This is the original script I wrote back in 2001 with its original title. I shortened it to FLAW and then switched the title when my publisher thought the term “feel” would be considered hurtful.

Apparently, they never heard the song by Shania Twain.

Anyway, I was okay with the change and, after reading this, you may be too as there’s a bit more of a grim tone to this story and a particular scene that made me question Jennifer’s drive (and mental stability. I mean, her drive was there and I applaud it but I had a hard time thinking that a doctor—and her parents—would not have her committed)

So, this is the second to the first screenplays I tried to write.

The reworked story is now a book: “To Be a Different Someone” on Amazon.
It is on the BCTS site, in bi-chapter parts

FADE IN
EXT. SCHOOL--AFTERNOON
A three-story high school on an expansive campus. Swarms of cars sit in the parking lot.
Block lettering on the front reads FERRIS HIGH SCHOOL. EXT. SCHOOL-CONTINUOUS
A painted sign near the door says: "Spring Break"
Another one reads "Ferris High School Seniors: Class of 1999 ROCKS!!"
A BELL rings.
Three GUYS stand next to the door as other students file out: CHRIS Michaels, fifteen, tall and lanky.
TYLER Bennett, fifteen, tall but rather heavyset stands at the side; watching students go by.

MATT Tracker, sixteen--the guy reeks of charisma and there's an "Eddie Haskell" streak to him.
Matt sticks his foot out as:
JAMES KANE--fourteen, a bishoujen look to his small frame-- steps out of the building.
Matt sticks his foot out and James stumbles to the ground.
CHRIS
Watch where you're going.
Students part through-seemingly oblivious to James' plight.
MATT (OS)
He got through till spring break. (to James)
Didn't you, pussy?
TYLER
And he hasn't been thrown into the crapper this year.

MATT
Yeah, you lucked out, didn't you James?
James stands up and stares away from them.
MATT (CONT'D)
So, what are you going to do for your week? Sit and masturbate your pathetic life away?
James stands stoic.

MATT (CONT'D)
Wow, you're pretty trained. Chris, don't we do good work?
CHRIS
Outstanding.
Tyler kicks James in the rear. James stands his ground.
MATT
Oh, so we're sticking up for ourselves now, are we?

Matt grabs James by the neck and then shoves him to the ground.

MATT (CONT'D)
We're going to make up for lost time.
James looks up with a terrified expression on his face.
MATT (CONT'D)
C'mon, Kane.
James looks to the ground.
CRYSTAL (OS)
Let him go!
Everyone turns to see CRYSTAL Laberdee (fourteen, blond hair, petite and very nice on the eyes)

and LINDSEY Nichols (thirteen, brown hair, young, naive and bubbly); both wear cheerleader uniforms and letter jackets.
Matt drops James to the ground.

MATT
(To James)
You're so lucky your cousin’s stacked.

CRYSTAL
Shove it, Matt!
She walks over to James and helps him up. Lindsey takes his backpack for him.
Crystal flips Matt off from behind her back as they walk away.
Matt grins as the girls and James walk away.
MATT
See you pussy!
TYLER
(whisper)
You talking to Crystal or James?
Matt laughs, Tyler and Chris join in.
CRYSTAL
(to James) You okay?
James nods.

LINDSEY
They're always acting like jerks. Pushing people around.
Crystal motions for James' backpack.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
Oh, sure. Here. Are you okay, James?
He nods as a car pulls up to the sidewalk.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
Ride's here. Off to Seattle.
CRYSTAL
Have a good trip, see you in a week.
She gets in the car.

LINDSEY
K. Bye, James!
James waves to her but lowers his head again. The car drives away.
CRYSTAL
(to James)
You're fortunate. I think any guy in this school would love to have a cheerleader support group.
He nods as they walk.
EXT. JAMES' HOUSE--CONTINUOS
They stop in front of a large two-story house with a new truck parked in the driveway.
Crystal looks at the truck and then at James.
James stares at his distorted reflection in the truck's glossy finish.

CRYSTAL
Just remember-
James faces her--his face crestfallen.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Things will be different one day.

INT. HOUSE
James stops and looks at the mess of boxes sitting in front of the doorway.

He looks up the staircase to see his father BRYAN KANE (forties, angry) storm down the steps.
James moves away from the landing and into the living room. Bryan picks up a box.
BRYAN
Open the door.
Bryan slams a box on the ground and opens the door himself before his son takes a step.

BRYAN (CONT'D)
Never mind. Tell your mother I'll be back later for the house!
James climbs the staircase as Bryan slams the front door. INT. JAMES' ROOM--LATER
Sparsely decorated; except for a far wall with multiple pictures of female models in various poses and fashions.
He sits at a desk and draws on a sketchpad.
An assortment of color pencils and pens lie on the side of the desk.
LIGHT MUSIC plays on a stereo behind him.
The sketchbook shows a short navy dress, bow and blouse-a traditional Japanese schoolgirl uniform design. ( ala "sailor suit")

He puts one pencil down and picks up another; his pen traces the pleat lines of the skirt.
RACHEL OS
James? The door opens.
James' mother, RACHEL Kane (thirties) walks in. She carries a beaten look and caring eyes.
RACHEL
Your father came by, I see.
James nods.

RACHEL (CONT'D)
Did he say anything?
James closes his eyes and shakes his head slowly. She walks over to his book and looks at it.
RACHEL (CONT'D)
I'm sorry this is happening, James, I- I wish you hadn't had to find out like that--
James nods.

Rachel looks at the design again and then at James' lost expression.

RACHEL (CONT'D)
Nothing's going to change, James. Everything will be alright. Your father just-I--
He nods as she runs her hands next to the design.
RACHEL (CONT'D)
That's very nice. Has Crystal seen it?
James shakes his head.
RACHEL (CONT'D)
Well, are you hungry?
James shakes his head again.
RACHEL (CONT'D)
Are you sure? How about pizza?
He picks up a red pencil and continues his design.
Rachel looks at him for a few seconds and then leaves the room.

