Chapter 80
We say so long and then we say hello.

It was early on Thursday, June 22, and today is the day Amy, and I head to New Mexico. We had just finished a great breakfast, with my parents, Amy’s parents, and Bill. Amy and I were about to excuse ourselves to finish getting ourselves together. When I swore, I heard a car pull into the driveway, a minute later there was a knock on the door.

I said, “Who the heck is here at this hour?”

My mother asked, “Tom, would you answer that please?”

As I got up, I said, “Sure mom.”

I walked over to the door, opened it, and was startled. ...

Amy and I had chosen a new car and picked it up. It was a graduation gift from our parents.

We had taken a hike on the lake trail, and this time we had a blanket with us. Then we’d washed the ‘61 Chevy but ended up getting more water on us then on the car.

My parents had taken us out for pizza. When we were back home, and Amy and I were getting ready for bed as Amy crossed off Friday on the calendar, she said, “Five and counting.”

New car. A thunderstorm. A hike.

I had received a newsletter, from the Fairbrothers, that is written for the American Indian people, and it had an excellent article in it about the two spirt people, and they’d used a picture of Kai and Ajie in it.

The most significant thing that had happened to us is that Amy and I had graduated from college, and she did it as a Summa Cum Laude graduate. I love this girl and I’m so proud of her.

Well, our parents giving us a new car was another big thing that happened.

The day after commencement Amy had to take the exam so that she could be a licensed registered nurse. And I’d just picked her up after she’d finished the exam and we were on the way to a drive-in to get her something to eat. As I drove, I asked her, “So, how do you feel you did?”

Chapter 77
A newsletter. And Commencement.

Amy and I, or really Amy and Kai, had gone to a support group meeting for two reasons, first to say so long to some people. And I also wanted to see Dr. Whitmeyer or Claire, who was supposed to be there.

Today was Monday, April 3, the first day of our final quarter of undergraduate studies. We had a calendar in our bedroom that showed the countdown to two things. The first was the countdown to commencement, and that was at seventy days. The second was the countdown to the day we leave for New Mexico, and that was at eighty days.

Amy and I only had three classes each this quarter, and none of those classes met on Friday. So, in theory, we had three day weekends. But Amy set Friday as her day to study for her test for her registered nurse's license. And that was okay because it was important to her.

Amy found out that since there was such a large graduating class of nurses that the university was going to be a testing site for the registered nurse's license exam, and that they planned to give the test on the Monday after commencement. No partying after commencement for us.

Mother and Daughter, part 7

Janet fidgeted as she sat back down in her stiff, uncomfortable seat. She was immaculately dressed in a smart black skirt suit, a clean white blouse, wrinkle-free light-coloured tights and low heels that matched that her suit. Beside her, Ellie was also dressed smartly, far more smartly than she ever had been in her soft white blouse and knee-length black pencil skirt. With her toned down make-up and her blonde hair clipped back into a ponytail, she was every inch the smart young woman.

Roy And The Road To Renee - Chapter 6

A weak January sun was shining through my bedroom window when I awoke at about 9:00. From my position in my bed I could see that I had hung up the evening gown, but the rest of my clothes from yesterday were just dumped on a chair. I patted my hair. It was still in what remained of the french twist from yesterday. I got out of bed and put a robe on over my pajamas and headed to the bathroom. A quick glimpse into the mirror revealed that I had done a poor job removing my makeup when I went to bed. I took down what was left of the french twist and with some cold cream and tissues I attacked my face, only to find that yesterday’s makeup was resisting removal. During this procedure my stomach began growling.

Chapter 76
Kai is here. The support group again.

Moving to New Mexico was now one step closer. Amy and I had filled out our forms to do our master's work at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and mailed them.

Something had told us that we should take the little tree that had grown from the twig that we’d buried a few months ago in mom’s flower garden with us to New Mexico.

I had all but given up on Maria and Mark coming out to New Mexico when Kelly and Larry were there so that the whole crew could experience a Southwestern barbecue together. But I still had a few months to try and figure something out.

And to top it off, when I’d told my Aunt Ruth what we were going to do, she had come up with most of the furniture that we needed for the apartment. May the Great Spirit bless her.

