I remember when I was young I would kind of slowly saunter past the dress shops and shoe shops, pausing as long as I could without being suspicious, pretending not to be looking at the gorgeous dresses or the elegant high heels inside. It was not done for a boy to be interested in those things, let alone enthralled, but I couldn’t help myself.

The years went by and I got married to a wonderful girl, who I loved with all my heart. I never told her of my deepest, darkest secret, which was that I wished I had been born a girl.

The BEE’s, Bearthwaite Educational Establishment, approach to discipline was an even deeper mystery to outsiders, for poor behaviour was virtually unheard of in a BEE class. The ‘We just leave discipline to pissed off mums, other than that we just make it up as we go, because the kids know very well how they are supposed to behave,’ approach didn’t really seem to be a viable discipline model to outsiders, but it was all that there seemed to be. As far as any could tell there wasn’t even a set of acceptable behaviour protocols or guidelines or an effective chain of command either.

Stacy is a young college student who chose to travel to a new dimension to study their advanced computing technology at a prestigious university as an exchange student. Stacy thought he knew what he was getting into when he traveled, having visited before with his family and pre-arranged a sort of Amazonian foster family to take him in. Shrinking more than he had on his previous visit, he finds himself the size of a tiny Amazonian baby instead of the near Betweener size he had hoped to be. A further misunderstanding on his gender due to his name resulted in the need for a radical change to make him match the gender the university believed him to be, to maintain his scholarship. Having survived the initial CARES exam, now she and her adopted parents work to make sure she's ready to begin orientation at Emerson University. Can Stacy survive this new world? “It IS Monday,” Bryony reminds us from her seat directly behind me.

Even after a good night’s sleep, Kim’s resolution about the validity of her plan for the day ahead had not changed one little bit. Claire’s visit had actually strengthened her resolve not to leave without at least firing a few salvoes of her own. As she lay in bed that fateful Wednesday morning, she wondered how much she’d get for her home after paying off the mortgage. It was clear now that she was done with the newspaper industry. Of that she was certain. Proper Journalism was dead and just waiting to be buried and the current newspaper business model was on its last legs anyway. Unless you were an online scandal and gossip sheet there was little future in the industry.
