Killing off characters

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

Author:

Killing Billie off in Bike is the hardest thing I've had to do and it's left me feeling like I've had a real bereavement, I've been flat and depressed since - so why did I do it?

At times I've allowed the fantasy stuff take us away from the realities of life. Cathy's had to deal with all sorts of low-lifes and some quite absurd incidents too. At times the story has been humorous, verging on comedic; at others it's been more like a thriller and just to let you get your breath back I slip in a couple of domestic bliss storylines.

Alone: The Series!

I swore I would never write a serial. After posting my first novel in parts just as soon as I finished them, I decided that method just didn't work for me. If I wanted to go back and changed something due to the way the story was currently developing, whoops sorry! So what am I doing? Writing Alone. Honestly I never intended on there being any additional chapters, but a few of the comments got me thinking. My muse whispered seductive clues in my ear and the next I know there's an 'Alone2' and an 'Alone3' I might add.

My Transsexual Summer

New series. Seven transgender men and women convene at a summer retreat, where they share a mutual understanding of what it is like to be a transsexual in Britain today. In various stages of gender reassignment, members of the group share experiences and provide an insight into the problems and prejudices they face in everyday life, and build the support network they need to reach their long-term goals

You ever get the impression that you are in a place for a higher purpose? Well, in my case, it was more than an impression, it was like getting a smack on the head. See, while I was in Slave Lake, one of the girls I was working with told me her son just came out to her as trans, and she had been doing research into it, when along comes me, doing my RLT. I talked with her awhile, and then gave her my e-mail addy so she can get a hold of me if she needs to. The rest of my time there was okay, but that little moment was just ... special.

I am lucky, as most of my stories have a good number of comments and kudos.

However, some very good stories by brilliant authors don’t get many of either and that’s a shame. I am sure that some writers are put off by the apparent lack of response when just a few more comments or kudos might give them the encouragement to continue.

The reasons are probably many, a few of which are the very success of the site, the sheer number of stories to read and the lack of time to read everything.

Yesterday I reread an old story of Lorrain B.
It's the alien within.

The protagonist wakes up in a female body and a male person stalks the new her and is pissed about the protagonist stealing his life/baby. He goes completly bonkers and breaks in and tries to rape the protagonist and to kill the child.
Apparently he's gone completly nuts over a memory wipe/alteration.

Now, I was in my wig, my wal-mart clothes, and was carrying a purse, so "sir" just wasn't the pronoun I would have preferred him to use. But while not that long ago an incident like that would have sent me spiraling downwards, I immediately thought "poor kid, needs better glasses, cant tell sirs from ma'ams." I think its a good sign, dont you guys?

Where are the disabled characters in TG fiction?

I'm still fairly new to this site, so I should probably start with a bit of an introduction.

As my screen name (Ragtime Rachel) indicates, I'm a ragtime enthusiast. I'm quite enamored as well of the music of the Roaring Twenties and swing eras, and have dabbled a bit in composing ragtime on the computer. (I just wish I could play the piano worth a darn....)

I'm also a male-to-female pre-op transsexual who, incidentally, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair.

It has always amazed me that I have never seen a protagonist in transgender fiction who is like me--a wheelchair user with a neurological disorder.

I just wanted to thank all my readers for their response to my latest effort, St. George and the Dragon. I was concerned that the reception might be considerably less positive than it was. Those of you who have been reading it know that the theme is not tightly tied to the TG experience; however, many of the trials one of the characters goes through are directly due to the homophobic beliefs of the people in the circle where she lives.

Well, I was thinking about "girl lessons", and I want to go into some detail on the subject. See, because of what happened to me, I not only fought against my need to be feminine like my life depended on it, whenever I did give in and let Dorothy out, I struggled with feeling like I could never really be a girl anyway - never look like one, never really act like one. Compliments like the one I got yesterday are helping me move past those anxieties, but very, very slowly, and it still comes up on occasion. So keep cheering Team Dorothy, its really making a difference....

Interesting comment at work

Well, I had an interesting comment at work from Aurelia. She said "I can't even picture you as a tomboy". Gee, wasn't it just the other day I commented on Steph's "Too little, too late" that I needed girl lessons? Maybe I dont after all....

Transfigured rewrite & description images

Okay, well the 'fix' for Transfigured is moving along fine. The parallel stories idea just didn't seem to pan out as my muse was very uncooperative when I attempted to take this route. So, what form will the rewrite take? Aryanna will be the narrator of the entire story. She will tell Flint and Derek's stories. Thus far I've rewritten about a third of the story, but what I have rewritten may see some rather drastic changes so I would be surprised if the rewrite will be finished anytime soon.

I just wanted to say a GREAT BIG Thank You to all of you who have written to me offering support and kindness these past few days.
I had to put my beloved Mother in a nursing home this past Wednesday and it almost crushed me! She has lived in lower floor of my house for twenty years and I have taken care of her these last years because she was suffering from Dementia. A horrible disease that affects the mind to a great degree. There is no cure and and the prognosis is bleak for those afflicted with it.

Well, the last couple of days, I've been arguing with my muse, and its been going like this:

Me: Time to get working on "Quest"

Her: I'm bored of that story. I wanna do something else.

Me: Like what?

Her: Like a sequel to "The Dead Kid,"

Me: Hmmm. Okay, lets see what that looks like ...

(Later)

Me: I dont know, it might be too close to the first one.

Her: Not a problem. We could do another autobiographical story.

Me: I do like talking about myself...

(Later)

Story help

I'm currently writing a story consisting of a mash-up of several fairy tales, with the obligatory TG twist. Courtesy of death threats made shortly after birth, the protagonist (currently about 6 years old) is prohibited from leaving the (small) castle where (s)he lives. However, at some point before the teenage years start, she will need to leave the castle so various assassination attempts (all of which will, of course, be unsuccessful) can take place.
