German Gaby etc - an update

You may recall I posted about my desire to make at least some of my scribbles available in other languages, firstly in German.

Rather than go pell mell into it I started with a sample chapter and sent it to someone with a good understanding of English as well as being a native German speaker. Now I know it's not perfect, I expected it to need a bit of tweaking on spellings/tenses but with my limited German skills I could follow the general gist of things. but apparently it made little sense to a German.

The world of steam.

Author:

Many people forget that in the 1800's - early 1900's it was the age of steam.

Sure there was great ships powered by steam.

Sawmills powered by steam.

But that wasn't all.

The greatest use of steam was for central heating. Many a city had boiler plants that made steam for hospitals, houses, businesses. All that steam, and there was a heck of a lot, was generally produced offsite at a large boiler plant.

have you ever regretted reading a story?

My husband and friends tease me that i'm such a bleeding heart. I'm a very forgiving person and I'm told i'm gentle, I don't even really express anger.

I also love to read, and for some reason I have a weird fascination with revenge/punishment stories. Perhaps because I was raised in a household where extreme punishment was the norm.

But this fascination has lead me to read a lot of stories that I regret reading because they eat at me inside. Has anyone else experienced this?

Any stories like "Orphan" by Susan Brown?

Forums:

I stumbled upon the fictional story of "Orphan" a few days ago by a wonderful author named Susan Brown and absolutely loved it! It was a lovely story and I quickly blazed through it. Since then, I've been searching for somthing similar but haven't had much luck, any suggestions would be fantastic! The story itself was under the headers of : Girl's school/ School girl, Child, Cross dressing, In Hiding, On the run, Disguises.

Our president elect has been making conciliatory remarks about working together and leading the whole country. This is hard to believe, after the campaign, but I think we should give him a chance. Perhaps the weight of the office will make him act more like a human being.

There used to be a tradition of giving the new president, a honeymoon period to hit the ground running (I don't think Obama was given one).
I think it is a tradition worth renewing.

I was watching a tv show. A super hero show.

Why is it that even though the police chase is like 30 stories straight down the "hero" has to take a LONG way to get there?

In batman he drives for like minutes to go less than a block away?

Superman/girl fly around at great speed in the clouds to go almost straight down?

I just found it amusing. Silly in extreme but amusing.

Story Inspiration

Practicing some radical distraction, I was cruising YouTube when I found an hour long video of "Similarillion", a JRR Tolkien story about the beginning of all things. I was actually quite lovely. Then moving on I found a series of beautiful and astonishing videos by Skyrim that were so impressive to me. How do they write the code to do that and then to make the figures move so realistically? Then the scum on the bottom included some Rape Fantasy videos, apparently many countries outlaw them, but it does not seem like America does. :(

I have a curious question that may develope into something more.

So let's say you're playing an MMO and you have made your character as a female (or male as you prefer) and you've been enjoying yourself. Suddenly you find yourself yanked into the world of the game, where you are not only the gender you chose in character creation but also the same class and race.

Would you want to leave? Would you try? What would you do in this new existence?

The World’s Most Famous WAR MEMORIAL POEM
By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Declining chapter reads

I've noted how many authors get discouraged about how readership drops off after the first chapter is posted. I did some research and discovered some interesting facts about the way the system does and doesn't count page views.

First of all we know a number of people open the first chapter and decided the story isn't their cup of tea and stop reading. Then there are others who read each chapter and open it up individually and while there is often continued dropoff it isn't as severe as from the first chapter to the second.

I will answer any questions that people have, but I don’t want to blow my own horn. The closest I have come to this is the mini story I added the other day as a companion piece to Alexa.

In this age of Twitter and texting everything seems to get reduced to a few short letters or worse, an emoji. The beauty of words gets lost when reduced to a few short letters.

I am sure that it lends a certain verisimilitude to a story to drop in the current vernacular of acronyms but somehow LOL does not carry the same impact as imagining someone actually laughing out loud. In this attention deficit designed world I am sure there are many who assign their own meanings to common acronyms thus widening the breach of understanding rather than narrowing it.

Is this a taboo, or something others have done before? If I thought the author would continue the work, I'd leave it alone. But I feel that it is "abandoned" and I want to salvage it, if that makes sense? Is this a bad idea, or should I pursue it?

I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, if not the admin can remove it.

I cross path with a MtF today one time when I was entering the Place Bonaventure garage, and you where exiting it at 6 in the morning.

Arwel Powell

Blog About:

Author:

One of my favourite characters is a deep, loving man of fierce protectiveness and uncommon good sense. His name is Arwel Powell, and one of the best descriptions of him is as an iceberg, showing very little of the depth of his personality on the surface. He is based on a real person, a family member, and I found out today that the original for my character has just been given five months to live.

Words do fail me occasionally.

Scammer call

I just got off the phone and I'm very happy. Every now and then I get a call from an number with identity concealed. The call is always made by a person of middle-eatern or far-eastern origin. The accent sounds indigenous to India. These persons call and claim they are with Windows or MicroSoft. (Yes, I said that correctly. They allude to Windows being a separate entity.) Well I have been friends with a person that actually does work for MicroSoft in Seattle and verified that the callers are scammers. Now I do all I can to frustrate them on the phone. Today was a new personal best.

SEE Commentaries #4 - #6

As before, these are notes which explain my thought processes and decisions while writing SEE, provided here as a service (or a warning!) to other writers.

These three chapters have only minor adjustments in general. The usual things like Capitalization and fixing typos. There are a few cases where I have changed "Yes" to "Aye" but in the main it will be difficult to spot most alterations. I have slightly changed one or two speeches but nothing that has any major significance.

When Jessica's hair was black

Author:

Ran across this young lady's picture last week. Immediately thought she had enough hair for two women. Jessica Rabbit immediately came to mind. A beautiful young lady, her makeup was perfect. Notice the intensity in those captivating eyes.

Call me "the baby whisperer"

Blog About:

Well, maybe you should call me "the baby whisperer".

See. while I was doing my rounds, I heard a little girl crying. As we approached each other, I started talking to her in a soft voice about why she was sad.

She immediately stopped crying, and looked at me in shock.

Then, as her mother took her away, I could see the corners of her mouth go up as she was obviously trying to hide a smile ...

Stuff like that makes my days better, you know?

Status update on recent happenings in my life.

For those of you who even care to read these blogs then watch and read as I explain what has happened over the last month and why I haven't been around as much as I'd like to be.

To start I guess I should mention a few things. First I was diagnosed with Parkinson's about a month ago. Secondly i'm mute(not deaf there is a difference) which means I can't talk. I lost my means of talking at 12 years old. This has been eating me up for a while and it drove me to the brink of suicide. It took a fellow BC'er talking me out of it to come to my senses.
