There’s almost ten of us actually and we’re laughing and chatting and headed into the coffee place.

They all know…they all know and they don’t care and it just really doesn’t seem to matter.

Okay…coffee and sugar and some more shopping.

And we walk into the place and I slow down and stop almost as I see other kids there and not just other kids but there’s boys there.

And they’re looking up at us all as we’re coming in.

Eeep…shit do I look alright?

After the fight .....

(Groans) “Uhhh...+

(more groans) “uhhh...”

Now, next week I expect you to return all the money you’ve bullied from kids, and stop bullying. Get me?”

*Before…

Again…it’s awhile but that doesn’t matter, I lean my head against his where it’s on my shoulder and just whisper to him.

“Keep you eyes closed and just breathe okay hon…….just feel us…me holding you and you holding me and the smell of the trees, the lawns…feel the sunshine?”

He nods into my shoulder.

“Good…now just sort of picture all of that and she’s in there too…right there Alex…right there in the sunshine only she’s really smiling at you…like she used to and not because she’s bombed or high but she’s just good…she’s watching you and seeing the great guy she’s got and she’s just smiling hon…she’s just good…cause you’re good…it’s all she needs babe…it’s all she needs.”

He’s sobbing again into my shoulder but in there…muffled in there I can hear this faint little.

“I…I can see her.”

“You’ll deal?” More sarcasm. “Okay you might have some haters but here being gay can get you lynched.”

Kira’s mom turned to Emily’s mom looking both mad and really hurting and there were tears there starting. “We’ll deal because we don’t have a choice…we don’t have anywhere else to go…we lost everything and this… (She gestured around.)…this put us in a big whole as it is…This is it this is home now and I have a daughter that needs to be who she is because the last time we went with her hiding it…it almost killed her.”

Emily got up and went out front to the main part of the diner and she looked for Kira who was smiling and taking peoples orders and looked just amazing and sunny and beautiful…had she done something like trying to kill herself.

Not this time, no…hell no.

What came before:
Lisa caught her little brother dressing in mommy's slip and some high heels. She convinced him to put them back and then agreed with him that they would have some special time together while mom and dad were out. This happened regularly over the next year or so. She explained this to her sibling. Details can be found in parts 1 and 2, but beyond what's described above it isn't critical to this story..
