Agreement to our proposals was surprisingly quick, given the allegations about ‘Wily Orientals’ I had grown up with, and within two weeks we were already at the stage of drafting a training roster, splitting Maz and I so that we could work twice as fast while still leaving time for our childcare responsibilities.

The first lot were the ‘matrix’ people, including Audrey, who turned up in one of my classes. They were all frighteningly intense in their approach to the work, and I began to suspect that the local working culture might be just a little competitive, maybe with a touch of canine cannibalism.

Chapter One: The Surprise

Thursday, November 4, 2004

My girlfriend, Megan, was in her mid-forties, with shoulder-length brown hair, and very beautiful even on a bad day. We had worked at the same data center for about four years before I changed jobs and got a divorce. Megan and I have been together for about 2 years. She was well known for her tendency to display generous amounts of cleavage.

I realized I wasn’t in a womb; I was in an egg. They said anything was possible when you ethertraveled, and that was one of those possibilities; many ethertravelers had reported being born from eggs.

I tried to bust my way out of the egg, but failed at first. I slept again later, and the next time I awoke I was feeling hungry. The yolk sac was empty. Now I really needed to hatch, to break my way out of the egg. I couldn’t tell whether I had arms or wings at this point, but they had elbows. After trying several other strategies, by poking both elbows to opposite sides at the same time, I was able to break a hole in the eggshell. Once it was broken, it was pretty easy to break the rest of it.

I had just returned from a friend’s house and was greeted by my Mom at the front door. I immediately went into self-preservation mode as the look on her face meant she was in no mood to be manipulated by her good for nothing son.

I made good grades in school, didn’t get into any trouble and seemed to be well liked by some of my classmates, but apparently still not good enough for Mom by the expression on her face. I briefly wondered what I did this time, from the look on her face it must be earth shattering.

The last day in the hospital was a blur. Jenn and Amy helped her pack up her cosmetics and toiletries. Jenn had brought her an outfit that would be comfortable for the ride home. Amy had told Conor to wait in the parking lot until she called to tell him they were on their way.

Alex had a terminal Cancer diagnosis and thought she would die before she got to be the girl she always was inside. That all changes when she's in the wrong place at the right time and gets transported to another world and into the body of a girl. So what if she's not human, she's alive and a girl. Now if only she had her sister with her to navigate this new world and her new responsibilities. Wait, she's here too? The passage of their souls between worlds may have doomed the Earth to apocalypse, but Alex and Michelle won't be there to see it and they have enough problems on their hands.
 

Chapter 13

On Sunday morning, Wendy took her daughter into Coventry. As they walked into the Cathedral, there were more people wanting to take pictures and wanting selfies with Willow. They saw the poster that advertised the day’s music being played by ‘Willow Rose – not only the organist of the hit song ‘Love and Marriage’ but also the leader of the ‘Summer Rose Quartet.”

The Dean met them.

The room was bathed in pastel pink tones, with airy curtains letting in the afternoon light. The floor was covered in colorful wigs, sparkly shoes, brushes, and children's makeup. Sitting on the edge of the bed, eight-year-old Tomás held the straps of a lavender glittering dress in both hands, looking at himself with a mix of wonder and longing.

Sis owned a security company doing certain surveillance jobs as requested or needed. Most of the time it was just following someone and making sure they did not get them selves in trouble. Most of the people she was paid to keep track of were fairly high profile, so were instant targets for news media and other individuals who had varied and nefarious reasons to exploit those people.

Quite often I got invited along, two people out wandering along not standing out like an individual would be. In this particular case me being along saved the day.