JAMES VO
Everyone keeps telling me that things won't change, but everything has.
EXT. CITY PARK-AFTERNOON [THE NEXT DAY]
Crystal and James sit on a bench.
CRYSTAL
James, you can't blame yourself for your dad, he--
He looks up at her.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I'm sorry, I--
James walks to the playground equipment.
JAMES
It's not your fault, it's not anybody's. Except mine, I guess.

Crystal follows.
James lifts himself up and flips over a horizontal bar.
CRYSTAL
What's that supposed to mean?
James looks back at her, she appears upside down. INT. CRYSTAL'S ROOM-MINTUES LATER
A standard fourteen-year-old’s room with boy-band posters.
V.C. Andrews books and fluffy knick-knacks line a bookshelf.
James sits on the floor and moves his hands across a bass guitar, he slowly slaps the strings.
Crystal walks over and turns the amplifier on.
JAMES
I don't know. Nothing I guess.
James strums a bad chord.
CRYSTAL
I think. I think you need to get out and do more, you know?
JAMES
I'd rather not.
He lays the guitar down and stands up.
CRYSTAL
Maybe you can join the cheerleader squad in the fall?
James stares at Crystal in the mirror.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
We could use someone to help with our stunt work...and perhaps new uniforms, maybe?
JAMES
I don't know.
Crystal stands up and claps her hands.
CRYSTAL
You help me practice these cheers all the time;

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
you know them as well as I do...it'll get you away from Matt and his idiots.
JAMES
Crystal, I-
She grabs his hands.

CRYSTAL
Come on crowd, come have some fun. Ferris-Saxons, number one.
JAMES
Move that ball, push it more.
CRYSTAL

JAMES

Come on team, raise the score.
CRYSTAL

Come on team, raise the score.

What do you say. And, there's always Lindsey.

JAMES
Would they really want me?
CRYSTAL
I can persuade to start you off as a mascot at first, but eventually a uniform, letter and all.

JAMES
I don't know, Crys. I--
LYDIA OS
Crystal!
CRYSTAL
Be right back. Hey- James looks up to her.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Everything will be cool.
She pats him on the shoulder.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Nothing bad's gonna happen.

EXT. JAMES' HOUSE-A FEW DAYS LATER
Rain falls.
A SOLD sign sits on the front lawn of the house.
Rachel stands next to an SUV and continues to look at the house.

RACHEL
I didn't want this to happen.
James sits in the front passenger seat looks as the house as well.
Rachel glares at the sign. James lowers his head.
Rachel climbs in and starts the engine. INT. CRYSTAL'S ROOM
Crystal stares out the window as she sees the car back out of the driveway across the street. She cries as she looks on the bed behind her: at an outfit that matches what was made in James' sketchbook days earlier.
A card on the blouse says "I'll see you again someday."
LYDIA OS
I know mom, I know.I-I'm sorry it happened too.
INT. HALLWAY
LYDIA LABERDEE (40's) stands in the hallway with a cordless phone. She looks like her sister, Rachel.
LYDIA
They just left. They should be there in a few hours.

She rests her hand on the wall and looks at a picture of the extended family: Bryan, Rachel, James, herself, Ryan and Crystal.

LYDIA (CONT'D)
I know, he took the house right from under them and--.
She moves downstairs and into another room.

INT. DEN
RYAN LABERDEE(40's)-a businessman-type of father figure-- types on a laptop.

LYDIA
Ryan tried to talk him.but. The man is just as stubborn as a jackass--
RYAN
--and unforgiving as hell.
Lydia nods.
She looks at an old picture of Crystal and James-little kids wearing matching clothes.
LYDIA
Have Rachel call me when they get there. Love you too. Bye.
EXT. INTERSTATE-MIDDAY
The rain continues to fall.
Rachel's SUV drives past a sign: "NOW ENTERING MONTANA" INT. SUV
James looks at the reflections of the mountains passing by. He then looks at a YEARBOOK in his lap.
He turns to a page showing Matt, Tyler and Chris standing together in a mock "badboy" pose.

The caption below the picture: "The Power has returned to Ferris High School"
James stares at the picture of Matt.
RACHEL
A few more miles, James and a new life for the both of us.
James nods as he looks out the car window.
JAMES
(whispered) New life.

EXT. CRYSTAL'S HOUSE-MORNING
[NOTE: Eighteen months have passed]
Crystal, (16) steps out of her house. She has grown up but still possesses a petite figure.

She wears the school uniform James designed and a letter jacket adorned with the number "02".
Multiple cheerleader pins encircle the number.
Crystal hoists her backpack on her shoulders and looks across the street.
James' old house stands as a vacant lot. EXT. HIGH SCHOOL--MORNING
Cars and students crowd around the school.
A marquee reads: Saxons vs. University FRI. 7PM
Crystal nods at the sign as she walks to the front door.
MATT (18) stands next to TYLER (18) and CHRIS (18)-almost in the same positions as two years before. The three look similar to their younger selves as well.
MATT
Crystal.
CRYSTAL
Matt.
MATT
How are you?
CRYSTAL
I'm busy this Friday, and so are you.

MATT
I think we could find the time--
She scoffs at him and walks into the building. INT. SCHOOL
CRYSTAL
(whisper) Sexist asshole.

LINDSEY MARKS (15)--wearing a cheerleader uniform--walks up to Crystal. Lindsey is still upbeat and bubbly.
LINDSEY
So, is he coming back?
Crystal smiles and nods.
CRYSTAL
Yes, he is.
Crystal waves to people as they pass by.
LINDSEY
When?
CRYSTAL
This afternoon, according to his letter, I-
Crystal hands Lindsey the note.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
A year and half of not hearing from him except a birthday card and no--
LINDSEY
It'll be good to see him again, I-

They stop.

