seems to have gotten them to understand who Tammy is. Maybe.

And now the crew was coming over for frybread tacos. And lessons on how to make frybread. So after Amy and I were back home, Tammy became Kai. A blond Kai. Well, we need a Southwestern girl to make a Southwestern meal. Don’t we?

Anil looked up at Paige and knew that he wasn't going anywhere, but seeing Elise caused him to try to back away in fear before Paige could ask him anything. Elise was told to go back to the car and stay there, she would handle Anil as Elise was just scaring him and making things worse for the boy.

The four adventurers followed the river upstream, slowly gaining elevation as they did so.

As the day waned, Goruza and Emerald allowed Star and Champ to graze, while Milah sent her wolf Ajax off into the woods to hunt, and Tamarie went to the river to catch some fish for supper.
