We spent an hour or so with the others, Inspector Weir excusing himself after a few minutes, and I was pleased to see the mood lifting as the biscuits, and a couple of plates of muffins, vanished. Three older men chatted comfortably to one side while the Elliott family gradually moved from Stevie’s slow boil to Jon’s star-struck questions about a retired footballer. I ended up chatting to Stevie’s son, who seemed remarkably grounded.

He grinned at me when I commented on his calm, and after a wave at his dad’s chest, pointed out that being adaptable was a bit of a necessity.

I made a fuss when a nurse told me I had to be taken to the clinic's front doors in a wheelchair, claiming it was the "rules".

I look good, I look really good and I help the others do things as does Shy and by the time we’re all done we all look really, really good and we’re all charged up to go out.

Some of us packed bags and I definitely did with one of my hockey jersies wrapped around thick socks and some black leggings and two extra pairs of panties all for later and for just in case.

The cabs we called all come and pick us up and drive into town.

Saturday had been a crazy day. We’d followed Larry and Kelly to Muncie Indiana to meet Kelly’s family. We met them alright, Mr. O’Brian and I had gotten into, for the lack of better words, a discussion. And I’d finished up by calling him a bigot. We’d left the house followed quickly by Kelly and Larry. Then we’d checked into a local motel and ended up sharing a room.

We’d been given the cooks tour of Muncie by Kelly. The last place we stopped was the church where Kelly and Larry were to be married. We had a nice talk with the priest. Then we found Mrs. O’Brian at the motel when we got back, and we discussed what had happened at lunch.

Then we went star gazing, Did the shooting star that Amy saw mean something?

Jon and I took more than five hours to get to Carlisle, the journey including a change at Crewe. I had heard that name so many times, including in music-hall songs, and I was expecting something a little better than what we found. A mix of old train carriages sparked some interest as we came in, but the reality was simply a large warehouse affair with a lot of glass in the upper parts. It was well-kept, the correct spot to wait for our reserved places was marked on the platform and there were places to grab a snack, but we had to wait over thirty minutes before our connection, and it dragged. There were a large number of bricks in the wall the other side of the tracks, and I am sure I counted them all.

My uncle thought that the tree it came from was a Colorado Pinyon Pine. We had also met with the attorney, Cathy Edwards, that we’d met in New Mexico and spoke with her about setting up the scholarship.

Today, being Tuesday, I had an early morning appointment with Helen Taylor, the hairdresser that works at the department store where my mom works. And I had to face the wrath of Helen about my black hair.