CRYSTAL
Oh yeah, wait. You said you wanted this--

Crystal puts her backpack down and takes out a picture of James, slightly older-but still young looking.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Here
Lindsey studies the picture and then looks to Crystal she attempts to keep a nonchalant expression.
Crystal grins back at her.
LINDSEY
I wanted to call him, I really did, Crystal.but I-

CRYSTAL
I asked him to help redesign our uniforms.maybe he'll still do it, I-
-

LINDSEY
Really?
CRYSTAL
I haven't been able to talk to him for so long but I know he'd want to.and we still need another person.
A BELL goes off.

LINDSEY
I can't wait to see him.I kind of wish he would've called me.
CRYSTAL
Yeah. I think he still has something for you.
LINDSEY
Really?! I mean.well, okay.
Crystal laughs as they run to class. EXT. SCHOOL--CONTINUOUS
A red-haired girl-JENNIFER (16)--looks up at the school building and then at the door.

Jennifer wears a short, blue pleated skirt; bow and a white blouse-the same as Crystal.
She walks to the front door.
Matt stands on the side of wall-he barely sees her through the swell of students in the way.
INT. OFFICE
An older woman clicks a pen a few times as she stares at Jennifer.
A desk nameplate to the side of her reads "BEVERLY MARTIN".
BEVERLY
New student?

Yes.

JENNIFER
(Welsh-like accent)

Beverly looks at the uniform Jennifer wears and then hands a stack of papers over the counter.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I should already be registered.
BEVERLY
Do you have your ID with you?
Jennifer lays her license on the counter.
Beverly studies the Montana state driver's license.
BEVERLY (CONT'D)
Be right back.
Jennifer nods as she walks to the side of the office and looks down the halls.
BEVERLY (CONT'D)
Umm, yes, Jennifer?
She turns back.

BEVERLY (CONT'D)
You'll need to go and see Mrs. Cole. She's in room 204. Down the hall.
Jennifer nods and walks to the door.
She passes Chris at the door; he glances at her. INT. BIOLOGY LAB
Crystal looks up to Lindsey as they work on a lab-a dissection tray and notebooks sit in front of them.
LINDSEY
I'm thinking about getting him something.but, I don't know what, I-What does he like?
CRYSTAL
Ummm, I know he likes flowers. He used to dry them out, for some reason or other, I--

LINDSEY
Guys like flowers?
CRYSTAL
Well, yeah.guys like flowers; it shows romance both ways if you give each other a rose-perhaps even a dozen-to show you care.
Matt and Chris sit at a lab counter behind them.
MATT
Is that a hint?
Crystal rolls her eyes and does not turn to him.
CRYSTAL
Not to you, Matt.
CHRIS
So who are you getting flowers for?
CRYSTAL
For my cousin.
Matt attempts to hold a straight face.
MATT
Has time been kind to the pussywillow?
Chris lowers his head and rolls his eyes.
CRYSTAL
Screw you, Matt.
The TEACHER walks into the classroom and claps his hands for order.
Jennifer walks by the open door.
Chris notices her and slaps Matt to look-but he's too late. Matt shoves him in return.
TEACHER
I sincerely hope we left Kindergarten back a long time ago, Mr. Tracker?
Crystal catches a brief glimpse of the uniform and bow. A bell rings

EXT. HALLWAY-MINUTES LATER
Crystal stands in the middle of the crowded hall. She sees various white shirts, and blue dresses but not one that matches hers.
INT. ARTS BUILDING
Crystal looks across the main hallway and sees Jennifer at the other end.

CRYSTAL
Hey. Hey, you!
She runs down the hall and slams into Matt.
Matt looks at her eyes but Crystal looks over Matt's shoulder and huffs in frustration.
MATT
What?
EXT. SCHOOL-AFTERNOON
Crystal stands near the building as Lindsey runs up to her.
CRYSTAL
Anything?
LINDSEY
He didn't check in.at least they wouldn't tell me in the office if he did.

CRYSTAL
Where is he?
LINDSEY
Maybe he's waiting for you at your house?

CRYSTAL
Maybe.I.
LINDSEY
Why don't you go and see, the others know what's going on.
CRYSTAL
Thanks, Lin.
LINDSEY
See you at practice. Bring him too.

EXT. PARK--AFTERNOON
Crystal walks to playground equipment with a half dozen of auburn roses-hybrid flowers.
She glances at her watch and then to the fence.
Jennifer--still wearing the same uniform--leans on the fence nearby and looks into the distance.
CRYSTAL
Hello.
Jennifer turns around.
Both girls make eye contact for a second and then look at each other's clothes.
JENNIFER
Hello.
CRYSTAL
Do you go to Ferris?
JENNIFER
Yes, starting today.
She extends her hand out to Crystal and waves.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
Jennifer.
Crystal looks at Jennifer more and more.
CRYSTAL
Crystal. I thought I saw you in the hallway. Nice outfit, by the way.
JENNIFER
Thank you. Lovely flowers.
CRYSTAL
Oh, yeah. My..my cousin, he's coming back, and I-
JENNIFER
Sweet gesture.
CRYSTAL
Thank you, I haven't seen him for a while and-and I wondered if he's changed any.

Jennifer walks toward the fence and looks down the block.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Where are you from?
JENNIFER
Montana.
CRYSTAL
Oh, I just thought--the accent and everything.
Crystal looks at the uniform and then to her watch. Jennifer walks to the swing sets.
She runs her fingers down the chain and closes her eyes for a moment, her back to Crystal.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I thought I'd meet him here.since we used to talk here.I'm sorry, I don't know why I'm telling you these things, I--
JENNIFER
It's okay.
Crystal walks to the edge of the park but stops and looks back to Jennifer.