Chapter 75
It’s a go. The tree. Please Maria.

Maria appeared to be a little depressed over our pending move to New Mexico. And Amy being Amy was worried about her.

Dr. Whitmeyer had come back into our lives again. Dr. Grunewald had sent me a copy of Dr. Whitmeyer paper titled, ‘The Nádleeh. The two spirit people of the Navajo.’ He has promised to write this as part of his apology for what he had tried to do to Dr. Grunewald and Larry at the seminar. Everyone that has read it was happy with what Dr. Whitmeyer had written.

Then Kelly, Larry, Amy, and I had talked about how to get Maria and Mark out to the resort with us for one of the Friday barbecues.

Our package from the University of New Mexico had arrived. And Amy had told my mother, that “It’s kind of scary.”

Chapter 74
Dr. Whitmeyer again. How can we do this?

We had made a decision on Amy’s scholarships. It was New Mexico. Some people we told were happy for us, some were sad, and some were surprised.

How did I feel about this?

We’d be leaving all of our friends and family, that made me sad. We’d be going to someplace that we loved, that made me happy. We’d probably make new friends our age out there. That was a good thing. I’d be with Amy, and that made me extremely happy. So yes I was happy about this, but at the same time nervous. It was a big move, but we have friends and family out there.

Tonight we were having ice cream with the crew, Maria, Mark, Kelly, and Larry. And we were talking with them about having to go out to New Mexico early because they wanted Amy to take a couple of classes.

We also learned that Kelly and Larry were planning on going out to the resort in early July. And we’d told them about the barbecue.

During that part of the discussion, we hadn't been paying attention to Maria and Mark. That was until, I heard Maria almost whisper, “I wish we could be there.”

Laura, part 20

“This one’s for table six,” my colleague Saffron says to me as she places two hot cups of coffee on my tray. I take the opportunity to stealthily straighten my tight miniskirt before grabbing my tray and taking it over to the young couple at the corner table.

“Ah, thank you!” The young man says with genuine gratitude as I hand him and his girlfriend their drinks. “Can we also order a plate of chips to share, please?”

“Sure!” I enthuse. “What flavour would you like?”

“Let’s try the chilli and cheese,” the young woman says with a devilish grin.

You only live once.

Amy and I had dinner with my parents, her parents, and her brother Bill. The main reason for this dinner was to talk about the two scholarships offers that Amy had received. And talk we did. Bill’s comment of, 'you only live once' may have flipped a switch with Amy.

We’d also planned a dinner with the crew to show them the photo album of the fake wedding that Amy and I had, with me as the bride and Amy as the groom. We also decided to surprise them by Tammy dressing like the bride she was that day.

Now, I was standing just outside the door to the den, dressed to the nines as a bride, listening to the discussion over the photo album.

Summer of Love - Part 15

Walking back home from Aurora's Halloween party, Underdog and the cosmonaut were far from the strangest thing on the streets this warm Halloween weekend night. It seemed all the frustrated creativity in West Hollywood came out that night.

“Ruble for your thought” I said in my lame attempt at a 'Natasha' accent.
He chuckled quietly. “I was just thinking about that guy at the party. The one who gave me his card. I told him I don't do musical impressions.... well, not singers.... sure, I can play like anyone from Hendrix to Alvino Rey, but.... voices? ….man, that's something else.... still he seems to think we could do something together. ….I have no idea what.....”

“One way to find out.” I said quietly. “Call the guy Monday.” Colin nodded but remained lost in thought. “...but if he wants you to come in the underdog costume... hang up!”

That worked. Colin let out one loud laugh. And the grin returned to his face as he came back to the present.

Colin and I were inseparable through the holiday season.

Another talk. A phone call. The wedding dress.

Kelly and Larry were now married. And there was some dramatics between Kelly and her cousin Mary Beth. And Amy ended up being Kelly’s matron of honor.

When we returned home from the wedding, there was, along with our grades, a letter from the University of New Mexico's College of Nursing for Amy. They were offering her a full ride scholarship for her master's degree. The College of Nursing here at home had already offered Amy a full ride scholarship. Amy and I talked about this, and it was decided to have Amy’s parents over for dinner with my parents, and have a family meeting.

