For the first time in 15 years, David Dimbleby, presenter of Question Time, has had to miss recording an episode.

Here's the slightly unsual reason why: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8356943.stm

Then again, the programme itself once featured an unusual guest: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/8131264.stm

And on hearing the story, I couldn't help but think of the ultimate (fictional - I hope!) sick note (which also serves as a "Don't try this at home!" physics demonstration): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWeXpNyqOrU

Dimbleby was the anchor on BBC's coverage of the presidential election. The evening was electric (and it was the most television that I had watched at one sitting for over 30 years).

But Dimbleby was in chocolate teapot country: missed his cues, couldn't keep up with who was who (even mixing up those in the studio several times), made mistakes with the results... "Rubbish" is a generous judgment.

Not that I like Humphrys any better. It is a triumph of hope over experience that I tune into the Today programme (no, not Jay Leno; this is radio) each morning, then turn it off again a minute or so later when I realise that he is on.

Evan Davis now... that man is good.

Oh, and me faither kent his faither. DD was a snot
