How A Bot That

The other day I was feeling pretty good about myself. Admittedly that is a common occurrence as I'm almost as self-confident as our Fearless Leader, who has plenary power according to Mike Pence. Being a former altar boy myself I know that when Pence uses the word "plenary" he's calling on his Baltimore Catechism education to define "plenary" as absolute and unqualified.

What caused me to trip the light narcissistic was the ever growing number of hits on my old stories.

Then an disturbing thought crossed my mind.

How many of those hits are actually bots?

Bullies & Guns [Drew Leighton #5] on Amazon

Bullies with Guns, is the fifth book in the Drew Leighton series of novels. These books are a fun easy read with engaging characters.

Ripped from the headlines, students will appear at high school with guns. Fair Warning, NO STUDENTS OR TEACHERS DIE, but students do bring guns to school and there is shooting in the school office.

Stories That I Like.

I've spent 99% of my time in my apartment since the last week in February, and when I do go out I look like a Niqabi with my mask, helmet and long sleeves. There is no idle conversation on the street. My expeditions to the street on my bike are to make an effort to prevent blood clots in my legs, and the resultant Pulmonary Embolisms that I've been warned about. Most Doctors don't talk to me because of my refusal to take their drugs.

What Do Our Readers Like

I have posted 68 stories on Big Closet Top Shelf.
This week Laika said of my collection: "Such variety in your stories ... It's like some crazy anthology show that while some variation on a transgender theme is always there, it otherwise doesn't stick to any one genre. One day it's twilight zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents the next, then Love American Style or Death Valley Days."
Thank you Laika. As I said to her, that is just what I am trying to do.
But it did prompt me to look at what the readers on this site really like.

Twice delayed

Hey everyone,

Due to a power outage yesterday that cost me a lot of progress, and some issues getting the chapter to feel right, the new chapter of Twice Removed won't be finished today. I will try for tomorrow, but depending on how well it goes, it may be delayed to next week. Sorry about this, but the power outage really threw off my writing groove. :(

Got to mention my books on national radio today!

Every morning I listen to the Bob And Tom Show on Iheart radio. For the past couple of weeks they've also been streaming the show on you tube with a chat option and I've become a regular in the chat. Many of the folks in the chat even remembered to wish me a happy Birthday.

Tommy - The Trials and Tribulations of a Girl?

Well, as I feared, the next chapter of "Tommy - The Trials and Tribulations of a Girl?" is going to be delayed a bit. And there are two reasons, first and not the biggest reason is that the grandkids are here every day (mom and dad are still working). The second reason is the biggest. I got lost while working on the next chapter. I knew where I was, and I knew where I wanted to go, but NOT how to get there. The batteries in my GPS are dead, so it's no help. I'm good at using the stars to guide my travel, but it's been too cloudy here.

The Good Old Days

I just finished "Emily", and before that "Boy's School" by Sarah Lynn Morgan. I'm saving "The Gift of The Unicorn" until last. I love sweet, romantic stories, perhaps because there so little of that in lives. I've been pleased to sigh with longing, to giggle with mirth, and to nearly swoon at sweet moments.

The last I heard from Sarah is that she'd missed out on a job with NASA, and was heartbroken. I wish her well and hope that she is pleased with life and that there were bright spots.

You Need a Good Slap

Imagine your over-served roommate, Teddy, announcing to that braying jackass in the bar, “You need a good slap.”

Now slur those words and add in five salient facts: 1.) Your roommate is built like a fireplug, 2.) he boxed Golden Gloves too many years, 3.) his face is right out of Guys and Dolls, 4.) his childhood would have shocked Dickens, and 5.) recently when his girlfriend had the gall to break up with him, he painted her car – with a broom and gallon of red enamel.

Help Finding

Maryanne Peters' "LumberJackie" story reminded me of another story that I am pretty sure is somewhere on the Top Shelf here at Big Closet

Most importantly I can't remember if this actually happened in the story or was a story used within the story
(you know the type 'Take Care of your tools & they'll take care of you', and just because it worked last time it was used doesn't mean you don't carry out safety checks before use)

Person goes out for cut wood for the houses fires for winter and the chainsaws chain breaks and injures the person.

looking for a story

I saw a reference to a story on another site but it didn't give the author or the title, it just made reference to something that was "just like that story".

