Happy Australia Day

Happy Australia Day, a celebration commemorating the day in 1788 when, after losing their traditional dumping grounds due to the recent unpleasantness in the former American colonies, the English, known affectionately by later day Australians as Pommies, landed several boat loads of convicts on the shores of New South Wales.

Well done lads, well done.

HW Coyle
a.k.a. Nancy Cole

P.S. I wonder how Bree from While the Band Played Waltzing Matilda is celebrating the day? Safe to say she probably isn't serving sushi.

I Don't Think I Will Ever Fly Into Birmingham

We fly to Europe fairly frequently; however I think I will continue to take the train to Birmingham. That's not a runway, that's a rollercoaster.

Away for a bit

So my little side-story came out before I anticipated it would, but there you go. I have this character defect where I find it difficult to sit on a story. I even managed to write another chapter of SEE.

Unfortunately, there won't be another one for a while... I'm off to that place again, you know the one, where men are men and the women seem to be mostly men as well...

So for all you 'cookies' out there:

Holding on to hope in the middle of grief

When I was in high school, we were assigned a project that involved creating a coat of arms that would represent us. Mine ended up having a sun ray of hope, a cross of faith, an open book of knowledge, and a broken heart held together by a band-aid.

Looking back on it now, I think that it shows that even though I saw myself as "broken", I continued to have hope that some kind of healing was possible for me.

I've told you that story so I can tell you this one:

TSA ARE Prevs.

As a few of you know I was in a life changing accident around the beginning of the year that cost me my left leg. Over the past few months I have had my ups and downs with my recovery. As a freelance Network Designer by trade I do a lot of traveling, but until just recently I have not had to fly anywhere. Most of the time I just drive or if needed the Amtrak. (For our overseas readers that is the train.)

The goodbye from Heck

So, as I mentioned in a previous blog, the other half has gone to the US to help out with son+new wife+twins. To get to Heathrow (LHR) involves a local train ride, then a bus link to the airport. The flight's at 1600: we have plenty of time to make it. What can possibly go wrong?

Real Life changes gear

So here we are, in the hottest part of the UK year, and I'm unable to do things most of the day because of the heat. That doesn't seem to phaze Real Life, of course, which just keeps piling it on.

Short result: Somewhere Else Entirely may be delayed for the next two months or so. See below for details.

Chip and Pin vs, Magnetic strip

We are leaving Saturday for London, and I just realized that all our credit/debit cards use the magnetic strip. We do not have the Chip and Pin technology available yet in our backward country. Will they still work at the ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) and at retail outlets in England, Scotland, and Ireland (both parts)? I going to hate having to carry a lot of cash.

Thank you Veterans & Merchant Mariners Memorial Day 2014.

This is Memorial Day weekend, 2014 and I think it behooves us all, no matter what nationality, race, creed or religion to take a moment and thank all those who have served and who are serving in the armed forces of their countries. Without their sacrifices, without them doing the job they either volunteered or were drafted into doing, we wouldn't have the freedoms and privileges we have now. Some returned from far off battlefields and some didn't, but we all owe every one of them our thanks, our gratitude. Let's also not forget the Merchant Mariners.

I Hate Mother's Day

I'm truly happy to see so many celebrating Mother's day. Mothers go through a lot bringing a new life into the world, nurturing that child, then sending them out to stand on their own two feet. Bravo

BUT

I would much prefer it to be "Mommy's Day." Any genetic female with all her pieces parts working correctly can become a mother. It takes someone special to be a Mommy.

WHY do I hate it? It is widely acknowledged that my soon-to-be-ex wife never was, never will be a Mommy. She freely admits this.

Its possibly come to some of your attention that a certain big sporting event is starting in Yorkshire this coming July. A couple of BC authors are event volunteers and I know a few more are cycling 'fans', it has therefore been suggested that we have a mini Gabycon over the weekend.

Question is, are any of you up for it? we are most likely looking at getting together after the stages for food, chatting and possibly having some TdF themed Gaby readings. Location will most likely be South Yorkshire-ish.

Let me know what you think, if you are interested or want to know more.

The Orange

Once there was a Seder headed by a female Rebbe. On the Seder plate was a crust of bread. A disciple asked, "Why...?" She told the story of Puah, a girl from a family of women, asking her Rebbe "Is there room in Judaism for a lesbian?" He said, "There is as much room for lesbianism as there is a crust of bread on the Seder plate." That is why this Rebbe had a crust on the Seder plate. -- based on the Oberlin College Haggadah.

Ma just called. It's past noon back home, but I guess she doesn't realize it's about 1:30 in the morning here. Sassafrassa...

She called to say we should postpone our delayed visit yet again as Winter Storm Ion is gonna be bringing extremely cold (dangerously cold, in fact) arctic air to most of the U.S. Northwest for the coming week.

Ma says the East Coast will not be too affected yet but it's best to stay put here in Manila.

I feel a bit chagrined. Moe and I postponed our trips home for the holidays (Kyoto and DC) on worry about the weather.

Lots of places in the States DID have really bad weather last week, so we thought that our decision was a good one, but Ma said that it was warm enough in DC the day before Christmas that Dad called it shirt-sleeves weather, and flights to and out of Raegan/National, Baltimore and Dulles weren't in danger of being canceled anytime soon..

Well, color me chagrined.

So today I spent the day with my 7Y/O cousin. She was a blast to be around. We started the day by making cookies and burning them, she thought that was hilarious, I felt really bad. She then treated me like a life size barbie doll and this is what resulted,

I've been trying to think of a way to say it, in a unique and

despite the fact that I've been wracking my brain

for a while now.

So I guess I'll just stick to something traditional:

Well, it's just a few days away now, and while I have been in and out of here a bit I haven't posted a story in a while. So I will just use this blog to wish you one and all the very best wishes for the season. May whatever higher power you believe in keep you health, happy and whole. It's been a busy year for me and I hope to slow down a little next year so I can write more. My count is probably off, but I am pretty sure we lost two of our own this year so remember those families as well. Keep your nose clean even if it takes both shirt sleeves,(lol)

Whatever the future may hold

Some time back I was outed by one of my nephews, a particularly nasty and unthinking individual whose actions have unfortunately caused me multiple issues, not to mention the total polarization of my ex-wife's family. My ex-wife was the only person outside of my therapist and my friends here who actually new that I was transitioning - my plan being to address this with my sons in the spring of 2014. My three sons, who at the time my nephew decided to tell the world were aged 17, 22, and 25, unfortunately found out in a less than optimal fashion.

First of all, I want to say Happy Thanksgiving to all the American members of Big Closet. I hope all of you are having a great day with friends and family. For everyone else in other countries, I hope you're having a great Thursday.

I'm about to have a giant feel sorry for myself moment. So, if you don't want to read that, you've been warned.

Another holiday, and another one spent alone. I was supposed to have a house full of friends today. All of them canceled for one reason or another.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends, fans and online family

At this time of year, we take time out to thank whatever God we may or may not follow, whatever person or thing that makes our lives just a bit better and hopefully easier. Remember who or what you are thankful for and bear in mind. However bad you might think you have it, there are many who have it much worse.

Thank you all for everything you have all offered me in the past and present. God bless you all, every one.

Holiday hugs and love,
Catherine Linda Michel
