Chapter Seven - Coffee

 

The ride through the paved cavern tunnels was short but bumpy as the transport’s suspension had clearly died a squealing death at least ten to twenty firestorms ago. I’d been locked into position in the middle of a squad again, though this time opposite me wasn’t a cranky diminutive devil blowing smoke but rather a sullen swamp-green demon similarly shackled into place whose inner rage boiled and simmered.

As evident by the constant glares of resentment and brewing rebellion he kept shooting across the aisle whenever he thought I wasn’t paying attention. My sympathy meter didn’t move much in response, I was too busy being happy that they’d given me a bright orange prison jumpsuit.

Hey, it would never have won any fashion shows but it certainly beat being naked.

I took the shoes from her and sat next to her on the bed. There was a box of wet wipes on the bedside cabinet. I took a few and started cleaning off the gore, taking extra care around the sharp edges and points.

I’d about finished when a quiet but distinct tick sounded against the window. I opened it and reflexively caught the two heel sheaths that came flying through the gap.

“Thanks,” I said quietly. He’d already demonstrated how good his hearing was.

Follow the continueing story of an English foreign exchange student Em (Mfanwy), alias a boy named Rhod, that poses as a girl while in Grottoes Virginia in America. She goes to Agusta High School as a girl. Em is also a female cheerleader and taking ballet classes from Ellen to move like a graceful girl while she is in Grottoes; Rachael, the girl that actually is teaching the ballet lessons to Em, seems to think that Em is really a boy in disguise. The host family, the Jones's, do not know Em is not quite a girl, their daughter, Sandy, was told because Sandy was also a former boy. Em knows Sandy is a former boy because she was told by one of the US teachers, but the Jones family didn't realize Em was told and they feel Em should not be told about Sandy. Sandy's homophobic father, John, hates what Sandy has become and denies she is a girl. Mary, the mother, really misses her son and is having a tough time seeing Sandy as a daughter. Mary loves Em as a true daughter and treats her as such, much to Sandy's dismay. Mary is also a counselor at the high school Em is going too. Kevin the five year old spoiled brother, simply adores Aunty Em. A homophobic boy, Dan Martin, is trying to out Em to the whole school. While Dan was in Warsop England, he got kicked off of the exchange program when he lost his cool as he stumbled into his host partner Rhod, while Rhod was dressed as a girl. Dan's mouth got him into lot trouble, but he blames Rhod for everything. Dan wants to get even, so he wants to out Rhod to the whole school, without letting people know that it will be him who did it. Several teachers could lose their jobs, if Em is found out that he really is a boy, because these three teachers help Em carry on the charade. Will Em ever make it back to England without being discovered? Can he get back into England with a male passport, when he looks so good as a girl and really moves like one?

It was June 6, 1944 and to say Private John Burton was unhappy would be an understatement. Even though he had heard General Eisenhower's speech on the radio, he really wanted to be elsewhere. Not that he wasn't a red-blooded American and not that he didn't grasp the importance of the mission. It's just that he was convinced there was a German bullet with his name on it. It was a feeling he just couldn't shake. All the trouble his parents went through to raise him, scolding him into good behavior, getting onto him to make good grades. And then all the money and effort Uncle Sam went through to prepare and train him for this exact moment, everything his life was moving towards would come to a wasted end on a beach in France he'd never heard of. He just knew it. And he was mightily annoyed about it.

Being annoyed couldn't describe how John felt when not even ten feet from the landing craft onto the sands of the beach before being cut down by German machine gun fire. Talk about being angry as he fell onto the sand...

And then even more angry when he woke up in another time and place as a naked teen girl...