In bed that night and cuddled up with Amy, I’d said, “You do know what I’ll want to do if we move to New Mexico. Don’t you?”

Chapter 71
The wedding. A letter. A talk.

We were with Maria and Mark in Kelly’s hometown, Muncie Indiana, for Kelly and Larry’s wedding. And Maria and Mark had learned some interesting things about me.

On Friday we had a wedding rehearsal, a rehearsal dinner, and then we decorated the church hall for the reception. Larry didn’t want a bachelor’s party. But the girls went to a bachelorette party set up by Kelly’s cousin Mary Beth who was also the maid of honor. The party had been a bust thanks to a stripper. And there had been some nasty words between Kelly and Mary Beth.

It was possible that Mary Beth wouldn’t show up at the wedding. Who would take her place?

Amy had told me that what she saw with Mr. O’Brian and his nervous breakdown was looking good. But we’d see happens with the wedding. I was keeping my fingers crossed.

Saturday all the girls were at a beauty shop to have their hair, makeup, and nails done. And they’d go from there to the church in a limousine. Larry, Mark, and I were sitting around the hotel until we needed to put on our tuxedos and drive to the church. We wouldn’t see the girls again until the wedding. Hmm, let’s see, where would I rather be?

Chapter 70
Mark and Maria learn things. And, not good.

We had gotten a letter back from Amy’s mother’s cousin in England that confirmed that one of Amy’s grandmothers was an Indian girl from the ‘Colonies’ by the name of Weetamoo, or as they called her in England, Willow. And Amy was very excited about it. But why can't I feel Amy’s native ancestry like I could our lawyer, Mrs. Edwards?

Now we were over in Muncie, Indiana for Kelly and Larry’s wedding. And we’d met the whole family. Mr. O’Brian had apologized to me. One of Kelly’s brothers, Kevin, I couldn’t read. He was the strong silent type. Another brother, Jack, the priest, I think he tried to get me into a debate over religion, and I quickly quashed that. I hope. And her other brother, Connor had been hurt when the helicopter he was flying crashed. I think he’s lucky to be alive.

We’d spent the evening with Kelly’s family, and the four of us were now on the way back to the hotel. And I asked, “Amy, what were you and Kelly whispering about?”

Auditions

“You might as well give it up Casey. No one is going to hire you for an acting job, especially a male role. You look like you could be my little sister or in a kiddy show.”

Casey had barely made it back in time for his shift at Pete’s Steak House. He looks at Harry as he slips his apron on over his black t-shirt. He was lucky that he remembered to keep a change of clothes for work in his 1998 Mustang. The body needed some work and it had an oil leak, but it got him where he needed to go. He could fix it, thanks to his uncle showing him how to work on cars at his garage.

Chapter 69
A letter from England. Back at the O’Brians.

Larry had a nasty run-in with his future father-in-law and had received a black eye. The crew had gotten together to not only comfort Larry but to try to figure why it happened and what to do about it. Amy had concluded that Kelly’s dad might be having a nervous breakdown.

The Chief Nastas Todachine Memorial Scholarship was finally a go.

Today, Saturday, we had some fun when all the bride maids in Kelly’s wedding came to town for dress fittings. And Tammy went along. Of course, only Amy, Kelly, and Maria knew that Tammy wasn’t a real girl. It appeared that Kelly and Maria were a little nervous undressing in front of Tammy. But a talk afterward seems to have gotten them to understand who Tammy is. Maybe.

And now the crew was coming over for frybread tacos. And lessons on how to make frybread. So after Amy and I were back home, Tammy became Kai. A blond Kai. Well, we need a Southwestern girl to make a Southwestern meal. Don’t we?

Martha was frustrated. For what seemed like the thousandth time, urine was splattered around the toilet in their little bungalow. For years, she’d ignored her son’s inconsideration and cleaned up after him. Now, energized by the Me Too movement, she felt put upon. Of course, cleaning up after an eleven year old was a long way from sexual harassment, but it was all part of males mistreating women.

