How did I get into this?

This blog entry contains several questions. I'd be pleased if any other readers or authors here were able to respond.

Have you ever stumbled across an author's work, and thought to yourself "this is really good, I'm going to read any material of theirs that I find"? You know, the sort of writing that you find you can't put down; that you find yourself still reading at 1am.

Half Lilin Rewrite

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Thank you to those who mailed me asking me when I would continue to story. I'm sorry that it took me so long to continue. I just had a tiny bit of problem. Still has, but I think I'll try to ignore it and just start writing again.

However, when I reread the story earlier, I was horrified at the lack of imagery in the story. I mean, I know how it goes, how the characters look like because I can see them all in my head. The readers can't see what I see, so I decided to do a rewrite. Nothing major, but I will try to address the problem with giving more life to the characters.

(US) House Votes to Expand Definition of Hate Crimes

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

From today's New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/09/us/politics/09hate.html

This is step towards expanding "the definition of violent federal hate crimes to those committed because of a victim’s sexual orientation, a step that would extend new protection to lesbian, gay and transgender people."

Internet problems solved?

I'm possibly tempting providence, but I hope that thanks to a new modem/router and finally getting around to using a new computer I've had in the box for about three years, my internet problems are over (touch wood). It's very late so I'm off to bed.

hospitals and stuff

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I have decided I don't care much for hospitals and emergency rooms at the moment. You go in and they want to poke, prod and otherwise torture you, when all you wanted in the first place was one simple little shot adenosine to stop the tachycardia. Finally escaped after 4 hours, with the last 2 sitting and waiting for someone to say I could leave...

And to top it off, my head is throbbing now. Time for Ibuprofen annd a nice warm bed

Mantyhose?

It’s a trend the makers of 1993 spoof movie Robin Hood: Men in Tights, obviously didn’t envisage, but the market for men’s hosiery has reportedly taken off in recent years.

Last month UK department store Selfridges responded to the demand and began stocking (no pun intended) a range of extra-tough tights designed exclusively for men.

Hello my friends at BC!!

Well, I was given a big shock today. This coming Friday will be my last day at a company where I have worked for 14 years. Basically, it is the economy. Being single. Less money coming into the company, etc, etc. I was told I will receive a full month's pay check at the end of the month. Then another week into November.

Done and done - finally

Hoorah!

We are finally in our new home.

The move started at about 12:30 pm Wednesday and finished about 3:30 pm Saturday.

We moved ourselves as I said we'd do and I don't mean to sound as if I knew best because I didn't. Every time we filled the van, more stuff started to appear and at one stage, I was positive that the chattels fairy was following us around, bringing stuff back from the new house and depositing it in the old one for us to move again and again and again.

Argh!

…did you ever–?

I never cease to be amazed about the mind-boggling things I learn from BBC Radio 4. About 5 minutes ago I learned that King Edward VII had a golf bag made out of an elephant's penis. Evidently it was presented to him by an Indian Maharajah. The same programme informed me that "Snow Golf" was invented by Rudyard Kipling when he painted his balls red.

As I said before, the mind boggles.

So what mind-boggling facts have you learned from the radio/tv?

Right now it shows the title and author of up to 20 stories on the front page that were posted in the last 50 hours. Currently, this only shows for people using the BigCloset theme, not Reversi or most of the other themes.

I'll make it look prettier later, it's late tonight. :)

Hi. When I come to this site, or go to another chapter or something after being on the same page for a while, I am redirected to amazon. It is actually two seprate amazon pages. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it?

Two years off prescription drugs

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Right after I got back from Thailand and SRS, I noticed that I was about 60lbs over what I had been when I started this whole TG debacle. It took a while for the storm to develop but about a month after I got back I sat down with my Shrink, who I was seeing once a week, and told her that she could help me or not but I was off the Prescription Drugs. She tried to say that I needed them but then I reminded her that I spent most of 57 years not on drugs, aside from sleepers once in a while. She also asserted that I as a Border Line Personality person could not handle life with out them.

tg case in alberta could be historic

This case of a transgendered teacher here in alberta could end up being historic. Right now, transgendered persons are not protected under our human rights laws. If the courts so choose however, they could "read it in", and force the goverment to change the law, like what happened 10 years ago with gays. Here is hoping thats what happens.

Some people are misunderstanding something here. The Retro Classics are being brought back so you can see what our writers were like in the past and what we have hidden in the author lists. This is not some game about trying to have everything complete - because not everything here can be completed. Some of our authors have died, others... in more trouble than most of us can know. Others decided to stop writing. But what they left behind is a treasure for us to gaze upon. We can learn from what they did and write new things.