Jennifer stands against the fence and looks into the distance.

CRYSTAL
You're from Montana?
JENNIFER

Yes.

Missuola?
Jennifer nods.

CRYSTAL

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)

Do you know someone named James Kane?

JENNIFER
Why, is he your cousin?

CRYSTAL
Yes, he is.
Jennifer shakes her head.
JENNIFER
I've never met him before.
Crystal turns and notes the bow on Jennifer's uniform is longer than her own.

CRYSTAL
I guess I'll see you at school.
JENNIFER
Sure.
Crystal walks out of the park and stops.
CRYSTAL
There's no possible way.unless-
She runs back to Jennifer.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Where is he?
JENNIFER
Who?
CRYSTAL
James Kane.you obviously know him. This design is an original.and-
JENNIFER
Are you sure?
CRYSTAL
Are you his girlfriend?
JENNIFER
No.
Crystal looks down the block and then back to Jennifer.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
It was nice meeting you, I have to go.
Jennifer walks away.
Crystal stares at the dress, bow and shirt and her eyes widen.

James?

CRYSTAL

INT. CRYSTAL'S ROOM--LATER
Crystal locks the door and moves to the middle of her room. Jennifer stands to the side of a computer desk.
CRYSTAL
Is that you?
Jennifer nods.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
But I got a Birthday card from you last month with a picture and-
Jennifer pulls her hair back and moves her head to the side.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
And you dyed it too?
JENNIFER
Red accents, actually.
CRYSTAL
Your voice?
JENNIFER
Bottled and trained.
Crystal studies her for a moment.
CRYSTAL
Nice figure.
JENNIFER
Thank you.I'm going through Hell to keep it though.
CRYSTAL
Well, you fooled me, I--
Crystal turns away and looks at Jennifer through the mirror on the far wall.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
When did you do all of this?

JENNIFER
After we moved to Montana.I thought of starting a new life.Something different.
Crystal walks over and sits on her bed.
CRYSTAL
Well, this is different.Are you.?
JENNIFER
Am I what?
CRYSTAL
Do you still have-
JENNIFER

No.
Crystal blinks.

Ouch.

CRYSTAL JENNIFER

Not really.
CRYSTAL
Ohmigod.
She covers her mouth as she walks over to a black and white picture of James and her standing next to each other.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I can't believe this, I--
Crystal holds her hands up to her cheeks.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I don't know whether to scream or cry.
Jennifer nods as she walks over to the window. A knock at the door interrupts them.
Lydia walks in.

LYDIA
Crystal, I-Hello.
Lydia looks at the matching outfits on the girls.

LYDIA (CONT'D)
Those are wonderful dresses, very cute.

CRYSTAL
Mom, this is Jennifer.
LYDIA

Hello. Hello.

JENNIFER LYDIA

(to Crystal)
Has James come by? Is that his car out front?

CRYSTAL
Umm, I-
JENNIFER
It's mine, I-
LYDIA
No problem, dear. We're just waiting for someone to arrive and-- Rachel said he should have been here by now, he-
The doorbell rings

LYDIA (CONT'D)
That may be him or Rachel. Nice to meet you, Jennifer.
Jennifer smiles as Lydia leaves the room. Crystal closes the door.
CRYSTAL
She didn't recognize you, she-- Whatever made you do.this?
Jennifer stands up and walks to a mirror.
JENNIFER
I didn't want to be flawed.
CRYSTAL
Flawed?

JENNIFER
I wasn't who I wanted to be.
Crystal stares into the mirror at Jennifer
CRYSTAL
So.you use the women's room, right?
JENNIFER
For the past seven months.
Crystal continues to look puzzled.
CRYSTAL
Jennifer Kane, eh?
JENNIFER
Yes.
CRYSTAL
I still don't know what to think.
JENNIFER
I didn't think you would.
CRYSTAL
So, you registered for school today?
Jennifer nods.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
As Jennifer?
JENNIFER
Yes
CRYSTAL
And no one noticed?
Jennifer picks up Crystal's megaphone.
JENNIFER
Did anyone ever notice me before?
CRYSTAL
Well, they're bound to notice the new you.

Mmm-hmm.

JENNIFER

CRYSTAL
You know, we still have that opening in the Varsity Cheerleading squad-we lost someone to pregnancy. How about it?
Jennifer shakes her head.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Come on, you know you want to do it. You're the new girl at a school, you have an
accent.you're-God, you're drop dead beautiful.

I,--

Crystal!

JENNIFER LYDIA (OS)

Crystal gets up and walks out of the room. INT. FRONT ROOM
Rachel stands at the door and holds her hands out to Crystal.
CRYSTAL
Hello, Aunt Rachel.

They hug.

RACHEL
It's so good to see you.and you've grown so much, you--
LYDIA
(to Rachel) Where's James?
RACHEL
We need to talk about that, Lyd.
LYDIA

What?
Jennifer walks down the staircase and brushes her hair back. Lydia looks at Jennifer and then at Crystal.
JENNIFER
Hello, Aunt Lydia.

Lydia stares at Jennifer and then back to Rachel. She then turns to Crystal.
Lydia continues to stare as Jennifer walks down the stairs. Crystal walks up the stairs and stands next to Jennifer.
LYDIA
One of James' designs.and-
Jennifer turns to her side as she walks down the stairs. Lydia reaches out and touches her hair.
LYDIA (CONT'D)
James?
Rachel takes Lydia's hand as she continues to look back Crystal and Jennifer.
INT. JAMES' ROOM

[FLASHBACK]
James (14) stands in his sparsely furnished room.
LYDIA VO
And you just let him do it?
Blood runs down his leg as he walks out of the room with a tied plastic bag in his hand.
RACHEL VO
He made his decision.
INT. KITCHEN-CONTINUOS
A heavy trail of blood follows as he walks in.
James opens up a trash compactor and throws the bag into it.
LYDIA VO
He's only sixteen, Rachel.how could you-
He turns the compactor on.
RACHEL VO
He was fourteen when this all began, Lyd.by the time I found out it was too late to do anything, I--

INT. LIVING ROOM
Rachel stands over James, who lies on the blood-stained floor.
She yells into a phone.
LYDIA VO
Why did he--?
RACHEL VO
I don't know.
INT. PSYCIATRISTS OFFICE
James sits in front of a PSYCHIATRIST, whose face is not seen.

