Chapter 24 – The Council

As I watched the green light above the camera turn to red my stomach tried to rebel one more time. I didn’t want to do this. Our grief should have been a private thing, shared only with our family and the small community of our friends. Jan’s death had been hard enough without the media avalanche we were being buried under. I was about to interviewed once again when all I wanted to do was cuddle with Bea and our remaining children as we tried to comfort each other. Someone had to speak out though and I am much more accustomed to public speaking than Bea is.

There arent many of us left, because humans dont believe in mischievous spirits anymore, which is one reason why I wanted this story written.

I felt relieved when my big sis Mary entered my room. I wanted to talk to her about this private school idea and about her and Alyssa making out.

“Hey, sis. Finally, we can talk. I am not sure what to think about going to a private school. It would open a lot of opportunities but I think I would miss Sammy, mom and dad and our town too much. I don’t want to just run away.” I told Mary, feeling unsure about how to proceed.

A door swung open into a lounge full of so-called gentlemen of the early nineteenth century. A succubus named Phoebe entered wearing only a collar, a corset, and a see-through gown. She would feast. Judge Ruth Walinkiewicz was about to surprise the parents of one Mark Thomas, helping Mark in the process, if only she could get him to trust someone again.

The sound of footsteps distracted her, very heavy sounding footsteps and Nyssa turned her gaze toward the front of the cave to see the dragon coming right toward them. It was the single biggest creature that she had ever seen, or even imagined, and could easily swallow her whole. How did those people not notice it? She needed to get them out of the cave. Kyra ran to the back of the dancing studio toward her mother, who was lying on the ground. “Mom!” she called out.

Her mother looked as though she had taken a beating. She barely breathed.

Hours later, they were at the hospital, and the doctors assured Kyra that her mom would be alright. It wasn’t right at all. Not two days had passed since they had last talked, and Kyra entered the studio hoping to break the silence that had lasted since their ferry ride.