Thoughts after Southern Comfort

When I arrived in Atlanta for Southern Comfort, I was as nervous as the long tailed cat in the room full of rocking chairs. I wasn't sure what to expect or how I should act. What I didn't expect, was the love, compassion, understanding, and support I received, even being just a first timer.

I received and gave more hugs in one week, than in my entire lifetime. NO one had a bad word to say about ANYONE, and everyone was amazingly open and caring. I talked to more girls in the space of the week, than I ever thought possible, and we had a BALL!!!

There are recurring stories about plagues or diseases decimating (I use the word in its modern sense, not the Roman one of one in ten) humanity. There has not yet been a disease that took more than one in three of the population, which is not to say that a more virulent disease could not arise in the future.

However, if we experienced now a plague which took one in three, the problems are that first our medical resources would be overburdened to breaking point, and so would all our infrastructure.

Our civilization is now so complex that it could not survive a plague of this magnitude.

Researchers at insect charity, Buglife, said last year's wet autumn meant the larvae of daddy longlegs had plenty of decaying plant matter to eat. Experts also said this year's temperate summer had been good for spiders.

Am I the only one reading Murphey's Law (Revised)? I have never read the original story, but to me this story has all of the elements that makes a great mystery. I have compared this story to the ones written by Dashiell Hammett and Agatha Christie. This whodunit takes place in the 1960's and is a very good story. Everybody who hasn't read the original should read this one, because Murder She Wrote has nothing over Murphy's Law (Revised). And even the ones who read the original story should read this one again.

Recently two very good authors suggested to me that they wanted my help to make sure their stories didn't cross the line into femdom. They were concerned about adverse reader reaction. Arrrgh!

The challenge ends September 21, 2009, but of course, you can write more such stories after and tag them with the Back-to-School category, they just won't be eligible for the non-existent prizes in this non-contest. :)

Saotome and Tendo family video profiles

Okay, there is this guy on YouTube that seems to have made it his mission to profile everyone in the Ranma ½ Universe, but most of them, really... are kinda crap. Little more than fanboy fap-bait. Some are good... but these four... these are EXCELLENT:

There are some general info profiles if you want to look through this guy's other Ranma ½ Character Profiles, but really... he doesn't seem to get a lot of the characters. Of particular interest to the crowd here at TopShelf may be the (rather insultingly done) profiles of Kurenai Tsubasa and Kuonji Ukyou.

Kittyhawk Goof

I made a mistake on Kittyhawk 10 that I just fixed. It involves the conversation between Melissa and Tina on the plane. I mistakenly had Melissa saying she's not into girls, which of course she is! Since that affects her relations with Arachne, which Tina says is interested in Melissa, I thought I should point it out. Sorry for the confusion!

Saless

P.S. Thanks to John for pointing the error out to me, I really appreciate it!

9 year old changes gender

I found online an article from the Sun newspaper in England that a 9 year old child has transitioned from boy to girl. I dont know how reliable a sourse they are, as they also have an article saying they found a picture of the loc ness monster on google earth. But, if its true, i feel kinda conflicted. I am happy for this girl, but part of me worries that this is too early. I would have taken a transition at 9, and it might have been a mistake. I just hope she doesnt end up regretting her decision.

Melissa Dawne Northe, my Sister by choice has her auto biography A Tragedy Of The Spirit posted here, and her friend Melanie Dixon authorized my posting of the revised version.

We both wish that her friends would either leave a PM with me. or Melanie, or post a comment telling how her story affected you. I will then gather the comments and pm's to post a sequel Triumph Over Tragedy. Please respond, because although her stay here was all to brief, like a candle in the wind, her life ended all too soon.

My apologies in advance for posting this here, but it was too good to pass up. I usually only send to a select few but.....
It's all how you look at it!

For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on.
At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated,
'If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.'

I wanted to write a note of thanks to everyone here, whether writers, or readers, or kind and patient administrators and other lovely sisters (and brothers, too.) I go back to NYC on the 28th for more testing. My tremors have only abated somewhat, but my doctor assures me that much of it can be addressed with an adjustment in medication. That's the "bad" news. The GOOD news is that you have become such good friends and family to me over the past few months.

I thought someone might be interested in this article about a non-human intersexed athlete:

I wonder if most species of mammals have about the same incidence of intersex conditions?

Having internet connection problems

I can't access the internet via my broadband connection and am waiting for the techies to contact me in the next day or so. My posting of stuff may thus be delayed as I'm using my dongle and netbook computer. This is slow and it loses the signal when it feels like it, losing me whatever I was doing.

The good news is that we have found a house to rent.

I looked at a bungalow last week and it was right on the main Shaftesbury to Salisbury road and was painted magnolia - which looked grubby before we'd even started. The outhouses turned out to be worse than useless and she wouldn't let us put in a cat flap for Sammo.