The reference was to a boy who had gynecomastia and was required to wear a girls swimsuit for a swim class at school. He was then invited to a party by one of the girls that turn out to be a swim party, which she hadn't told him. She loaned him a swimsuit which he wore at the party with the other girls. Then was invited to a sleep over after the party.

Debt Kitty

For the last many months there has been a running total for a "debt kitty" on the right of the home page.

It would appear that the goal will soon be reached, if it hasn't already.

Maybe you should then start amassing a strategic reserve of $30,000.

It's time for you to create a perpetuation plan. The first step in such a plan would be adequate liquidity.

You could keep your "kitty" theme by calling it a "cat" fund (catastrophe).

WITCO - otherwise known as

Woman in the Corner Office. It takes too long to type it all the time. In any case I just wanted to say I will post Friday mornings and Monday afternoons, two chapters at a time. I know they are short. They are first person 'in the moment' so will not have all the details a narrator might impart. I could have posted four chapters at once but then I would have posted once a week instead of twice.

I've had another 'Tanya' moment!

I've only gone and done my usual....

I told everyone I'd start one book and try to get it done as quickly as possible....
I lied.
It wasn't deliberate, I just went and had a sleepless night and had another idea....
That is nearly always fatal.
It kills anything I'm doing and heads me off at a tangent.

So, a few days ago I started a new book... it's called 'Namaka' and I have written 36,000 words in a short time... It's like I'm possessed by a muse who refuses to sleep!

Thank you authors

"It was the best of times; it was the worst of times" Never have Dickens' words been more apposite. Crises like this bring out the best and the worst in people. I would like to express my thanks to the other authors on this site. A small silver lining in this big black cloud is that I have more free time to read some of the magnificent stories which continue to be posted and provide a welcome distraction from the continual bad news as the virus spreads around the globe, and so many of us are confined to our homes. We all appreciate your work.

April Fools

For all of you who read today's chapter of I Wish, thank you so much for reading my work, I love you all.

That being said I pulled a small April Fools joke, by omitting the last paragraph of the chapter. It's there now though if anyone wants to see how it really ends and read the April fools comment I posted at the end.

Here's hoping you can all take a joke, but I'm going to hide from rotten foodstuffs, just in case.

*big hugs to you all*

Who's Your Data?

I’m a prisoner in my home with time on my hands.

Over the years, I’ve made the statement many times that there is very little correlation between the quality of writing and the number of hits, quotes, and kudos.

To test this -- I took the last ten stories I’ve posted on BC. . .that still are posted as free stories and listed them in order of the best to worst. They’re my stories, I can do that. Unlike kids, having a favorite story is allowed.

Author MIA somewhere?

Yesterday under the random solo list, a story by Randalynn appeared that I didn't remember reading, so I went ahead and read it. Once I started reading, I recognized most of the characters and had read some or most the stories they were in.
The question is; "Where is Randalynn"? It has been a while, literally months since the last post and longer since a new story part. I ask because I enjoyed the stories.

Progress Blog - Just started Charlie's Trails - a sequel to Charlie's Twist

Okay, I've not done this before, but I thought I'd while away the time and start a new book and keep a log of progress as I started.
This is day one and I started one hour ago @ 12:45 GMT .... I am now up to 2228 words.

The Book is called Charlie's Trials and is Book 2 in the Limbo Series.

Going on from the blog entry by Melanie yesterday about keeping up with the news trends and the dreaded Virus, I thought I'd write something wholly contemporary and include everything that is happening in the news.

what do I do with my drabbles?

After I published my last little piece, I was informed I've been mislabeling them as "drabbles". I always thought a drabble was 100 words or less, apparently its 100 words exactly. So what do I do about the section of my stories titled "Dorothy's Drabbles"?

Suggestions please.

Why bother?

I keep several short stories going so I have something to turn to when I need a break from working on a book. I was working on such a story this evening when a depressing thought struck me. The world these stories take place in no longer exists. And I'm not sure if it comes back. Most of my stories take place in the "now". But the "now" in the stories I've started, including the book I'm working on is no longer reality. So why am I bothering?

Is the Ratio of Readers to Authors Unbalanced?

We might be living in the Golden Age of Authors on BC.

But - do we have enough readers?

And - what percentage of readers are total takers, downloading the stories with no intent of ever commenting or leaving a kudos?

There has NEVER been a high correlation between the number of kudos and comments and the quality of a story. That said. . .there have been some mighty fine stories posted lately that have gone relatively unnoticed. And - it seems to me the number of hits for stories seems to have gone down lately as well.
