Self Portrait
Young boy, sitting on the floor, drawing a picture.
“What’s it going to be?” Mom asks
“Me.” He says, and returns to the work, as focused as any master artist could be.
Later a picture hangs on the refrigerator door, and one would have to look very closely indeed to see the outlines of a skirt which had been erased, or the splash of pink that was under the blue.
And inside a young boy, a young girl cries, while no one listens.
For now.

Any color can be sad…
Would he be so sad about the blue if it were for a blue dress?

blue is one of my favorite colors
for this child, it was the fact that the dress had to be covered by "traditional" boy clothes that made them sad ...

loud colors to yell at each other?

Yes, its sad, but its not the end - that young child will have other chances to talk about what they feel, and who knows? One day she might yet be free...

How can a parent be so cruel and still expect the child to respect and love them?
