For me, the main effort was going into the winter catalogue. I went traditional for this, with coloured balls, holly leaves, and snow drifts in the coats and jackets section. The interior outfits had warming fires, Christmas trees and decorations. All six of us were featured, this time mixed up on the pages.

Good Grief, can it really be? Charlie Brown and Snoopy have just turned 40. I mean, it was a shock when I recently turned 40, but how can Snoopy be 40? Even if you count in dog years it seems incredible. I mention this because I have had an image of Snoopy in my mind lately. The image is the one where old Snoops is clinging to the roof of half a doghouse, the lower half having been swiped away in one snarling swat by the cat next door.

My name is Eugene, ‘Gene’ for short. I have three sisters who, when it all started, were 19 and 17, and 13. I was 15. I am the only boy. Mom and Dad must have had some kind of routine, since all of our birthdays are in August. I always view the Thanksgiving turkey with some suspicion - you do the math; how many months from Thanksgiving to August.

There are never enough bathrooms or hot water in a house occupied by three teenaged girls. Accordingly, I plan my bathroom visits with care around their expected bathroom use. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

With my new job I am living in a two room apartment all by myself on weekdays. Thursday morning Amy and I were up very early. We knew that the hotel’s restaurant served a continental breakfast starting at five. But we wanted to take showers before breakfast. No, not together. If we did that, we’d never make it out of the room.

Once we were ready, we walked to the restaurant and had breakfast. We had told my aunt, uncle, and mother what we were going to do for breakfast. And just as we were finishing our breakfast, they joined us. We talked while Amy and I finished our meal. Then as we were getting ready to leave Uncle Paul asked, “Are you ready for today?”

“I guess I’m as ready as I will ever be.”, I replied.

I hate Philadelphia. Well, maybe that's a bit too harsh. I hated living in Philadelphia. I took a job that made me move to Philadelphia once and lasted precisely one and a half weeks before I ran screaming back to my rural home and continued unemployment. But perhaps I was a bit hasty, for now it seems the enlightened curators of the Museum of Art there have declared my favorite fetish to be a legitimate subject of cultural study.

My mom let me take some time to compose myself before she started the car. Again, she didn’t ask anything. I don’t know what she thought happened in there, but I don’t think it was as bad as what actually happened.

When the sniffles had stopped I asked her, “Where are we going next?” Trying to pretend that nothing had happened.

“Well I had a couple appointments scheduled, unless you want to just go home.”

My name is Donald Edward Johnston. I am nineteen years old. I graduated from high school last year. I was still looking for work. So far, I have not found one place that would hire an inexperienced young man like me.

The only real option I have is working for a fast food place. I do have a driver’s license, maybe I could deliver pizza. I do need to find a job. Next semester, I will be going to college. But, in the meantime, I need a job. The problem is, where am I going to find work?