LYDIA VO
Why.why would he do that?
RACHEL VO
You don't want to know how many psychologists asked him the same question.
[FLASHBACK ENDS] INT. KITCHEN
Lydia shakes her head as she walks to the sink.
LYDIA
Rachel, Rachel, Rachel.did the divorce, the fighting--
RACHEL
I don't know, Lyd.I used to think that if I had just let him stay here with Crystal then.then maybe this wouldn't have happened, but.
Lydia shakes her head.
RACHEL (CONT'D)
I-I don't think that there was anyway of preventing this.James won't tell me the reason why he did it.and now I have a daughter.
LYDIA
Does Bryan know?

RACHEL
No, and I'm not going to tell him.she'll have to tell him when she's ready.
INT. JENNIFER'S ROOM-LATE NIGHT
A suitcase lies on the floor of a sparsely decorated room. A few boxes sit next to the wall.
Jennifer lies asleep in a bed.
A barrage of medication sits on a nightstand along with a contact lens case.
Crystal looks in and sees the pills on the stand.
RACHEL OS
I'm just glad she's still alive.
Crystal nods and then closes the door. EXT. SCHOOL-MORNING
Crystal steps onto the sidewalk and stops.
Jennifer stands behind her in a dark red outfit that barely shows her mid-rift.
A backpack hangs from her shoulder.
CRYSTAL
Ready for the moment of truth?
JENNIFER
I was here yesterday, Crystal.
CRYSTAL
But today is your official first day.

Yeah.

JENNIFER

Jennifer looks at students around her.
CRYSTAL
Look over there: Remember him?
Crystal points to a freckled GUY as he walks into the building.

JENNIFER
That's Darrin Roberts.he still has freckles everywhere.
Crystal nods as they start walking.
CRYSTAL
How about her?
JENNIFER
Renee Alexander, right?
CRYSTAL
Pregnant at fifteen, had twins.
JENNIFER
Looks like a lot has changed.
Crystal stares at Jennifer.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
What?
Jennifer stops as she sees someone near the door.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
(whisper) Matthew Tracker.
CRYSTAL
Hmm?
Jennifer closes her eyes and opens them again. Chris and Tyler now stand next to Matt.
JENNIFER
I thought he would've dropped out by now.

CRYSTAL OS
Keep wishing.
The guys look in their direction.
CHRIS
That was the girl I saw yesterday-
TYLER
You weren't lying. She's pretty stacked.

CHRIS
I told you.
Crystal and Jennifer walk up the steps to the school. Matt opens the door for them
CRYSTAL
Matt Tracker, have you appointed yourself doorman today?
Matt waves and grins at Jennifer.
MATT

Hello Hello.

JENNIFER MATT

You're new, right?
JENNIFER
Yes.
The two look at each other, however Matt's eyes do not focus on Jennifer's face.

MATT
If you ever need help getting around, just let me know.
JENNIFER
Thank you very much.
Crystal rolls her eyes as she grabs Jennifer's arm.
CRYSTAL
Come on, Jen.
JENNIFER
Bye.
Matt and the others continue to look at her. INT. HALLWAY
Students run down the hallway.
CRYSTAL
What was that about?

JENNIFER
Nothing, I just wanted to see his reaction.

CRYSTAL
His what?
JENNIFER
I know it's not my face he's trying to connect with.
CRYSTAL
I noticed. Did you wear that at school in Montana?
JENNIFER
No.
Lindsey walks up behind them.
LINDSEY
Where's James?
CRYSTAL
He couldn't get in this week, a change of plans I suppose. Oh, Lindsey, this is Jennifer, she's staying with me for a while...I--
Jennifer waves.

LINDSEY
Hi, Jennifer, I'm Lindsey.
CRYSTAL
Jennifer's interested in joining the cheer squad.
LINDSEY
Does she have you involved in everything on the first day?
JENNIFER
Seems like it.
LINDSEY
She does that to people. Oh, I love your accent, Irish?
JENNIFER
No.

LINDSEY
Oh, well, it sounds cool, the sophistication or something.
CRYSTAL
Or something, yeah.
A bell rings.

LINDSEY
See you two later!
Lindsey runs in the opposite direction. Jennifer watches her skip away.

JENNIFER
She hasn't changed.
CRYSTAL
Nope.
The two walk into a classroom. INT. CLASSROOM
Jennifer walks to a desk next to Crystal and sits down. Other students look at her.
A GUY stares. A GIRL scoffs.
Jennifer sees the nameplate on the desk: CAROL MYERS.
JENNIFER
(whisper)
Mrs. Myers still teaches? I thought she'd be dead by now.
CRYSTAL
(whisper)
It hasn't been that long.
MRS. MYERS walks into the room. The woman has "ancient" on her face and has the eyeglasses, afghan and long pants to complete the ensemble.

Mrs. Myers slowly walks to her desk and peers through her crooked glasses at the class.
She spies Jennifer and then looks at a notebook on her desk.

