I looked past the bright headlights and it was my boss Kate Harper. She quickly beckoned me to get inside the car and then wound her window down to give the guys a piece of her mind as she drove off.

I was so relieved and yet I felt a cold shudder down my spine. ‘Put on your seatbelt. I thought it was you as I pulled out of the railway station’ she said. ‘What happened. Where are the others? What were you doing alone?’

The beer was finished, our path home was trod, and Eric left me to get changed for bed in the tent as he wandered off to do his teeth. I settled down with Tabby and waited for him to slide in beside me, and he did, bringing a waft of cold knees and minty breath and a cuddle.

For three days,

I was myself

Accepted

“Just one of the girls”

I was called by my real name

I held down a job

I was whole,

At last

Then the door closed

And now

I am back to where I was

having to hide

and pretend I am a man.

With no choice

but to stagger along

Chapter 24

Morning came for once in what felt like in a long time. Oh God you know, other than when I was on my own curled up in depression. I’ve never done this before. I’ve never slept in before. James was always in training or going someplace and after that. I wasn’t really allowed to when I was in the group home and getting off from the strip-club where I waitressed at 4 in the morning and sleeping in didn’t count.

Chapter 22 Another Fun Night

‘Please call me if you can — I need to talk to you’.

I had to go downstairs to the bathroom and there were 2 girls chatting as I went inside. I was a little hesitant at first but since I was a bit uncomfortable I decided I had no choice. It was impossible to go into a mens bathroom these days dressed as I was and luckily so far I didn’t have any adverse reaction but I’d still had a few quizzical looks.
