XIV Behold! The Nightmare

Champery was built on the lower southern slopes of the mountain Croiz de Culet. Corvo University and the main location of Corvus Scriptorium were located in Champery. Their shared library was overfilled so they used small black powder to excavate tunnels into the mountain to use as library stacks.

Milsy's day is disturbed by a call for help from three guildsmen who are installing the steam engine which will pump water in the High Tower. What she discovers causes great concern and also upsets her usual calm disposition. Tarvan's presence is required to restore order - and prevent a disaster.

33 - The Steam Engine

“Exactly where have you heard that name before?” I said as I wiped the sleep from my eyes.

“Savernake Forest,” exclaimed Jemma.

The trouble with my partner was that when she was overly tired or woken up in the middle of the night, sometimes she spoke total gibberish. I’d learned to handle it but many people we had to work with couldn’t handle her without losing their patience pretty quickly.

My brain was slowly starting to work and as I tried to remember the last time I’d or rather we’d been to Savernake Forest. This is an area of ancient woodland to the South East of the town of Marlborough in Wiltshire. Then it came to me.

“Oh, you must mean Farthings home?”

“Yes, that’s it. He left his home very much in a hurry, didn’t he?” reasoned Jemma.

“Yeah, we stopped him as he left in his Porsche. If I recall you lit him up with your target light and his face turned to ash. But what else did you remember?”

Webster’s dictionary defines Speed as the fallowing: the rate of change of position along a straight line with respect to time over a set distance. In other words, the quicker you can get from one place to another. The question is what do you, do when your family has spent the last two generations in search of ways to accomplish this goal faster and faster. Would do you do when the family business is the search for more Speed. For Robert ‘Robby’ McGuire the answer is easy. You grab your sister and strap on a pair of Formula One racecars then go for broke.

Karl and the others were so engrossed in formulating their plans on how to get Karen's programming they never noticed the mounting excitement in the air around them.

Raven drags herself through the front door. She was soaked to the bone from the rain. The day had started off nice and sunny. It was just a little chilly when she left to go to work early this morning.

She hadn’t noticed the storm clouds, till after lunch. The garage was doing good, so Jordan cooked food for everyone. He cooked on a homemade grill he kept behind the garage. It was a simple lunch of hot dogs, bratwurst and hamburgers. There was a chef salad that Jerry made, there was potato salad and macaroni salad as well. Of course, there was beer and soda.

Jaxon Dundee watches as a Lear Jet lands at Alice Springs Airport. He had been contacted by Captain Burghoff about some new recruits flying in for dessert and jungle training. He suggested that he takes them out for a week in the desert and to the rainforest for a week.

Jaxon didn’t mind and the person sponsoring the people coming in, paid him good money to put his recruits through the wringer. He wonders how many the training camp sent this time. He waits for the jet to come to a full stop, before approaching it.

“Has anyone ever told you that you shop like a stoner?” Ashleigh peeked into my cart as we approached the self-checkout lane at the grocery store. Inside, as I well knew, she would see three bottles of lemon juice, a bag of tomatoes, six potatoes, and a quart of ice cream. I suppose she would think that was a little weird, but ever since I’d been changed and allowed to eat for the first time, I’d been craving citrus and random dairy products. Potatoes were just a plus today.

All non-Corvoian Christian priests along with the few Arianist priests were replaced by Corvoian Christian priests. The removed priests were taken to the regional administrative city. There they were given options ranging from re-education to slavery. Likewise Corvoian civilian administrators ousted all local administrators, rounding up all who held positions of authority and power along with their families as their possessions were confiscated. This included the pompous senators, military officers and other governmental officials.
