My name was Chris. I had been the youngest of four boys. My older brothers were all away at college. My parents were divorced, and I was living with my mother. It was on my eighteenth birthday that my mother and I went out to dinner. Toward the end of the meal, Mom said, “Chris, this is your last day as a boy, because tomorrow you will be my daughter.” I laughed and said, “Mom, get real, I will always be your son, and nothing will ever change that.” She smiled, “I have always wanted a daughter, and from tomorrow you will be known as Crystal.” I frowned.

The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the sidewalk as Callum and Megan made their way home from school, their backpacks heavy with the usual collection of textbooks and half-finished assignments. Megan's cheerleading pom-poms peeked out from the top of her bag, the blue and white streamers catching the golden light and swaying with each step.

Change the subject, Rhodes.

“This is a nice place, Paula”

“It should be. Cost us an arm and a leg. Or rather, in my case, nearly an arm”

“Um… Lexie and I share a few friends. I think I know what you mean”

She nodded, her smile wistful.

“Yup. Just another thing I owe to Diane and the rest. Mo had a lot of assets, and they came my way”

I bite my lip as I stare at my friend, trying to judge her reaction to what I just said — is it surprise, or shock, or, as much as I hope it isn’t, disgust?

“…Bailey?” I ask hesitantly. “Did you hear — I, umm, I meant what I said. I’ve — I’ve always wished that I was a girl. Pl- please say something?” I bite my lip as Bailey looks at me, her mouth slightly ajar as she tries to find the words to reply. Please, I think to myself. Please be understanding, is that really too much to ask for?

Yolanda’s smile was legend. It was sunshine and rainbows, sure, but it was sword and shield too. Sometimes it came easy; other times it required determination and grit.
