Our first morning in the UK was brighter, a communal breakfast taken in the conservatory and garden, bunkhouse style in the way everyone clubbed together. I still felt like shit, my usual reaction to long haul flights, but Maz and I had been woken by our daughter at about seven, Maz pretending to be asleep even after a prod from the girl. I understood why when LC finally turned to me for permission.

“Dad?”

“Yes, love?”

The slightest of twitches from her, and then that surge of confidence, or maybe hope, that warmed my heart.

“Can I play with the dogs again?”

“Let’s split, babe,” Bernard whispered as he grasped her hand.

“Willow – go. We’ll stay here and handle any flack the haters give us,” her Poppa breathed into her ear.

She shook her head emphatically. “No! I want to hear where he goes with this.”

The seldom used deck was the perfect venue. It was elevated and had an awning for protection from the weather. Being attached to the sunroom made the deck seem bigger than its actual size was to Lori. The deck’s elevation along with their home being on a hilltop gave a great view of the Mon Valley. This vantage point made Lori feel so important on sitting on the deck.

At the end, after the word usage notes, is the Poem ‘Taffy was a Welshman’ which is vaguely relevant to the story. I’d had the vague outline of the story in my mind for a few days. Some details were inspired by comments I read on BCTS suggesting Taffy can only be a woman’s name – I assume those comments originated in the US, in the UK it is different. Robin too like a number of other essentially female names in the US is essentially a man’s name here. The highly respected, polite and competent anchorman on the 12/12/19-13/12/19 overnight ‘Election 2019’ BBC program was Welshman Huw Edwards, and watching the election coverage gave me more pieces for the story. Then a friend came over to use my Bridgeport milling machine to remove a broken half inch stud from a casting and the detail was virtually finalised. Taffy is also a chewy toffee or candy in the UK, but that didn’t help me write the story at all.

With a second wind, Swan Diva resumed fighting to help push back the mask bearers. Captain Patriot finally sat back at the end of his first. Near boundless energy, that one, just like his father said once or twice.

Pixeletta’s voice came over the earpiece, “Is anyone else near ‘The E?’ I spotted someone dressed suspiciously. Approaching now.”

Suspicious how? An uneasy feeling hit the pit of Swan Diva’s stomach.

When I got up that morning things were different. My room, once decorated in brilliant colors, was now drab and dirty. I kept my room spotless. I smiled; someone was playing a trick on me. I sat up and found I was wearing boys’ flannel pajamas. OK, where’s my nighty? I got up to go take care of business in the bathroom. I pulled down my pajama bottom to find not only that I was wearing boys’ underwear, but as I looked down, I saw clearly that I had a penis!

There was a lot more discussion, but in the end, it was quite a simple process, if long-winded. Bennett agreed to send everything necessary to the Cannock house, where Dad would arrange for Carol or Pete to pick up the mail and forward it to one of our safe places on the road.

“Will she be able to apply for a provisional licence now? Start driving and that?”

“I can’t see why not, Mr Petrie. She’s old enough, and you have a permanent residence, even if you don’t actually seem to reside there very permanently. Forms are in any Post Office. You will just need to put her on your insurance, of course"
