Mom and dad were merciful, they didn't disturb us until we were ready to get up. It's a good thing we had gotten used to sharing a bathroom, because it takes a while to get beautiful. We didn't go all out like the day before, Aida gave us a much simpler look for a casual day. I resolved to start learning how to do makeup magic if I had any intention of letting Lori out more often when this week was over.

It had been a hard night. Eddie had stayed up most of the night, unable to sleep. He’d tossed and turned, and when he finally did fall asleep, he had dreams where he ended up fighting with everyone.

He hurried downstairs, poured a bowl of sugar-encrusted flaked corn, filled it 3/4 full of milk, grabbed a spoon, slopped half of the milk on the floor, brushed a towel off the counter, took a bite of the cereal, pushed the towel over the spilled milk with his foot, took another bite of the cereal, kicked the towel in front of the washing machine sitting in the corner, dropped the still full bowl into the sink, and hurried out the door.

“Eddie!” his mom called as the door slammed shut. She hurried to the door and opened it, knowing the teenager wouldn't respond, but she tried anyway. True to form, he continued running toward the highway.

Over the next couple of months, Dan mentored Mandy at work and Mandy mentored Dan in the skills of dressing and makeup. Dan worked late at least once a week. He had told his wife that there was a lot of work involving turning the company into a PLC.

She didn’t mind. She said he seemed a bit happier these days with all the extra work. Dan was very careful. He always showered before he went home. He was always checking himself in the mirror in the car before he went inside.

It doesn’t seem to be used so much these days – not since Joni Mitchell saw him taken away in the big yellow taxi, but it seems right to call him that. He is old and he is a man, and I am neither of those. And he is mine, I suppose. I am definitely his.

This was a story I set aside to put up on Patreon last year. I don’t know if anyone read it. Certainly no-one interested enough to sign on to my page. It remains the only thing I have put on that platform. It’s one of the stories in a collection I sent to Erin for publication, should she want to. Anyway, here it is, in full, for your enjoyment as I hate to see a story wasted.
