Jem...Chapter 16

Jem…Chapter 16

Chapter 16

I can believe that way that Summer just sang that and took the bow and the praise along with that little fucking speech she just gave everyone. I look at Raven and she’s just sort of staring at the stage like she’s in shock. I grab Brooklyn’s arm before she takes off at the stage after Summer... and Roxy is looking at me all teary eyes but hurt and freaked with this what do we do look.

I get up in front of them all and wait until I see them breaking down their stuff. “Okay, C’mon.” I haul Raven up to her feet and take her by one hand to the stage and there a few tense minutes of not saying anything and it was really, really nearly a fight. There was a lot of temptation there and I had to keep telling Brooklyn. “No…no. We out play them.” We recheck things and I set up the video stuff and the tip box and watch Rave watching summer with her tongue down the throat of what could be only that guy Muzz.

Dude is so fake it’s almost stupid. Union Jack sleeveless t-shirt and black pvc pants like they’re supposed to be real leather and studded wrist bands and “snake skin boots’ he’s like a walking cliché. Well a walking unshaven cliché that hasn’t heard of the concept of soap. The fact they were using tongues and considering his hygiene odds are he didn’t have a friendship to his toothbrush.

I go over to Raven. “Are you going to be okay?”

She just shrugs, tuning her guitar.

“Look she did it, she’s a bitch of the worst fucking kind and Scunts like her always get what’s coming to them.”

“Maybe…”

“Maybe look at what she has pawing her you can’t tell me that he’s the prize for Christ’s sakes Raven look at him she’s boffing Iggy Pop’s retarded crack head little brother.”

She smiles just a little bit around the edges.

“We can do this, we’re better than Sucks off a Thornbush.”

Another bit of a smile…god part of me loves making her smile. She says softly with a hint of a laugh hidden in there. “Sucks off a Thornbush huh?”

“Yeah, it fits okay some of their songs were good and that last one was written beautifully but we have the original songwriter here…so what do you have that we can play?”

“Nothing…”

“Bullshit, I write too Rayne and when it comes to stuff like this that’s what we do. We write and sing and we play it out so do you have something?”

“Y…yeah…”

“You got music it?”

“Yeah it’s simple though.”

“Write it down, gimme the words…”

“No.”

“No?”

“I...I have to sing it…”

“Okay cool, just give us the notes then.”

She starts to write stuff down by hand and I see Mike come in and a number of faces from the mall including the Hindu fellow that ran the mall, Richard from Home Hardware with what looks like his wife and a few guys from there still in their work shirts and not long after that Ian and Steven with a few friends….holy crap there must be thirty or forty people here…I get waved at and I wave back.

Brooklyn looks at me and so does Raven and Roxy. “What? I said I told a few people.”

They grin and even Raven looks like she’s shaking it off.

Summer is looking at the influx of people and the waves and from them to me and back again and she leans against the pit-stain she’s calling her guy but crosses her arms looking very pissed off.

I look at Raven. “You ready?”

“Yeah but I’m nervous about singing.”

“Don’t be…Rave you’re rock-emo-goth-punk…anyway…you’re in black with all your piercings in and your hair down and in a coffee shop getting ready to play a gig…hell this is home turf right?”

She actually smiles a bit and I smile back and walk backwards giving Roxy the nod.

Roxy stars drumming and Brook has the tambourine and the base tune starts up and I’m playing as I’m walking back from Raven and no intro yet I want them to get a taste first. There’s nothing like the tambourine to get the bodies moving though…I still need to get us a ukulele.

We open with “Soul Sister.” By Train.

It’s a really good tune with the “Hey’s” getting into the crowd and the dancing that we do and I definitely do on the stage and me and Raven singing it together to/at each other I keep her eyes mostly on me but we look to the crowd too. It’s both of us singing at the same time and not a duet but like we’re singing it for each other. It’s already working getting them moving and the people that are kind of friends and stuff like Ian and Steven and their dates and stuff and Richard and his girlfriend are standing so they kind of start dancing.

We go right from that to “Boots of Chinese Plastic.” By The Pretenders.

I step right up and eat the mike and belt out the superfast tune and the girls really, really play there’s some serious guitar there and while that fast licks are going without my vocals I’m dancing my ass off shaking everything and tossing my hair left and right my hair and just cranking out the energy and getting it back as the crowd starts to move.

