Grandma On Guard - Chapter 3 of 14

Chapter 3 - Some Quick Thinking

Paula
It's funny how white objects seem to fluoresce under the LED streetlamps they use around the warehouses. Standing there sweating in the warm summer night while listening to the other intruder moaning in the background, I could see the bright white bra around my partner Titus' chest like it was Day-Glo from my misspent youth. No black-light was needed, but there certainly was a surreal quality of the scene like that which had dominated so many parties when I was young and stupid.

Call it what you want: night shift, night guard, night watch, graveyard shift, anchor watch if you're a naval type, it means you are awake while everybody sane in the world is sound asleep.

At 22 George was excited. He had not long ago completed a grueling course in business management, which was a total plus.

Mostly he was happy to be finally free of his over obsessive parents. Having at least two states between him and his parents made him happy, mind you he only had the one suitcase of clothes. Part of that contained his Ipad, chargers, and his few pictures in an envelope with his papers.

Stone

Chapter 44 – Back to Sea

The first voyage of the ship went well, although it took 22 days instead of two weeks. Stone was not terribly upset that it was late. He had told the captain to take three weeks if needed. The extra time would allow the crew to learn how to effectively use the jib sails. The extra day was also not a worry as the Blue Point lighthouse had sent a runner to Stone to say that the ship had been sighted, and was expected on the following day.

The Widower

It was a bright mild sunny summer day, not right for a funeral, Skies should be grey and cloudy, the rain should be coming down, it should all help to stress the misery of why we were here.

I was coming out of the crematorium with Colin, the husband of Julie, my best friend since schooldays, we had just seen her coffin go behind the curtains to the strains of her favourite hymn, Jerusalem.

Patrick apologised that he was the substitute but promised Tracey would be back soon to give her approval and make any final recommendations since it was her salon now. She had taken out a loan and with some private financial support from a friend she had bought out the owner. Jobs were secure because the salon had a good reputation and he was now the senior stylist.

You Are a Meany Chapter 10

After the beach vacation Fred was interacting a lot more with his family. He made it a point to know exactly what was going on in his home. When the loving father and husband asked about everyone’s day it was not just part of his greeting. He pried if anyone gave short answers. Also, anything out of the ordinary lead to Luke’s Lord Protector to become The Inquisitor. This meddling was going to put a delay on Lori’s revenge on Luke. The Brat Princess still had not forgiven nor forgotten about the transgression the commoner committed against the queen.

Mary-Ann

Well every good story I have heard about starts at the beginning, or so I am told.

I would love to say I was born at a good time for both of my loving parents.

The truth is I don't believe my mother knew my father. It was a one night fling after a very drunk bar night. My mother was young at the time. Around seventeen, and like most of the girls her age, believed a one night of sex was not enough to get her pregnant. She was wrong.

The Final Rescue

This is one of those stories that just comes to mind one day when thinking about... Well, nothing really. I was driving in AZ, at the time, near Kingman, and I was bored. I began to wonder about Lassie, and Timmy's penchant for getting into trouble, and how long a dog's patience would last. This very short story is the result.

The Final Rescue

It had been a busy day for Timmy and Lassie. They had been out, running and playing around the farm. Lassie had been keeping a sharp eye on the boy, and had already stopped him from throwing rocks at both a

THE SILENCE AND THE CACOPHONY

As they crested the pass Edrydd was aware of the silence of the scene in front of him, silent that was other than the constant hum of the biting insects and the splashing of the fish rising for the insects which filled the air above the water in such a thickth as to make the distant water appear to be coated with a shimmering, black film of oily tar.

Getting Lost in the Girly-Girly Swamp

I dearly love my twin. I may complain about the consequences but I really do love Alexis. Fraternal twins, of course. We couldn’t be more different. Alexis is the younger one, by 28 minutes. Already as a baby Alexis was small and prone to get sick. I on the other hand have always been “robust”. I’ve always felt very protective about Alexis. That’s how I got dragged into the “Girly-girly swamp”.

The Repair Man

This is another real oldie from circa 2010/2011

It was a normal Saturday and I was doing my weekly grocery shopping on virtual autopilot. You know what I mean. You buy the same items from the same shelves at the supermarket every week unless they had moved everything just for the sake of moving it and to annoy their customers.

I’d gotten everything on my mental list and was now at the checkout waiting to be served. I refused to use those automated or self-service checkout unless there was really no other option.

“Yeah, total well being. Like being well fed, clothed and warm, but gratitude for the correction. Weäl. Weäl. That right?”
Warbler nodded and added, “It also includes feeling good inside your head concerning life.”
Jed grinned and said, “Like all your weäls going in the same direction.”
After he’d explained the pun in and the meaning of his remark to an initially puzzled Warbler, she was choking with laughter as she responded, “At least one of your weäls it going in the wrong direction for certain, Jed.”
