CHAPTER 20
I woke in a warm fuzz, my bag snug around me and my bladder, for once, not that insistent. I slithered out of it nonetheless, and after I had done the necessary, I started a trawl through the food left ready for breakfast by the Woodruffs.
That term finally made sense to me, for Steph was now so clearly right in her skin, content as she was, and if someone who shared a bed with her had no issues, then why should I? I decided I would keep telling myself that until I was convinced.
“Bobby, be reasonable, I haven’t even picked up the clippers, it can’t itch.”
“Mom, I don’t care, can’t we just leave my hair long? It isn’t very long, it barely reaches my collar, there are lots of boys that have hair longer than I do.”
It was a humid summer night when the shadows crept across the skyscrapers of Manhattan, casting long, inky fingers over the city. The next day I got home before anyone else. As usual I dropped my bag in the hall and took my shoes off. By the time Sunday came around the prospective party completely filled my thoughts. Choosing what to wear had been easy enough. Knowing that for part of the time I would be wearing only a swimsuit, for the rest of the afternoon I selected a dress that was neither too short nor too revealing up top. It was a pretty pink number with a lace collar and I thought it suited my purpose just fine. Very demure! I was more anxious about who I might meet and what I would be asked to do.
