True to his word, Jack called the CO first thing Monday and laid it out for him, that he and I had never had a relationship, that it was always a ruse so I wouldn't be pressured for dates, and Erica backed him up the whole way! Later that year Charlie heard some worrying news from Peter. One of Britain’s mining ships spotted a potential “Planet Killer” asteroid on the way back to earth. The Woden, contacted earth and ask the Boudicca to confirm their findings on their way back to the asteroid belt.

“I’ve sent you the data Charlie. It does look like it’s on course to hit earth. The thing is nearly 70 miles’ diameter. It will kill all life if it hits.”

I was 28. I was between jobs. I was homeless. The breaks with my parents were final. My girlfriend had just dumped me. My best friend from high school had only barely failed to kill me. I needed a break!

Rita looked towards the stack of DVDs as the film ended, and it was clear that she wanted to watch the next one, but the clock was most definitely against her. Pablo spoke softly to her, and she simply nodded, before rising and coming round to face us both. A hug and a kiss for her father, the same for me, and she was off to bed, while I was still settled against him, afraid of breaking the spell. As the hall door closed, he almost whispered my name.

Six months later. David Rodgers was living with Charlie and his family. He was a big hit with the children, who were now old enough to play football on the beach.

55 - Debriefings

The death of my Father was although not unexpected was a bolt from the blue. I hadn’t even spoken to him for nearly a decade so it cannot be said that we were close. Ever since we had gone our separate ways, I only ever thought of him when I passed through my old home town of Corby.

Nyx watches as Tammy and Leland ate. She couldn’t believe how much food Leland was able to pack away all by himself. Tammy, on the other hand, managed to eat twice the amount she ate, easily.

“Where do you put all this food?” Nyx looks at Leland as he ate the last eggroll.

Leland looks towards Nyx “same place you do.” A smile appears on his face.

“Right. So, what exactly do the two of you do and how did you manage to damage that stolen suit?”

He sat down on the sofa, waving an arm for me to join him, but keeping a judicious distance between us.

“Please, Caroline. A little talk, I think”

As I sat, I watched him turn his gaze away, towards my stack of DVDs.

“So much. Such short time. My head, it is spinning, I think is the English wording. What is your thought about Rita?”

“She is wonderful, Pablo. You should be proud of her”

He sighed.
