The Accidental Soprano
A Short Story
By Maryanne Peters
They said that I was fortunate that the injury did not cause lasting damage, but that was before it changed my life. I am not bitter towards the surgeons that repaired my neck. I have used surgeons since, and I am grateful to them. Surgeons have to do what they do to let us live, or to normal lives.
In this chapter Zee runs into some gender confusion while signing up for Janegirl Camp, then gets answers to a few questions during the camp orientation meeting.

Jeff stood on the windswept headland and thought of home. In just a few days he would be on his way there. Behind him he could hear the noise of the penguin colony, now well into the egg-laying season. There was a tug on his line and he pulled in a good size fish which he thought would be very nice for the evening meal. He was sure that Jane would do it justice.
This is one of my rare sequels. Quite obviously it’s a sequel to Mousy Trap, well, sort of.
However, it can read as a stand-alone story.
I’m Jane. I don’t fit in. I’m a girl despite what I look like. I’m weird. I’m a tomboy, a terrible one. I’m an outsider.
And that was already before we moved and I had to change schools before my sophomore year in high school.
That’s how I presented myself the first day in the new high school

Sylvia sat in a hardback folding chair with her face towards the bright sun, enjoying the warm spring afternoon. She was generally at peace with the world as she had just enjoyed a delightful lunch and had had the opportunity to renew her friendship with an old and dear friend. She was feeling mellow, aided by three glasses of a gold medal-winning California Chardonnay.
CHAPTER 5
I didn’t sleep well, unsurprisingly, and was up well before either Mam or Dad. Mam was down a little while later, and as we worked through cereal and toast, Dad arrived. While Mam left the subject of the previous night’s confessional strictly alone, Dad’s occasional glance my way left no doubt in my mind that they had discussed me in their own bed. He said nothing about it, though, but the force of his hug as he left the house was as plain an answer as I could ask for.
CHAPTER 4
It was one of two funny days we had in our pattern of lessons, where two hours of the afternoon were allocated to ‘special’ projects’, alternating week by week. The previous week had been set aside for the school orchestra, so I had spent it partly in trying to get a tune out of a harp, and partly trying to get the harp into tune. That afternoon’s ‘special’ was my alternate one, climbing. How could anyone live surrounded by rock, and not feel even the slightest of urges to try their hand on steeper ground?
Caution: There is physical and emotional abuse in this chapter beyond force dressing.

Walking into the kitchen made the already dejected Rick Shell feel even worse. Nothing today was going his way. He spent the entire morning doing his chores before going over to his girlfriend's place. The most time consuming one was him doing a detailed cleaning of the kitchen. Now instead of being able to get an A rating from the Allenghy’s Board of Health, the room would cause any restaurant to be closed immediately.
As the term progressed so did all the groups’ confidence. Everyone was helping each other and the teachers were really enjoying being part of a session that they had trained for. The four boys were becoming able to talk to, and with, the girls in the study group and they all grew up more as time went on.
The
short voyage from Tobeligo to Yod takes longer than expected and it
is early evening before they are found a berth. In the women's hostel

confrontation occurs with someone who should know better!
Tracy could feel the acceptance from her dad and she relaxed, Helen on the other hand was showing signs of worry. As earlier she was typical of a woman of her social status and back ground. Then as she saw the support her husband had for their child, she started to realise in herself that if she went to that way of thinking then she would harm her child. That realisation rocked her to the core again, it made her feel small for the second time that day.
“What will Richard think of me!” Tracy wailed ….........

This is the longest story I have written so far. There is some dark stuff involving forced sex change and prostitution in the Matron's back story.
Thanks to Annabel for editing.
The old wind-up alarm clock woke the girls at an unfamiliar 7am. Dani arose first and made his way to the bathroom. He hiked up his babydoll, then realised it was too short to get in the way. He looked down at the sea of pink froth that was his underwear. He felt sick.
CHAPTER 3
I followed her down the stairs, and as I entered the kitchen she showed me a book sitting on the work surface.
“First things first, love. Put that on the table for now, and you do NOT touch it with dirty hands! Get this lot baking, and then I will talk you through it, or at least the appendices. Now, scones of biscuits?”
“Can we do the scones? I like the crumbling bit”
“Okay, but… hang on… yes, got enough. Let’s push the boat out!”
Guess who's back? Well, technically I never left, but sometimes I forget to post things. This should make up for the long dry spell however. Enjoy a nice point of view from Shecky Green, used car salesman extraordinaire.
