Real Life changes gear

Blog About:

So here we are, in the hottest part of the UK year, and I'm unable to do things most of the day because of the heat. That doesn't seem to phaze Real Life, of course, which just keeps piling it on.

Short result: Somewhere Else Entirely may be delayed for the next two months or so. See below for details.

What's been happening recently to cause all this upheaval? Silly little things, really, but they all mount up.

The first item is the fence which blew down last winter. The guy next door has been nagging me to fix it ever since (yes, I know) and I finally found some reputable chaps to come and replace the whole of it. I'll spare you the technical problems but it was ten panels, five of which were between our houses. The rotten posts were replaced by concrete ones and the new fence looks really good and should last a good long while.

Of course, that meant I needed to have a new side gate, since the post is now concrete and is actually upright, unlike the previous one, so the old gate doesn't fit and can't be adjusted. I've just spent an hour preparing the wood which I cut yesterday. I have a window of perhaps 2-3 hours each day before the sun comes round to the area I work in.

Because of the medications I'm not supposed to go out in direct sunlight because of increased risk of skin cancer. This makes doing anything in the garden 'very interesting' at the moment, and also impacts things like shopping and going anywhere (like the hospital, or airports).

Next factor. Remember that son in New York who got married in February? The twins arrived at the end of April and all seemed well. Until they somehow succumbed to the plague now visiting NY amongst other cities: bedbugs. End result, unexpected move out and fumigators in the apartment, then clean up all the soft furnishings and clothing everyone possesses. Do you know how many clothes and other fabric items two baby girls have? Frightening.

They're back now but are wilting under the strain. My partner is flying over on Monday to help out for two weeks and in three weeks I will be following her over for another two. That means, of course, I'll be chief cook and bottlewasher while she's away and less time to write. While I'm away I can't really write either, I'm going to be feeding one end and cleaning the other of both babies to give Mom a rest. I have no problem handling babies - although I haven't had the practice for a while, I must admit.

We had planned to go over together in September but events have forced us to split our visits to provide extra cover. We still plan to go again, together, but it might be put off until later in the year because of the earlier visits.

SEE: what can I say. There are interesting developments projected and I'll no doubt continue to create dialog in my head whenever I get a spare moment. I may have time issues but nobody thought fit to inform my muse. There's also a 'side project' which seems to be occupying some of my time but I want to write that one out before any of it gets posted.

My projected flying date is 21st August but I'll write another blog before I go, as my partner will be back by then and circumstances may have changed. By the time I fly out I want to have SEE #110 posted, but only time will tell if I have enough time, energy or peace to write anything down.

I really enjoy SEE.

And am greatful for whatever time you can spare. SEE craps all over Game of Thrones.

Penny and SEE and JoB and AO

As should be obvious, Penny and I have been in close contact during the developments of our stories. We have achieved a situation now where the stories have sufficiently diverged that we require less timeline co-ordination. I have now the next three episodes of JoB in or beyond the final editing stage and AO #2 is well on the way.

RL struck me too in recent weeks, having to attend three funerals and deal with car break downs and the like - not to mention the 'guests from hell' who descended upon us for a whole week.

Having said that, I have up to now run each and every episode of JoB past Penny's scrutiny before posting, and I hope that she will have time to look the new ones over before she leaves.

So you all may rest assured that everything has not ground to a full stop.

Cheers

Julia.

Chefs and spatulas

No Chef I know tries to wield 2 spatulas at the same time.
We Texans know about sun exposure. Want a hat to keep it at bay?

Best,

DLJ

Two spatulas?

I think that's the best way when you are stir-frying a big heap of beansprouts, chicken, veg and rice.

Thanks for the hat offer but I'd never get through the door wearing it.

Penny

Hat

We could get you a poke bonnet instead. That’s what grandma wore when we were picking or chopping cotton. It wasn’t elaborate as the illustrations but got the job done. You could even make one yourself. We’d have to have pictures afterwards though!

Best,

DJ

It'd have to be like my

It'd have to be like my grandmother.

Long sleeves, long pants, gloves, and a tilly hat.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Getting things done can be a bitch

As was mentioned, wear a large brim hat and long sleves along with gloves. wear sunscreen on your face. Secondly measure the opening for the gate, build what you want inside your house or garage, place it on blocks and attatch the screws. That way you won't be outside too long, Arecee

It's not enough

The first day the men were in the garden I had to go out and show them what was wanted. I must have been out there no more than 3 minutes but it was enough to burn one foot through my sandal (and nowhere else).

If I were to wear a hat it would have to be the biggest sombrero in the Western Hemisphere to ensure I was covered up. I always use factor 35+ and make sure everything exposed is larded up but it is a pain and the stuff gets everywhere. Fortunately some of my genes permit me a little exposure but I'm being real careful.

As for the gate, fortunately it's at the north-west corner of the building which means that the sun doesn't reach it until after midday. Gate's built, it is tongue and groove and an old joiner told me to paint the hidden surfaces before assembly, that way it all stays tight for years. Now all I have to do is mount it, leaving enough time for packing (her, not me).

Thank you all for your good wishes.

Penny

REAL LIFE

Is what happens while you are planing some thing else. I can really sympathize with the bed bug issue. We had a major infestation that took a lot of time and energy to fight our way through.
In the end it was a Commercial heat treatment Company that saved the day. It worked by using a group of heaters and fans hooked to an outside generator to heat the house up to an insane 145 + F and keep it there for 8 hours. we cruised the town for a day and when we came home no bugs.

Yes the number, amount and weight of clothing two baby, ]preteen girls, younger, older, do you see the pattern,] have is staggering.

The work you have in front of you is impressive and may give you material for when the princes is Queen and having children of her own. We will remain loyal to S E E and welcome you back when R L relents.

Question is this weather you folks are experiencing any thing like normal. I live in the Pacific Northwest near Seattle Washington and we have had some weather pattern shifts our selves?

Weather

The weather the last few years has been weird, in which I mean not particularly regular. We've had cool summers, warm summers, and last year I would have been swimming around the house if it hadn't been halfway up a hill. Winters are no different: cold, not cold at all, rain, heatwaves in February (!) just anything and everything with no rhyme or reason.

This year it just happened to have been somewhat hot when (i) I'm on drugs which means I have to keep away from the sun (ii) there are many jobs I have to do outside and (iii) plenty of traveling to be done.

In my childhood it snowed every winter and got hot and sunny every summer. I'm not going to start an argument over Global Warming or anything but things aren't what they used to be. But then again, I don't have to put up with smallpox, polio or rickets, or spend ten days on a ship coming to the US. Things change, some good, some not so good.

If it makes you feel better,

If it makes you feel better, at least here in Houston the weather has been pretty close to what I remember from the very early 1990's. Rain every few days, hot, humid, etc. It's like the cycle is turning back around again a bit.

Britain gets to enjoy the fruits of the Gulf Stream after it leaves Texas :)

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Weather patterns

Your weather seems to be shifting back to the early 60's when I visited that side of the pond. The winter of 62, we drove tanks across the Rhine without bridging.
