The Machine

The Machine

My mother was really gonna do it.

She was going to put the Machine on my head.

And I was just sitting there.

Why wasn’t I fighting this?

I should have been swearing, kicking, threatening to run away.

I mean, I was a boy, and boys aren’t supposed to use the Machine.

But I just sat there.

They took me to the chair, and put the Machine on my head.

I trembled, and closed my eyes.

Finally the Machine was done, and my mother lead me over to the mirror.

And even in boys clothes I could see it.

I looked like a girl.

I ... was a girl.

I ... was happy?

Dam it, my mother knew I was trans before I did!

And who knew a different hairstyle dried by a hair dryer could make such a difference?

End.

I remember "the machine"! I remember the home version of "the machine" but also another version.

My reply kept growing, so I sort of wrote a story of sorts instead. lol LINK

In a flash....

... you brought back a memory.... so thank you soooo much! I love your writing.
I recalled the first time I went under the "machine"........ voluntarily........ hoping..... imagining......
No, my Mother wasn't involved - indeed, didn't know a thing about my plan.
But yes, it was a life changing moment........ I phoned a salon, away from home.......
I asked for a style that needed curlers.......
And even in boys clothes I could see it.

I looked like a girl.

I ... was a girl.

I ... was happy!!

Thanks Dorothy, what a lovely Christmas present! :0

It took a minute, but the relays finally snapped into place and I realized what the machine is.

Others have feelings too.

You got me!

I love short stories, and here you manage to set a scene and deliver a twist, all in less than 150 words. Genius.

As I Read...

I began by wondering what kind of machine that was. What kind of machine Mom would put on his son's head, that boys weren't supposed to use. Then hairdryer came to mind. Then I remembered the ending, and that it was supposed to be a twist. Now I'm wondering what was I supposed to be expecting? What was I thinking of when I commented? Perhaps a monstrous machine that a wicked mother would use on her sensitive son?
