Once I felt normal again, I climbed out of the water and went to lunch, still feeling mentally drained from the overexertion of my mana. I settled into my usual seat beside Gwen, who greeted me with a warm smile.

Mum appeared in my room about ten o’clock with the perfect cup of tea, which almost made up for only seven hours sleep.

It had been three weeks since the debacle at the Paediatric hospital. As expected, that story ran for as long as the media outlets could justify it. There were so many pictures of me in tears floating around the official channels and even more online.

When I realized most people weren't treating my behavior as something awful, I was eventually able to stop worrying so much about it.

Chapter Ten - Keepers

Layers unfold as the Book advances chapters, and intervals beyond time nevertheless speed forward.

Past further iterations of Light’s expansion, past concept of boundary enforced by the one called to such purpose, past moment of blood and sacrifice, of pain and birth.

It had been an ordinary day up to this point. I was on my lunch break eating a sandwich at a park picnic table. I wouldn’t call the area I was in secluded. You could faintly hear the busy street less than a hundred yards away. To see the street, you would have to crane your neck and look through a bunch of bushes and trees to see it. I usually chose this bench because it was furthest away from the row of restaurants not far from the park entrance. Most people who ate lunch in the park would find somewhere closer to the middle of the park to eat.

Later that evening, Akari returned to her dorm room, where Lila, the adventurous bookworm, and Mira, the studious organizer, were lounging after their classes. The room was filled with a relaxed atmosphere—Lila was sprawled out on her bed, flipping through a book, while Mira was carefully organizing some scrolls on her desk.

As soon as Akari walked in, Lila looked up, her usual grin spreading across her face. “Hey, there’s the fire queen! How was the rest of your day?”

Chapter Nine - Instincts

It had been less than a sleep’s turn since I’d arrived in Hell, and already I’d witnessed three murders. Four, if including Pierre’s self-sacrificing suicide. Technically they were already dead to begin with, but once reduced to a compact stone that was it for their spirits. From everything I’d been told, that was the last one-way trip a soul could take.

Short of jumping into the Abyss, anyway.

"Miss Beaumont, we're so happy to have you on the show" Annie had continued after a brief pause, "Thank you for taking the time. As you can expect, all of Lenoria has been eager to know more about the young woman who has captured our Prince's heart"

"Oh please, you can call me 'Amelia'" I replied, "And I assure you, the feeling is very much mutual. I am very eager to learn more about the beautiful people of this country"

Chapter Eight - Knives

We rode for at least a couple hours if not more. At the speeds the trucks could reach, the wind’s whipping past in all the tunnels made further conversation with the guy next to me impossible - though before we’d pulled out he’d introduced himself as Santiago.

I’d told him to call me Jane, and neither of us were rude enough to point out that we’d obviously given aliases.

The following day, I brought my dad to school, hoping to finally get some clarity on what I was. Together, we walked up to Principal Elara's office, my heart pounding with a mix of nerves and anticipation. When I knocked on the closed door, the Principal's voice called us in, and I led the way.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the spires of Gale Haven Academy when Akari woke up on her first day of classes. Despite the early hour, her roommates, Lila and Mira, were already up and moving, chattering excitedly about what the day would bring.

“First day of school at Gale Haven!” Lila practically sang as she flung open the curtains, letting the morning light stream into their room. “This is going to be awesome!”

Chapter 9

I took the shoes from her and sat next to her on the bed. There was a box of wet wipes on the bedside cabinet. I took a few and started cleaning off the gore, taking extra care around the sharp edges and points.

I’d about finished when a quiet but distinct tick sounded against the window. I opened it and reflexively caught the two heel sheaths that came flying through the gap.

“Thanks,” I said quietly. He’d already demonstrated how good his hearing was.

I listen to the track by Queen – but I don’t hear their words. I misheard it as 'I want to be Three'. Part of me did want to go back to being three. When my mummy loved me. Was that where this began?