She goes down the roll and sees a post-it note.
MRS. MYERS
Miss Jennifer A. Kane, I presume?
JENNIFER
Yes.
MRS. MYERS
Stand up, Miss Kane.
Jennifer stands, much to the appreciation of the guys in the room.
Teacher and student look at each other.
MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
Are you aware of the dress
code-what is acceptable and what is not--here at Ferris, Miss Kane?
JENNIFER
Not exactly.
MRS. MYERS
That--
She points to Jennifer.
MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
--Is not acceptable.
Jennifer walks back to her desk and picks up her backpack. She unzips it and pulls out a large t-shirt.
She then puts it on over her clothes in the middle of the classroom.
Mrs. Myers taps her feet, annoyed.
Jennifer holds her hands out to the sides-she awaits "approval".

Mrs. Myers takes a book from off a bookshelf and holds it out.

MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
Take your textbook, Miss Kane.
Crystal giggles.

MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
That will be enough, Miss Laberdee.
Crystal snaps to attention as Jennifer takes the book and sits back down.
A boy-DERRICK TYRES--continues to stare at Jennifer.
MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
Mr. Tyres, this is not a fashion show.
Derrick sinks into his seat as the class laughs. Jennifer looks at Mrs. Myers-who glares back at her. EXT. SCHOOL FIELD-MIDDAY
A bell goes off.
Several students stand near the building, some sit at picnic tables.

Crystal, Jennifer and Lindsey walk from one of the school buildings.
Jennifer still wears the long t-shirt.
LINDSEY
Did every teacher tell you to put something else on?
JENNIFER
Everyone except for my Biology teacher.

Mr. Edwards

CRYSTAL

LINDSEY
Mr. Edwards.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)

Of course, I expected that.
She takes the shirt off and nearly loses her top.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
Sorry, not used to doing this.
Lindsey looks around.
CRYSTAL
Besides that, how has your first day been?

JENNIFER
It's okay. I keep running into--
CRYSTAL
Matt? Jennifer nods.
LINDSEY
Do you think he's cute? Crystal once said he was-
Jennifer looks back at Crystal.
CRYSTAL
I said he can be cute, but he's still a jerk.
Jennifer nods.

LINDSEY
Hey, let her make that decision. (to Jennifer)
I don't know, you're probably a bit too much for him.
JENNIFER
Huh?
The three sit down at a table.
LINDSEY
I don't know-Oh, I'm sorry, I'm being me again and not thinking about what I'm saying. I mean, that he might be intimidated by someone strong-willed like you.

Crystal takes a vinyl lunch bag from out of her backpack and sets it down on the table.
Jennifer blankly stares at Lindsey.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
I mean. Oh, God. Okay, I used to really have this crush on this guy but I think I was a bit too wild for him and I like crushed him so much he avoided me. Never mind, too much information.
CRYSTAL
She does that often.

JENNIFER
Does he still go to Ferris?
LINDSEY
Who?
JENNIFER
The guy you had a crush on.
LINDSEY
Crystal's cousin, James.
Jennifer puts her drink down-now intrigued.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
I once told Crystal that I'd go find him and drag him back here.
JENNIFER
Really?
LINDSEY
Yeah, I mean, at times he was, weird, but I knew that something different would come of him.like some kind of butterfly thing and he'd change to this Freddie Prinze Jr. like kind of guy.
JENNIFER
You thought that?
LINDSEY
I liked being around him, yeah.I wish I could've told him much I liked him, before he left and--

Crystal swallows a bite of her sandwich as she looks at Jennifer.

JENNIFER
I'm sure he liked you too. That's the problem with relationships now: no one really knows what to do anymore.no one shows their true feelings to others.
LINDSEY
Did you ever have someone who broke your heart?
Jennifer nods.

Who?!

CRYSTAL

JENNIFER

He was older than me and I thought the world of him. I wanted him to be happy for me, but he left instead, I never got to tell him I loved him or anything.don't think I'll ever get to ever again either.
Crystal and Lindsey stare at Jennifer as she closes her eyes.
LINDSEY
So.what do you think about Matt?
CRYSTAL
Will you lay off Matt?
LINDSEY
Come on, let's hear it.It's obvious that he likes you, because he's always looking for you, right?
JENNIFER
I just met him today, I-
LINDSEY
What do you think of him?
INT. WEIGHT ROOM
Matt lies back on a weight bench as he readies to lift a barbell.

JENNIFER VO
As little I know about him, I can say that he looks pretty strong and athletic.
Chris stands as a spotter.
Tyler picks up weights lying down on the ground. Matt lifts the barbell.
CHRIS
C'mom, c'mon, c'mon.
Matt grunts.

CHRIS (CONT'D)
C'mon, pussy.

Matt starts laughing and he begins to lose control of the weight he is holding.
JENNIFER VO
However, his mind is weak and sophomoric

Chris grabs the barbell as Matt tries to lift it back into place.

What?

CHRIS

MATT

I just remembered.Crystal's cousin, James.

Oh?

CHRIS

JENNIFER VO

I'm sure his friends fall in with him in the true red-blooded American high school male fashion.
TYLER
He's coming back?
MATT
I think so, at least that's what I heard her talking about.
The Matt and Chris change places. Chirs grabs the bar and lifts it up.
TYLER
I can remember that one time we threw him into the crapper.
Chris grins as he brings the bar down and back up.
CHRIS
Oh man, he fucking smelled for days. We're going to have to do that again.

Matt nods.

CHRIS (CONT'D)
(to Matt)
I saw you talking to that new girl earlier.

Tyler racks several weights onto a stand.
TYLER
She's hot, isn't she?
Chris brings the bar back down.
CHRIS
(to Matt)
So, what pussy you going after?
Matt starts laughing.
MATT
I feel the need for foreign kitty. Le-mew.
(lyrical)
Hey ah, come kitty, kitty. Come hey ah, kitty, kitty.
Matt shoves his arm and body in a mock gesture. Chris laughs and drops the bar on his neck.

Oh shit.

MATT (CONT'D)

Oh Shit.

