Charlene never realized how much there was to being a woman of the hills. “Anytime you want to back out and be something besides a woman, you can,” was the words of Lizzie Jane. What better way to have a summer romance than to use the most common historical place and time used by romance novelists, London, during the Regency period. In this case November 1814 to after Waterloo.

Prelude:

September 1,1066

“Thou art the ‘Guardian of the Rose?’”

"...and mostly we ignored the movie, and Lisa whispered jokes about Zack, and I denied them, and she told me about two boys that she likes: a cute one and a nice one, and I said go for nice -- unless he's totally gross. (Right answer for a girl?)"

"...Marsh, I mean, I know lots of boys do babysit, but they don't brag about it. They would wear shirts that say "World's Best Lawn Mower," or something. Right?"

PROLOGUE: Last spring these letters began showing up in my email. I thought the address had been typed wrong and sent a reply warning the writer, but it bounced back as undeliverable. I know that seems impossible, but the letters are here, and I think the web holds many weird gremlins.

Last night I decided that, perhaps, the universe brought them to me to show to others and, if you can get over your qualms about eavesdropping on strangers, some of you might find them interesting too.

"Gillian told me I have to go to dinner tonight as Belinda."

Paul, to his credit, struggled manfully to not laugh. "She can't do that. She can't ask you to do that."

Looking toward Charlene, the judge asked, “You look like a girl to me, but you have a boy’s name. Do you wish to explain?”

“If you felt like a monkey, would that make you swing through the trees like a monkey? I am sorry, but that reasoning is not sufficient.”

"You sure picked a hell of day to come out!"

"Come out!?" I squeaked, my eyes big as saucers.

Tears began to fill Charles’ eyes as he spoke. “My dad is a deacon and he kicked me out of the house and told me not to come back until I changed. I can’t change. I have tried and tried. I thought he loved me. I was raised in church and that has been important in my life. Why does God want me to be miserable — putting me in the wrong body and saying that it is wrong and requiring me to live a life that I cannot?”

Ever do something stupid? I mean, really stupid. No, stupider than that.

Lizzie Jane noticed that Charles had used some of her mascara — very lightly, but having seen Charles before, it was obvious. Charles realized that she knew what he had done, so he replied, “Sorry — I will go back in and wash it out.”

“Let's just say that I know.”

Ruby had him practice putting on and taking off makeup for most of the evening before finally disappearing about nine p.m.

Davey, or Dee Dee, wrapped the fluffy robe around his, or her, waist and tied the belt.