“Mmph,” I hear a familiar soft, feminine voice moan as my eyes slowly open. It’s a voice that brings back both good and bad memories- bad memories as it’s a voice that I had for the first sixteen years of my life, a voice that made me cringe every time it passed my lips. But it also brings good memories as in this case, it’s not coming from my mouth, but from the mouth of the beautiful redhead that’s snuggled up against me.

“Morning babe,” I say, waking Chloe up with a gentle kiss. “We should probably get ready- big day today, heh.”

We had a talk with Amy’s mother about her ancestors. Then called Amy’s grandmother and found that one of Amy’s mother’s cousins in England had done some research on the family. Amy wrote a letter to the cousin asking about the possibility of an Indian ancestor. All this over a dream.

Then a hike on the lake trail had become interesting, very interesting.

We met with our lawyer and financial advisor about the scholarship. And Cathy, our lawyer, met Tom for the first time.

Mom and dad had come back from Hawaii. And now Amy and I were on the way to Kelly and Larry’s apartment to find out what had happened with Kelly’s father and Larry. It didn’t sound good.

Amy and I walked up to the door to Kelly and Larry’s apartment. As we had parked next to their car, we knew that Maria and Mark were already here. I knocked on the door, and Kelly quickly opened it. I hate to say this, but she looked like hell.

We’d left the house followed quickly by Kelly and Larry. Then we’d checked into a local motel and ended up sharing a room.

We’d been given the cooks tour of Muncie by Kelly. The last place we stopped was the church where Kelly and Larry were to be married. We had a nice talk with the priest. Then we found Mrs. O’Brian at the motel when we got back, and we discussed what had happened at lunch.

Then we went star gazing, Did the shooting star that Amy saw mean something?

Amy and I had gone with Kelly and Larry to Kelly’s hometown to meet her parents, the O’Brians. At first, it was okay, and then it got ugly. Kelly’s father had asked if I was a hippy. And I responded with, “Sir I am not a hippy! And neither is my wife. I’m a Navajo. A proud member of the Navajo Nation.”

Then, Mr. O’Brian had said, “Oh. So, you’re an Indian.”

The last bonfire and the journey home.

Tonight was our last night in New Mexico. My two aunts had done Ajie's and my hair. And we were at a bonfire in long skirts and fancy blouses. This would be our last bonfire of this year.

And along with some friends Chief Peshlakai was also here. Why?

Chief Kinlicheeny and Naainish had brought him along to apologize for what he’d done at the dance competition. He tried to apologize, but I wasn’t in the mood to accept it. So, instead, I gave him a piece of my mind.

The three of them, Chief Kinlicheeny, Chief Peshlakai, and Naainish, had talked after Ajie, Uncle Paul, and I had walked away from them. And now the three of them were walking towards us.

Now what?

Monday Morning at 08:01

The first day of sophomore year I walked down to the school bus stop. My best friend since we were toddlers, but who had spent summer somewhere else, was already standing there waiting.

- Hi, Sally! Love that dress!

Sally looked at me surprised. I don’t know why. That dress really was beautiful and it made her look gorgeous. The thin black pantyhose made the most of her stunning legs.

- Jake! You knew. You knew all the time!
- Yep. I probably knew before you did yourself

I answered my best friend who the last time I’d seen him had been known as Sal, short for Salomon. I was happy for her. It had taken her much longer time to come out of her shell than I had expected and hoped. I was looking forward to what new relationship we would have. I really was.

It was Sunday morning, our last full day here. I was lying in bed enjoying the feeling of Amy’s naked body cuddled up to my naked body. I’m glad Amy came up with the idea of sleeping in the nude.

Yesterday had been a good and a bad day. A fun time at the dance competition had turned into a bad time thanks to Chief Peshlakai, and I’d almost put an end to the scholarship thanks to him. But thanks to Dibe I hadn’t. And Ajie, Naainish, and I had had a long talk with Dibe’s family.

But today we had to get ready to head home. And this time instead of flying, we’d be driving.

"Okay," Monique replied, nodding her head as she realised that her presence in the room was not welcome. "We- we'll be outside if you, you know, wanna get up..." The dark-skinned girl sighed as she led Kacey back into the flat's living room, where Janet waited with a look of anticipation on her face.
