Sammy, you have to text me when you get home from a date!  Rowan’s message was waiting on his phone when Sammy woke up the next morning.

How do you know if it was really a date?  he texted back, bleary-eyed.  I never told you how that shook out.

Ever since graduation from high school, my dream of the good life has seemed to be a lesson in futility. First there was my Mom’s accident, her injuries didn’t take her life, but maybe that would have been better. I loved my Mom but couldn’t stand to be around watching her in a wheelchair, knowing that most likely she would be confined to one for the rest of her life. The idiot driver walked away from the crash, apparently drunk, never admitting fault for the trouble and grief he caused.

Ethan entered the small practice room in Laird Hall, her stomach knotting with a peculiar mix of anxiety and anticipation. The space was modest—just a square mat area surrounded by mirrored walls, with a few practice dummies and basic equipment stored along one side. Designed for individual training rather than classes, it offered the privacy she desperately needed for what was about to happen.

I suppose my story started a few years ago. Let me take you back to the beginning.

Chapter 3: Feedback Loop

The night air was thick with tension as Tim and Joey sat in the Porsche, adrenaline coursing through their veins. Tim gripped the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles white against the leather. The engine purred beneath him; a powerful beast ready to be unleashed. He glanced at Joey, whose wide eyes reflected both excitement and fear.

I earned my living as a consultant, advising people in how to invest their money and hold on to what they had in today’s economy. I purposefully selected only female clients, most males think they know better and do not listen to the advice I offer them. Then, when they lose a chunk, they blame me for steering them wrong. I avoid all of that drama by not taking them as clients in the first place. I have been very fortunate, managing over the years to amass quite a few clients, mostly in the upper echelon of business, across a large spectrum of business types.
