So my little side-story came out before I anticipated it would, but there you go. I have this character defect where I find it difficult to sit on a story. I even managed to write another chapter of SEE.
Unfortunately, there won't be another one for a while... I'm off to that place again, you know the one, where men are men and the women seem to be mostly men as well...
We depart, allegedly, on Thursday 30th for New York and return on 12th November, arriving 13th. We won't be staying with my son but have instead found a budget hotel not too far away - and on the wrong subway line, of course. Unfortunately, we've also just discovered that the New York Marathon is Sunday 2nd, and the route goes past our hotel... joy.
Since they will be at work most of the time we won't visit, instead doing the usual tourist things - and, possibly, some un-touristy things. But we'll visit at week-ends and there will be an occasion or two when we'll have to baby-sit so that they can fulfil certain appointments and such. During our visit there will be two public holidays so we'll be with our grandchildren then as well.
Having put our clocks back last night we get to do it again Thursday during the flight and then again while we're there when the US does it.
Obviously my writing opportunities will be limited. However, I have a tablet and I've acquired a cheap bluetooth keyboard so I'm going to attempt to log in from time to time and check on BC. I might even do some writing but don't count on it. Fortunately SEE #114 shouldn't be difficult to write - but there will be an odd twist or two...
So, there it is. There won't be a post until about the third week of November, providing I recover promptly from the flight back. I have found coming back is much harder than going from the jet lag point of view. So Solly!
Meanwhile, there's plenty of good stories on BC for me to read, to help pass the time.

I appreciate the update on your plans. I hope you have a reasonably good time in New York. I'll agree with you (from my experience) that recovery from the trip to Europe is harder than from Europe to the US.
NYC Marathon
I would suggest getting out on the street as a NYC Marathon spectator. It's a great show. Runners and spectators from all over the world cheering everybody on regardless of ability level or nationality. It's a moving United Nations, and the UK is well represented.

Jet lag from the US
First off, I wish you a safe and rewarding journey.
Secondly, I wish you fun at the Marathon.
Thirdly --- when I was almost commuting transatlanticly, I found, as has been agreed here, that US to England/Europe was always much worse. The way I eventually developed was to do the trip and land on the 'proper' side of the pond in the morning. Then I would find things to do, friends to keep me awake and so on, have a very light lunch, keep awake through the afternoon and then have a solid evening meal with a glass or two of wine, and force myself (even if it meant strolling around the house) to stay awake until 10 in the evening. Only then would I allow myself to crash, although staying up, if at all possible, until midnight was always better. I would then sleep for six hours at least, longer was always better. Then I would do as near as possible a 'normal' Euro-day. Stay awake as late as possible, and then sleep. That killed the jet lag best, I discovered.
Of course, nowadays, I am so old, I get train lag.
