Brother’s Keeper
A Short Story

I adored my brother Jason, and I wanted nothing more than to hang around with him. But I knew that I was an embarrassment. I was less than two years younger than him, but I was half his size. He was born to be big, and I was born to be small. He was born to be strong – a natural athlete, and I was born to be … not that. He liked to hang around with his pals – the jocks – Kevin, Brad and Hans. They were guys like him. Guys to be admired by guys like I was.

“Ex- excuse me?” The young woman asks, her facemask muffling her soft Yorkshire accent. “Can — can we get a selfie with you, please?” I allow myself a small chuckle as I turn to face the asker of the question — a girl barely older than sixteen, standing with three others of her age. All of them are wearing t-shirts with cartoon caricatures on the front and, even though I can’t see them, angel wing prints on the back, just like all t-shirts promoting the group I tried — and failed — to join.

Bailey Boone is a young engineer in need of a total life reset. So what better way to reset than by accepting a job across the country in glitzy Las Vegas! Even better, he’s got a couple months of free time before settling into work. The only problem? He doesn’t know a soul.

Perhaps, with all this free time, Bailey might be interested in sitting in as a human mannequin to help Caroline practice. It'll be something to do, and Caroline's a lot of fun to be around. Plus, who knows? Maybe he’d even make a cute girl…

The small studio held all the expected trappings: a desk with a high-end laptop, a small kitchen area, tasteful decor that spoke of someone who'd read too many minimalist lifestyle blogs. Everything perfectly normal, perfectly planned.

Chapter 18

As they were getting things set up, Gina and Maisie arrived, followed, a few minutes later, by the G-Force, who had been driven there by Jim’s father. They had their guitars, and the drummer had brought his own cymbals. G-Force set up and Jim reset one of the Yamahas to suit his style. Willow was interested in hearing how much the band had moved on.

My earliest memory is discovering I was in an egg, and having to fight my way out of it. My giant mother breast-fed me. My father was larger than me, but only by the degree I would expect, or even less than that. He had a normal-sized house inside the huge house where my mother lived.

CHAPTER 86
Life went on, though, as it almost always did. Ish went to school, where he switched his sports to rugby and swimming, Maz and I started the ‘matrix’ training, and the ‘protection’ stayed in the bedside cabinet’s drawer.

The letters became more frequent, eventually becoming bulkier as her mother started sending her own photos down, all of older members of her family, according to Maz.
