Another Coffee Table book from Kristine Mitchell and Pearl S. DiMaggio, Arthena Deco: Being a Girl in the 1920's is an illustrated volume of paintings of transsexuals in the pre-Cowell/Jorgensen 1920's.
With a forward by Jennifer Brock and Introduction by Dame Suzie Heywood, this volume promises to be the talk at least of anyone who mistakenly uses it for a coaster, and perhaps some might even pick the damn thing up and look through it.

Great piece and wonderful art....
Trans(whatevers) has been around since the ancient Greeks at least. It is interesting to see the trans protitutes protrayed in Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York", in the pre Civil War period. I suppose that any condition of people has been around since people have.

Actually, Hope,, It was...
Not that I'm THAT old. It just wasn't understood in the 20's or the 40's or 60's for that matter. It wasn't till the 80's that folks figured out that we existed and even then they didn't get it!
'Course even now lots of people don't understand us; even one or two on this site who insist on making smarmy comments on what they clearly don't understand at all. I was always taught that if you didn't understand someone you were to keep your mouth shut lest you hurt someone or foolishly embarrass yourself.
Of course that was a more genteel age. They even tried to teach us good manors and to be polite... ;D
