The next day Ryan woke up feeling great. His energy had returned and he felt like he could conquer the world. He took a look at himself in the mirror and almost forgot that he was a changed man. He went down for some breakfast and on his way back up his mother pulled him into her bedroom.

"Ryan, how do you feel about attending Ms. Jacob's class today?"

Ryan had decided to keep calm and play this new class as no big deal. He had developed a somewhat convoluted sense of power over his virus and going to some stupid class wasn't going to phase him.

Well, this has got to be a giant red flag.

I remember reading somewhere that the human heartbeat cycle has a weakness such that if the heart receives a blow at just the wrong instant in the cycle it will stop beating.

Well, I spent a solid five minutes hitting my own chest trying to make my heart stop beating.

At church tonight, someone mentioned she and her partner were celebrating their second wedding anniversary and... god damn it... I just... couldn't help being reminded of what I am no longer able to even believe I will ever have.

He shrugged at that. "I expected something of the sort, or I wouldn't have invited you in. You are... unbalanced. In here." He pointed at his chest. "What is inside you does not match the outside. Why do you think I can help?" Just a trace of impatience, a hint of master dealing with a dull student. Executed to perfection.

I lowered my eyes, studying the fine wisps of steam rising out of my cup. "I have new abilities, that I am still getting used to. Strength. Speed. I am very difficult to hurt." I raised my eyes to his. "I'm a blunt instrument. It would be very easy for me to kill a person with a single blow. I don't need anyone's help for that. It is very hard for me to not kill a person with a single blow, and that's where I hope you can help."

Ben Turner offered a half-smile. "I believe I can help. Do not strike anyone. Thank you for coming."

What is less known is that there are unrecognized patients who predate the first acknowledged case. Sometimes these people are carriers, like Typhoid Mary, but oftentimes they are merely the unsung victims who's stories are not tied into the whole until long after the papers are written. Jesse Lee was such a person, this is his story.

Story is a prequel to and is set in Lilith Langtree's 'The Center' universe.