It’s a short tune and when it’s done I giggle-laugh into the mike and. “Whew! Had to get that out of my system (Big smile) hi I’m Jem…” I get a heckle from what sounds like Summer.

“And the holograms…Lose-R!”

I stay smiling. “Yeah sort like that; sorta not I’m more like what happens when Gene Simmons ends up using Mary-Kay.”

There’s some laughs in the crowd and Raven actually grinds out the opening licks to Kiss’s “God Of Thunder” before waving her off grinning.

“Okay…seriously everyone thanks for having us here tonight and this is the debut act for the re-vamped and renewed Starlight Butterfly!”

I go through and intro the girls. “Well I talked long enough I mean we’re her to play for you all right!”

The crowd yells. “Right!”

“Okay!...one..two..One, two, three four!”

We go right into Joan Jett’s “A.C.-D.C.” More great guitar girly rock with really high energy and I sing this one along with Raven and Brooklyn there’s some dancing and a lot of clapping as we belt out the tunes there’s a few places that we’re singing all three of us together in a row one the main microphone and Roxy is a beast on the drums. This is a great song for drums and we really hammer it out and go fast and straight into another great girl-rock tune.

“Because I’m Awesome!” By the Dollyrots.

Then once the groove is going we trot out “Walk like an Egyptian.” By The Bangles and that get’s most of the girls in the place bopping with me as I hopefully get the dance moves right. We still get the shouted “Oh-wey-oh!” especially when I point the mike out at the crowd and they take up the invitation.

We stop and grab some of the waters I brought for us and take a drink and I walk/pace to cool myself. “Yeah, that was way more like it you guys are awesome! But we’re here at a coffee shop and I’ve always wanted to sing this song at a place like this…you guys good with that?”

They yell. “Yeah!”

I gulp down some water and then I give the girls the nod and Brooklyn switches to an acoustic and I relax into the song and get close to the front of the stage.

“Drove downtown in the rain… (The whole place starts clapping.)”
“nine thirty on a Tuesday night.”
“Just to check out the late-night…” I point the mike to the crowd and they all sing.

“Record shop!” ………..God I love this.

“Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane…”
“But when I’m surrounded I just can’t….stop.”

“It’s a matter of instinct, it’s a matter of conditioning.”
“It’s a matter of fact.”
“You can call me Pavlov’s …dog.”
“Ring a bell and I’ll salivate…How’d you like that?”
“Dr. Landy tell me you just not a pedagogue…”

“’cause right now…”

“I’m lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.”
“Well I’m lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did…”

The song is one of my favourite tunes and a lot of peoples too, there is just something hypnotic to the way it’s played and the lyrics that makes “Brian Wilson” by the Bare-Naked-Ladies almost iconic like a lot of their tunes. This song belongs in a John Cusack movie. There are parts to it that just beg to be sung along with. I’m no Stephen page but instead I try to put this almost Alanis Morissette sound to my voice when I sing it.

There’s a lot of clapping when we finish that and some more water and Raven walks over to me. “Can we switch out now? I need to sing a bit before we’re done. You know one hand?”

“Yeah sure.”

“Okay, I...I’m going to sing that first and then we’ll do the new song?”

“Sounds good Rayne.” Then she gives me this look through the sweat damp hair. “Oh no…It’s Raven.”

She’s either pissed or she’s got her second wind but she just cat walk sways up to take the mike and does this sexy hair flip and talks into it. “Hey, I’m Raven and It’s my turn to sing…just please bear with me it’s been awhile but this song is about my Ex-girlfriend but I’m dedicating it to myself…”

She does that lean forward and back a bit with the rhythm of the song as we’re playing the music for. I can’t help but to smile as Raven starts to sing. “One Hand in My Pocket.” By Alanis Morissette. And as she’s singing the words I can see her standing up to the scunt in that you didn’t break me way.

“I’m broke but I’m happy.”
“I’m poor but I’m kind.”
“I’m big but I’m healthy…”
“Yeah!”

“I’m high but I’m grounded.”
“I’m sane but I’m overwhelmed.”
“I’m lost but I’m hopeful!”
“Baby!”

“What it all comes down too…”
“Is that everything’s going to be..”
“Fine, fine, fine!”

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one’s giving a high-five!”

