Eli grew up on a ranch in Montana. He had heard about Incursions, Breaches, and the Titans that came through those breaches to slaughter some people and capture others. To him though, it had always been something that happened far away to other people. This is the first of a series. The characters differ from story to story, though. What ties the series together is the game "Wits and Wishes" that the djinn play. The object of the game is to outwit the human master and "bend" the wish for the amusement of the djinn.

This crazy Friday was raising so many unanswered questions. Was this business running on child labour? How did Ms Wilson know his girl name when he’d only been given it less than an hour ago? A warrior queen with an unusual talent is magically marooned on another planet and tries to use another type of magic, the magic of technology, to get home.

This story has a little of everything — action, adventure, drama, tragedy, romance and comedy. It also happens to be the sequel to The Distant Queen, but I wrote this story to stand on its own. I wrote The Distant Queen several years ago and it's not my best work. I didn't want anyone to have to read my earlier story to know what's going on in this one.

As the smoke cleared, I saw Andrew coming out of a crouched run quickly batted the soldier’s musket away with his left arm and hacked him with his broadsword. I’m smiling as I get to the van and Rayne takes the guitar case and gets it put in the back with hers. I smile at that and the fact that she’s opening my door for me. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

We’re kind of both smiling and she gets in and starts the van up and we head out not even really driving fast just that relaxing kind of cruising. If it was warmer out we’d have the windows down instead of up with the heater on.

Why did I agree to sleep in a tent, in December? I was awake for one very simple reason, and that had been the impact of my wife’s sub-Arctic knees against the backs of my thighs. I had thought uncharitably about the impermanence of modern marriage till she pointed out that she had brought tea for both of us.

It was warm in our nest of duvets, though, a pale light leaking through the sides of the tent.
