Well, it’s back to being Al, and her dream companion from the first night as Maddy has returned. Perhaps it wasn’t a dream after all. Dang tears, they seem to come at the worst times. We sat on the bench just outside of the changing rooms, and I didn't care if others saw me or not. Maddy hasn’t given up totally on finding The Wizard, and she may have actually seen the shop in the distance during one of her trips to the mall. “Yes, Hiromi-kun, it is, but circumstances have changed,” Tokuro Inagawa said, before going on to detail how difficult the economy was at present. Many other commodity prices were dropping. Weren’t illegal narcotics also a commodity?
Tom refused to budge an inch. Truthfully, she’d give it away to the Inagawas or whoever first showed up at the Yokohama docks when the cargo was unloaded. Naturally, that wasn’t the way organized crime worked and if Tom actually attempted what she dreamed of doing, she would end up just as dead as Reina Shimizu.

“This is a real concern Amanda. The conditioning your son has been under has changed him dramatically. This conditioning was essential however. I suggest that you look at this as a starting point with your daughter. Things will not be the same as they used to but that’s the price that is paid with this treatment.”
"There is nothing that can be done to bring back all the good things about my son? Is he lost forever?” Amanda pleaded.
“Yes, I’m afraid so. If he were to remember his former life now it would be deadly. His mind would not be able to cope and he would be irreversibly damaged. That is why the bi-weekly check-ins were so important. The program could have been stopped at any time during the first quarter if you wished.”

There was a collected gasp from the audience, and I think I heard Ellen and perhaps Mr. Peterson call out my name.

...The cool green hills had gone the way of the Dodo. Now what was left was scrapping over the rest of the solar system, killing each other for the mineral bearing rocks of the Belt, fighting over ice for the volatiles needed to sustain life.
It wasn’t the sort of world spanning disaster portrayed in movies, it wasn’t even the sort of disaster you might find in many smaller stories. No, it was just a personal apocalypse. Just the sort of thing that rips out your very soul and makes you feel like someone has stomped you into hamburger on some sidewalk somewhere. The death of a dream.
There wasn’t anything I could do to stop it, to make it better, so I whistled and hummed a tune to myself as I packed up boxes and gathered items for disposal or storage. Somehow, the tune that was stuck in my head seemed to fit.
George returned back to where he grew up still seeking that one place where he fits in. Never did he expect to find himself in a messy tangle of dark magics, ancient promises, and a power hungry hoodoo doctor. Just maybe if his crazed luck can just stay with him long enough, he'll finally find his place under the sun.