“I feel drunk but I’m sober.”
“I’m young and I’m underpaid.”
“I’m tired but I’m working…”
“Yeah!”

“I care but I’m restless.”
“I’m here but I’m really gone.”
“I’ve be wrong but I’m not sorry!”
“Baby!”

“What it all comes down to…”
“Is that everything’s gonna be quite alright!”

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one is flicking a cigarette.”

Then she’s dancing like she’s dropped this weight off her shoulders and Brooklyn has a harmonica out and is playing through that part of the song. Raven’s even shaking her head with the music while hanging onto the mike stand then steps right back up again.

“And what it all comes down too…!”
“is that I haven’t got it figured out just yet…”
“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket…”
“and the other one’s just for her…!”

And she gives the middle finger to where summer might be at and I can’t help but to smile at her doing that, at her taking enough of herself back to do that. And yeah…she changed a few of the words but I like this version better. And did you know that the f-u finger was the original for the song Alanis had but the studio made he change it?

“I’m free but I’m focused.”
“I’m green but I’m wise…”
“I’m hard! But I’m friendly…!”
“Baby!” ………………. Okay all the girls in the place just shouted it with her.

“I’m sad but I’m laughing.”
“I’m brave but I’m chickenshit…”
“I’m sick but I’m pretty…Baby!”…….again the girls are yelling it..they’ve been there.

“And what it all boils down too…”
“Is that no one’s got it figured out just yet…”
“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket.”………Brooklyn starts more harmonica.
“and the other one is playing the piano…”

“And what it all comes down too my friends…”
“Yeah…”
“Is that everything’s just…”
“Fine, fine, fine…”……………..The girls in the crowd are joining in with those now too.

“’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket….”
“and the other one is hailing a taxi cab!”
The song winds down with us playing and Brooklyn trailing off with the harmonica solo fading us out.

There people that we’re standing who are standing now and Raven steps back and runs a hand through her hair and blows out a big breath of nerves and takes a water from Brooklyn drains a lot of it and then give us the nod and we start to play the notes she wrote down for us and she moves with the mike stand dancing with it.

“This is a song I wrote just two days ago when everything was wrong and everything was hurting and she made it so, right…Angel this songs for you…It’s called Billie Holiday.”

Oh…I get this huge, huge fucking lump in my throat and just her saying something like that just. I’ve never had someone do something like this before. And she gives me this long, long look before closing her eyes and starts to sing.

“I thought I was going to be the hero.”
“When I found you there all alone.”
“So alone…”
“Lonely and cold.”

“But it was you that picked me up when I had fallen.”
“Turned my grey skies into sunshine…and I remember…”
“Oh I remember thinking, blue, blue eyes and that smile…”
“When do Angels wear that much make-up…”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you.”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday.”

“I took you in but you gave me shelter.”
“You taught me that I wouldn’t be broken forever.”
“You make it better…”
“You made it better…”
“You made me believe in love again…!”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you.”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday…”

“When I’m with you I feel safe now…”
“Oh so safe now…!”
“No more crying in the shadows…”
“No more cutting, no more shame…”
“No, no, no…!”

“Oh come here a little closer.”
“Just let me wrap my arms around you…”
“So I can say…so I can say…”
“You’re my Billie Holiday…”

“You are my candle.”
“You are my light.”
“You are a love song.”
“You’re my flame…”

“Oh…sweet, sweet Angel…”
“You’re my Billy Holiday…”

I can barely see her through the tears that are completely destroying my make up and I can’t breathe right and my heart…god can feeling this good, wanted…special kill you? I can’t get the smile off of my face though and…

God…!
Oh God…!
No one’s ever, done this for me…!

By the time I can see I’m looking into Raven’s eyes as she’s playing the final song and I’m playing it too and I think we’re both so emotional we play a bit long and Brooklyn steps over to the empty mike and starts singing us out as the last song we planned on.

“That’s it folks, last song of the night.”

I’m still crying and just trying to get a grip and staring over at Raven too as we play out singing along with Brooklyn to close down our show with “Two for the show.” By Trooper.

The lights are dimmed somewhere during Raven’s last song and there’s lighters out, people swaying and holding their S.O’s and the older parts of the crowd are singing along to it.

It’s been bad, it’s been good…Hell I think this is the best night of my life.
