Worst Case Scenario

Author’s note: this one is sort of inspired by the anime “Simoun” but does not take place in that world. There is a reference to suicide at the start, so read with care.

I stood on the highest point of the bridge I could, trying to steel myself for the jump.

From here, I could see most of Cuan City. I could see the dome where our governor ruled, the massive mansions, the beautiful parks, and the bay that the city is named after.

“It was as if he had hit a cobb’s web, and the man must have been dead before he hit the floor. Brock telt me he didn’t mean to kill him, he was going to braek his arm so he couldn’t hurt Lianna any more, but the man movt and taekt the blow at the base of his neck.”

“Right people, listen up,” I said as I addressed my small team of Deputies.

“I don’t have to tell your that it is Halloween Tomorrow. As usual we need to have a visible presence on all roads into town. Record the license plate of every vehicle that comes into town from 3pm until 8pm. Ma will be manning the phones and will call any incidents in over the radio.”

“Why the change in plan Boss?” asked Tom.

“The State Police have seen some suspicious SUV’s in a few places at various locations up and down the Interstate. Typically loitering outside schools. With almost every child in the county out and about tonight… well it is an ideal time to kidnap or worse.”

Dear Diary, March 5 –

I have slept very little over the last few days. My best friend was kidnapped. It’s the League’s fault for not protecting the people around me or being honest. It’s my fault for letting her go alone that day, especially knowing that it’s me Stone is after.

Yesterday, I finally blew up in everyone’s face about it. Not literally. The base and the League’s members still stand, but I don’t know. Can I still call them my friends? My allies?

The person on the other end of the phone didn’t even give me the chance to say hello first.

“Aradia. We need to talk.”

“Uh, hello? Who is this?”

“Hang on.”

The cordless handset suddenly shrieked loudly in my ear. “Gah!”

“Sorry. All phone lines at the Academy are being monitored by the military. We’re now secure.”

“How did you—oh.” Girl voice, check. Tone weirdly older than pitch, check. Able to do hacker stuffs, checkmate. It had to be Erica. But she was obviously sticking to using codenames. “Hi Fields.”

“Audrey!” I called out, down the stairs as I pounded down the steps, clutching a manila envelope. “Audrey where the hell are you?”

“Calm down,” Courtney said as she passed me on the way to the back of the house. “She doesn’t live in the house, she’s probably at her dorm.”

Judy formed a ball of electricity with her hands and dropped it into the hole. She hoped that the tunnel hadn’t already been blocked off. She didn’t care if the entire Arachne Regime was down there. If the tunnel was open, she was going to run after her friend.

The ball illuminated the hole until it touched the bottom and fizzled out. There were rocks and other materials present from what she could see.
