David stared at the sneakers in the box, the deep purple color gleaming under the light. “Great,” he muttered, lifting one up for a closer look. “These will match my scales.”
“Your what?” both his mom and Kelly said in unison, their voices sharp with confusion.
David froze, his mind racing. Crap, why did I say that out loud?
“My dragon… oh, umm… these are really pretty.” He trailed off, trying to backtrack, but his mom wasn’t having it. Her expression hardened, and she crossed her arms.
The High Priest, infuriated by Akari’s growing influence and the success of her divine artifact, realized that subtlety was no longer an option. His previous attempts to undermine her had failed, and worse, they had only solidified her resolve and earned her more support from the academy. It was time to escalate his efforts and strike directly.
A second team-building Friday in February means another couple's costume
for William and Kateri, but a mistake creates a very complicated situation for William.
“Idiot”, “Dumbass”, “Piece of Shit”, “Pathetic Loser” were the phrases going through Devin’s mind. He was going to go out with his girlfriend while looking like this. People would gender him female and she’d instantly know what was going on.
Before the end of the month, Grace had her driver's license and the two spent their first evening out alone without Judy. It was a simple dinner at a fast food place and then a movie, but she and Josh enjoyed it just the same.
Elise was making her way to the front door of Devin’s house. Her parents knew she was going to his house, but they didn’t know his parents weren’t there. She didn’t tell them that part, since they probably wouldn’t have let her go otherwise.
As she approached his house, she knew that she would need to keep a close eye on Devin. She may not have been the most observant person in the world, but she wasn’t blind. Something was clearly happening to him.
Dean Street and Grand Ave:
Carla had followed the guy named Fredrick Cazalet to a restaurant in lower Manhattan. She knew from her contacts on the street, that in the back of the restaurant a bunch of guys got together to play poker. He was also the guy she punched the day she rescued Autumn.
As she is sitting in her car watching the place. She thought she spotted some movement in the back alleyway. She grabs her expanding pike bo-staff and exists from her car. She moves quickly across the street and heads towards the alleyway.
So here I was, a twenty-three year old mother with a great job, a loving family and a very good bank balance. It couldn’t get much better than that.
Actually, in one respect it did. It was my time with little James that was transforming me as I wondered at the life I had created (with a little help from Jerry).
I found myself in the nursery / music room often, gently playing my much loved Sammy guitar and singing to my son.
After unpacking they ate and slept and were free of jetlag the next morning.
"Let's do some sparring on the beach after breakfast," Fred said. She was sitting at the kitchen table in just a robe.
"Sure," Sally said. "I brought my gi." Sally was dressed in blue cargo shorts under a white tank top.
"Then maybe I can practice my blasts without losing clothes because I'll be starting with none," Brita said. She was also in just a robe but hadn't bothered to tie it shut unlike Fred.
Black Angel Protections, Interrogation Room, California Office
Jason and Andy look at the two guards that had revealed where the black site was and had helped in the escape of Adam Ludlum and Greg Hallaway. They watch as the water fills up the glass boxes that they borrowed from their cousin Sasha. She used it in one of her escape acts and to get a confession from some men who had attacked her.
“So, who do you think will talk first?” Jason watches as the water flowed into the glass box.
Mantra (Malibu Comics) now has to face her own super-magician son in battle, aided by three mighty and experienced ultras. It's going to be bad. But is Mantra prepared to face the worst if it happens?
Judy spent the next month looking into any legal options for Josh. In the end all that came of it was that he could file a malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Williams, but not until after he turned eighteen. Until then only his parents could file one on his behalf.
Like many small towns in the southern United States, Benton's principal commercial district was Main Street. Here along this bricked paved section of street, one would find the backbone and lifeblood of the community, its numerous small businesses all locally owned and operated. Some were well over one hundred years old. Two famous examples were Potter's Mercantile, a general store that had been owned by generations of Potters, the family I came from. And Brewer's Hardware Both had been founded the same time as Hannah's Landing, that was before Hannah's Landing had grown into Benton.
On the way back to the hotel I pulled him into a jeweller where we chose an engagement ring. It wasn’t flashy but I could see the worried look on his face at the price.
I chuckled, “I’ll get it today and get the boss to take it out of your wages during the summer.”
That done he put it on my finger and I kissed him before paying the account and we went back to the hotel.
When she came back she saw Fred rubbing lotion into Brita's back and rolled her eyes, "It's done you pervs. You'll be getting a new MID and a passport and other id in your new name. They'll be coming by special courier on Monday morning. We'll shop that afternoon then we can plan the vacation." She chuckled, "Maybe we should find an island resort with clothing optional or private beaches."
Doctor Gillies steepled his fingers. It was not a gesture he did often – not anymore. He had done his stint in general surgery, but now that he had found his niche he understood that he needed to be more empathetic. He was, in the main. But now was the time for plain talking. This patient, Alex, needed to be told.
CHAPTER 31
My head felt a little off-kilter when I woke up, Alys still snoring away beside me. It was raining outside, of course. I sat up in my bag just as Dad put his head round the dormitory’s door, making the universal gesture that meant ‘Want a cuppa?’, and I nodded in reply, a little gingerly. That would be a hangover, then…
Trapped in a one-car garage filling with smoke, Josh found it strange that he could breath just fine. It was then that he saw both Jennifer and Grace were there and choking on the deadly fumes as he watched helplessly. Suddenly, he noticed he had a respirator in his hand and looked at the two girls in turn. He knew that he could only save one of them at this point, as they were both so close to death that by the time he'd saved one, the other would be gone. Frozen in indecision, he stood there and watched as both succumbed to the smoke and fell lifeless to the floor as he screamed.
Monday morning while Brita and Sally got driven to the DPA offices to get tested Fred ran by himself again and practiced his new running spell.. He was planning to surprise the other two with it some time.
Fred saw them at lunch, "Hello ladies. How did it go?"
"It went well," Brita said. "Sally was great at moral support. I am an avatar 1, induced Exemplar 3, and an Energizer 4a at least for now."
"She can produce both light and heat in great amounts but with little control as yet," Sally said.
A school for superpowered children seemed like a good idea and definitely a change from fighting mad geniuses and superhuman brutes. But who knew that helping set up a school for super-powered teenagers would be so challenging? Not to mention dangerous and exciting...
