A Short Story

I was born in 1922 on a farm in Kansas. I wish I could tell stories of the time when our farm was green, productive and profitable but those were just things I heard. The first big drought came in 1930, and after that the dust storms destroyed all that we had. The end finally came in April 1935, on the day they called “Black Sunday” when the dark dust from the west blocked out the sun.

The day everything goes wrong.

I am a recent addition to a work group, its sole function to court and sell a new customer our products. Our company manufactures different female products, from cosmetics to lingerie, and this retailer had withstood our best efforts to get them on board.

So our company put together a select group of people with different skills to approach and try to land the customer. All were female except me, my field of expertise not often inhabited by females. I am the numbers person, supplying all matter of statistics to impress and influence sales of our products, yeah right.

After a bit, the plates are empty, and the table is covered in nothing but scraps and empty glasses. The food was undeniably good, and for the first time in what feels like forever, I feel full in a way that doesn’t come with the weight of stress or exhaustion.

After what feels like a year of waiting at the inn—Kaida fussing with her hair every five minutes and me trying not to pace a hole in the floor—she finally looks up from the mirror and announces, “Alright, it’s time to meet them!”

I freeze, my stomach doing an unhelpful little flip. “Already?”

I quickly count the pile of coins on the ground, my fingers brushing over the cool metal as I try to keep my focus. “One hundred thirty-eight,” I say finally, leaning back slightly.

Before we begin this is my second story so please bear with me as I learn and grow. I am not the best writer and my dyslexia doesn’t help with it lol. I appreciate the support of my previous story.

This story follows Sarah as she grows her salon and needs workers. An old friend from college visits, and they come up with an idea to help her fill the salon’s roster.