TYLER

EXT. TRACK-MID AFTERNOON
Jennifer runs in a pair of shorts and a shirt that reads FERRIS HS.

She passes by several STUDENTS as she moves to match pace with Tyler and Chris.
A COACH stands on the side of the track with a stopwatch. She watches the new girl as she dashes past.
COACH
Impressive.
Tyler and Chris look behind themselves to see Jennifer gaining. They increase speed.
She smiles and picks up her pace as well-running past them. The two deliberately fall back in order to stay "behind" her. Jennifer shakes her head as she continues to run.

INT. HALLWAY--AFTERNOON
Matt stands a few feet from a classroom door as Jennifer walks out.

MATT
Hello again.
JENNIFER
Hello.
MATT
Jennifer, right?
JENNIFER
Yes.
MATT
Are you an exchange student?
She shakes her head.

MATT (CONT'D)
I mean, the accent and all.
JENNIFER
I'm native, really.
Matt continues to walk with her.
MATT
Heh, well, what do you think of Ferris?

JENNIFER
Quite nice, thank you.
MATT
Are you busy this Friday?
JENNIFER
No, but aren't you?
MATT
Well, the game, yes, but.maybe you'd like to go somewhere afterwards?
Jennifer looks down the hallway and sees Crystal.
JENNIFER
You don't waste time, do you?

MATT
I'm like a magnet; once I get attracted to something, well.
JENNIFER
I'd like that. Thank you.
MATT
All right.
JENNIFER
I have to go. Perhaps I'll see you tomorrow?

You shall.
INT. LOCKER ROOM

MATT

Crystal laces up her shoes as Jennifer folds her shirt. Both girls wear cheerleader uniform shells.
CRYSTAL
Why are you talking to him? You're supposed to, like, not acknowledge his existence at all.
The end of a scar shows below her sports bra.
JENNIFER
I'm just playing around with him.I-
CRYSTAL
Why?
JENNIFER
I know.but do you know how long I've had the memory of those guys throwing me into.into whatever and humiliating me in front of everyone.I know why Lindsey never said anything to me then.because she'd be hooked up with a losing son of a bitch.
CRYSTAL
You're no longer that person though, are you?
JENNIFER
I know, it's just that--

Crystal stands and places her hand on Jennifer's shoulder.
CRYSTAL
Hormones?
JENNIFER
No, raw, physical anger.
CRYSTAL
Enough about Matt.time to concentrate.
They walk to the door-Jennifer stops.
JENNIFER
Can I do really do this?
CRYSTAL
You got to give it a try.
JENNIFER
No, I'm--
Crystal pulls her to the door.
CRYSTAL
C'mon Jen, you can do it.and you'll find the splits to be easy.
EXT. PRACTICE FIELD
The cheerleaders practice on the upper field--away from the football players.
Everyone wears the same uniform.
CRYSTAL
Okay, okay, okay.Everyone, if you haven't already seen her in the halls or heard of her dress code issues, then I'd like to introduce Jennifer.
She waves to the other girls.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
She'll be practicing with us today because I've twisted her arm to get her to do so.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Ready?

Jennifer nods as the girls stand in line.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Lightning crashes, thunders roars!
CHEERLEADERS
Power, Saxons, give em more!
CRYSTAL
Beat the pressure, hold that line!
CHEERLEADERS
Play it Saxons, one more time!

JENNIFER
Let's go Ferris, pass this test!
EXT. LOWER FIELD.

CRYSTAL
Let's go Ferris, pass this test!

CHEERLEADERS VO
There's no place for second best!
The football team goes through a scrimmage game.
Matt stands on the sideline and looks to the upper field.
Tyler sits on the bench and squints in the direction Matt looks in.

TYLER
I take it, you already asked her out?

Yep.

MATT

TYLER

There's a record. She hasn't even been here a day.
A whistle blows.

MATT
Someone like that, you don't get a second chance.

Tyler looks up to the cheerleaders as Jennifer moves along with them.
He nods in agreement as Chris walks over.

TYLER
If you can't get with Crystal.how long have you been trying?
MATT
I kind of gave up on her.
CHRIS
Cause she didn't want to give up to you?

Matt flips Chris off with a quick gesture as he continues to watch the girls.
INT. KITCHEN, CRYSTAL'S HOUSE-EVENING
Lydia sits at the table with Crystal and Jennifer.
All three have empty plates and glasses in front of them.
LYDIA
(to Jennifer)
How was your first day back?
JENNIFER
Different, very different.
Lydia nods as the phone rings.
CRYSTAL
I'll get it.
Crystal walks to the phone and picks it up.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Laberdee residence. (whisper)
Matt?
Jennifer shakes her head and gets up from the table.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
She's not here right now, I-Umm, sure, I'll tell her.
Jennifer walks up the stairs as Crystal hangs up the phone.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
(to Lydia) We'll be right back.

INT. JENNIFER'S ROOM
Jennifer opens a trunk to reveal a small stereo and a large sewing machine.

CRYSTAL
What did you say to him?
JENNIFER
Nothing.
CRYSTAL
Matt Tracker calls here, for you. Why?

JENNIFER
Because he's a horny bastard and thinks he can get some, what do you think?

CRYSTAL
What did you tell him?
JENNIFER
Nothing.does he really need a good reason to call?

Jennifer lifts the ancient sewing machine and carries it over to a desk.

CRYSTAL
Oh God, Lindsey's right-he likes you.
Jennifer looks back at Crystal.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Do you like him or something?
JENNIFER
I'm just pulling his chain.
CRYSTAL
You're pulling something else too you know?
Jennifer plugs the machine in.
JENNIFER
I know, I know.I'm only being friendly with him.

CRYSTAL
But you don't need to-is this like some kind of freaky revenge kind of thing?

No.

