The three sat quietly as he settled and nodded. The sound man counted down from five and the reporter smiled.

I was back with Janey, my social worker and salvation in this screwed up life of mine. I found myself in foster care when I was only three, Mom deciding she wanted nothing to do with me and Dad deciding that a life with his sister was much preferred to him dealing with me.

Jackie, his sister, tried her best to help raise me, but she was struggling to keep employed and keep a roof over her head. Somehow she managed to keep us above water, although when I got old enough to push a lawn mower around I did a few of the neighbor’s yards to add a few dollars to the pot each week.

Agreement to our proposals was surprisingly quick, given the allegations about ‘Wily Orientals’ I had grown up with, and within two weeks we were already at the stage of drafting a training roster, splitting Maz and I so that we could work twice as fast while still leaving time for our childcare responsibilities.

The first lot were the ‘matrix’ people, including Audrey, who turned up in one of my classes. They were all frighteningly intense in their approach to the work, and I began to suspect that the local working culture might be just a little competitive, maybe with a touch of canine cannibalism.

Chapter One: The Surprise

Thursday, November 4, 2004

My girlfriend, Megan, was in her mid-forties, with shoulder-length brown hair, and very beautiful even on a bad day. We had worked at the same data center for about four years before I changed jobs and got a divorce. Megan and I have been together for about 2 years. She was well known for her tendency to display generous amounts of cleavage.

I realized I wasn’t in a womb; I was in an egg. They said anything was possible when you ethertraveled, and that was one of those possibilities; many ethertravelers had reported being born from eggs.

I tried to bust my way out of the egg, but failed at first. I slept again later, and the next time I awoke I was feeling hungry. The yolk sac was empty. Now I really needed to hatch, to break my way out of the egg. I couldn’t tell whether I had arms or wings at this point, but they had elbows. After trying several other strategies, by poking both elbows to opposite sides at the same time, I was able to break a hole in the eggshell. Once it was broken, it was pretty easy to break the rest of it.
