When I was in college, I struggled with my identity...I thought that the songs which I borrowed for this piece below were written just for me...I feared what it would be like if I ever came out to my family...I never did...and I wept |
Prayed there was a way to feel at home
Sleep pretty dear try not to cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Troubled slumbers fill your eyes
Tears awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty girl try not to cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Boy, you're going to carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Boy, you're going to carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
They never give me acceptance
They just invite me with limitations
And in the middle of their expectations
I break down
Girl, you're going to carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Girl, you're going to carry that weight
Carry that weight a long time
Oh yeah, all right
Will this be all there is?
Tonight
Maybe someday
The hope you live
Will be the hope you give
You never give me acceptance
You only give me your ultimatums
and in the middle of communication
I break down
I never give you my number
Cause if I did you'd just reject me
So what's the point, you'd just hang up and
I'd break down
On my own so who would care
See no future, it's not fair
Family doesn't care, nowhere to go
Thought about it, where to turn?
Christmas morning, might return
Maybe there's a welcome for me now?
But oh, that sad rejection, nowhere to go
Oh, that tragic feeling
Nowhere to go
Nowhere to go
One sad dream
Pick up my life and move so far away
Soon we'll be gone from here
Walk down the road and wipe those tears away
One sad dream came true... today
Came true... today
Came true... today...yes it did
A 2, then 4, then 6, then 8
When did it turn from love to hate?
She came back home while in transition
She prayed they all would understand
She failed to pass all their inspections
Couldn't meet all of their demands
Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody see?
The family had no intention
of greeting who she'd come to be
She said she'd always been a female
She said it went back all the way
And though she thought they would accept her
It would not be that Christmas Day
And so she quit trying to appease them
She had her fill of all the strife
She knew she'd never ever please them
So she cried and got on with life
Didn't anybody tell her?
Didn't anybody say?
The family had no intention
of loving her on Christmas day!
And in the end
The hope you live
Will be the hope you give

Sad song
Another beautiful but also sad song.It must be a horror to be rejected by family on christmas day when family should be whole and forgot about all their differences.
Please, Please Me
You not only got their meter spot on, but you captured the raw emotion of their adolescent anger. I'm afraid to read it backward.

Hey Jules don't feel so bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her show your great heart
And we'll all help to make it better
Hey Jules don't be afraid
You were made to go out and be her
The moment you notic'd her within
Let us begin to make it better
And any time you feel the pain, Hey Jules, refrain
Don't carry it all upon your shoulders
How well we know how bad it hurts to "keep it cool"
But you don't need to feel any colder
Na na na na na
na na na na
Hey Jules don't look so down
You have found her now go and get her
Remember don't keep her just in your heart
Then we can start to make it better
So let her out and let her in
Hey Jules you'll shine
You're waiting for your chance to just begin
You want to show this other you
Hey Jules you'll do
The best friends you need are right by your side
Na na na na na
na na na na Yeah
Hey Jules don't feel so bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her outta your skin
And we'll all help to make it better
Better, better, better, better, better, Yeah,Yeah,Yeah

Abbey's Road Home
A sad commentary on the trevails of a trans woman in her battle for her self worth. Once she accepts bitter reality, she will find a new family to replace those who reject her.

Aren't you jumping the gun? Family is sacred.
The Beatles had another song that said it all "We Can Work It Out."

I agree! Even the Disfunctional DiMaggios
...were sacred...Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend...As the last few verses explain, And in the end the hope you live will be the hope you give. Like the prodigal...it's never too late to be reconciled. Even if things seem unfair. I would have never reconciled with my father before his passing if I had insisted he change first. To come out to my mother when she was literally on death's door took a lot of courage I know I didn't have on my own...but what if I'd never made the effort...taken that risk...from my perspective, it's never too late, and for that, I have hope, and in turn I pray that I've given you hope as well.

The Beatles had another great song!
'We all live in a Yellow Submarine!'
We can sink or swim.
I prefer if we all swim, don't you?

Curiously...
...even before some of the Beatles tunes went through my head, I noted you name appear in the commentary section, and all I could think of was Lovely Rita, Meter Maid...I swim like a cat in water, but it is much more preferable to the altertive! Thanks.

As a Beatles fanatic, I have to say that I'm impressed.
I couldn't help but sing aloud and feel my way through new avenues of angst and despair in a beloved and familiar vehicle. I know I'll be coming back to read (no, SING!) this again and again for the emotional energy that resonates so clearly in my chest.
Thank you for this, Drea.
@Stanman - I have to agree that sometimes a family is so ingrained with venomous, dysfunctional thinking that finding new family members to adopt, such as those of your significant other or friends, is healthier. Breaking the cycle sometimes means leaving the bog.
