Melanie's sophomore year draws to a close: very different from how it started.

Each student had been issued a name tag with her first name in large black lettering. We were told that the tags were to be worn as part of our school uniforms. On Friday, a dark-haired girl whose tag boldly proclaimed her name to be “Lauren” sat across the table from Amie and me. Lauren had an air of smugness about her. She seemed much more interested in the two of us than she was in eating lunch, and she kept staring at us … mostly at Amie. Finally, she asked, “Where ya’ll from?”

Pointe Shoes, Chapter 3

"You're up early," Mauve said as she walked to me on the pier over looking the Gulf.

"Just thinking," I whispered as I held my knees tight to my chest.

"About what, mi amiga?" she asked.

"About school next year," I answered. "I'm a little scared about it."

"Can't blame you," Mauve answered. "Thinking about backing out of it?"

I stood up and skipped a rock into the ocean. Backing out, yeah, there were times when I thought about that option.

My alarm woke me up, much as every morning. I dragged out of bed and headed to the shower, to start another day. I enjoyed my morning shower, it allowed me to tune my voice for the coming day and put on the body lotions I liked. I didn’t like the negative thoughts that seemed to go with it though, but they had always been with me, so I mostly ignored them. Still, it is disconcerting to hear yourself say “I’m so tired of being a girl.” especially when it is not true.