JENNIFER

CRYSTAL

Well, you need to ignore him.
JENNIFER
Why?
Jennifer stares back at Crystal.
CRYSTAL
Nevermind. Come on, we have to clean the kitchen.
JENNIFER
You went out with him.didn't you?
CRYSTAL
After you left, we kind of flirted a bit.
Jennifer stares back at Crystal.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
It wasn't like, a full a relationship or anything.just.a
Jennifer puts her hands up.
JENNIFER
I don't really care, Crystal. Like I said, I'm being friendly with him.because I want to. He may annoy me with his "witty" lines, but I'm not going anywhere with it. Okay?
Crystal and Jennifer continue to look at each other.
LYDIA (OS)
This kitchen isn't going to clean itself up, girls.
CRYSTAL
Be right there!
The two leave the room and walk into the hallway.

CRYSTAL OS
I don't suppose you get menstrual cramps, do you?
JENNIFER OS
No, thank God.
EXT. FERRIS HIGH SCHOOL-MORNING
Rain steadily falls. INT. HALLWAY
Jennifer stands next to the window watches the rain. Her face shows a blank expression.
JAMES (OS)
(echoed) No, let me go!
MATT (OS)
(echoed)
Hey Chris, where does useless shit go?

CHRIS (OS)
(echoed)
It goes in here!
The ghostly sounds of a bathroom door slamming a wall. Feet kick against hollow metal.
JAMES (SO)
Let go of-
The voice cuts off by the sound of gurgling, a toilet flush and a crack of thunder.

Jennifer opens her eyes to see lightning flash on her face and Matt at her side.
MATT
Penny for your thoughts?
JENNIFER
Cute.
MATT
I try. Can you swim?

JENNIFER
No, why?
MATT
Well, the rainy season of course. If it's not snowing then you get deluged by a flash flood.
JENNIFER
Ah.
She turns to him, a sad look in her eyes.
MATT
What's wrong?
JENNIFER
Nothing, just watching the rain fall.
He reaches out and takes her hand.
MATT
Do you dance?
JENNIFER
A little.
MATT
Busy for prom?
He lets go of her hand as she turns back to the window.
JENNIFER
When is Prom?
MATT
Five months from now.
She hesitates.

JENNIFER
You're asking me to a dance that isn't for another five months and you've only known me for a day?
MATT
True and you don't know me.the real me. Crystal's probably told you that I'm some arrogant jerk--
Jennifer turns to him.

JENNIFER
I make my own decisions about others, Matt.
MATT
The independent woman?
Jennifer nods as she kisses him on the cheek.
JENNIFER
Quite.
Matt smiles.
MATT
Could you do that, on the other side perhaps?
She pats his cheek.

JENNIFER
We'll see, won't we?
She walks away as Matt turns to the window and sports an idiotic grin.
EXT. HIGH SCHOOL--MIDDAY
Thunder claps again as the rain continues to fall. INT. CLASSROOM
Crystal and Jennifer sit next to each other.
Jennifer sketches a dress design in the corner of her notebook as the teacher continues to talk.
She absently mindedly writes PROM next to the dress. Crystal glances at the picture and then at Jennifer. Her expression becomes worried.
INT. JENNIFER'S BEDROOM-AFTERNOON
The rain continues to fall.
The room lies in darkness except for three candles lying on the floor.
Jennifer sits, continuing to draw.
Crystal reads from a textbook but then looks up.

CRYSTAL
What did you do?
JENNIFER
What do you mean?
A low rumble of thunder.
CRYSTAL
You didn't tell me how you lost.it.
Jennifer puts her pencil down and looks at Crystal.
JENNIFER
Shortly after we moved to Montana.I began to take things to more of an extreme.and so I used the sharpest knife I could find.and I disposed of it.I didn't think right then and there about the extreme blood loss.but.

She nods.

CYRSTAL
You threw it away, everything?

JENNIFER
Surgery altered what was left.and now.well, I have medications to keep from screaming in pain for awhile-amongst other things.
CRYSTAL
Does your dad know about this, at all?

Nope.

JENNIFER

CRYSTAL

Don't you think you should tell him?

JENNIFER
Why? He never cared about me-
Thunder crashes outside. Jennifer continues to sketch. Crystal curls up against the bed.

Sad.

CRYSTAL

Jennifer nods and closes her eyes. EXT. PORCH-NIGHT
Jennifer stands on the porch of the house and stares across the street.

BRYAN (OS)
(voices echo)
The house is mine, Rachel. In my name, my control.
RACHEL (OS)
Bryan, why are you--
She walks off of the porch
BRYAN (OS)
Just shut-up, okay. You have three days to pack everything that's yours and get out.
And crosses the street.
RACHEL (OS)
A proud contender for father of the year for your son.
BRYAN (OS)
A son who's a screw up at everything and has pictures of models in his bedroom; he makes dresses--

RAHCEL (OS)
Bryan, he can--
BRYAN (OS)
My son?! More like a daughter, more like a strange little girl. He's crazy, Rach, he-
Jennifer lowers her head.
JAMES (OS)
(crying) I'm sorry dad.

JENNIFER
(whisper) I'm not.
Lightning flashes in the distance. EXT. FOOTBALL FIELD-NIGHT
Cameras flash as the players line up on the sideline. A marching band plays as announcer call out.
ANNOUNCER (OS)
Welcome to tonight's game of your Ferris Saxons versus the University Wildcats!
The stands on both sides of the field burst with people.
Jennifer stands at attention on the sideline along with Crystal and the rest of the cheerleaders.

The girls spontaneously break into a cheer and rally the crowd as the game gets underway.

The action on the field plays out with Ferris towering over the University High Team.

Jennifer periodically turns to the field and watches Matt play.

She continues to watch until Crystal taps her on the shoulder.

CRYSTAL
Crowd's this way.
JENNIFER
Sorry.
Crystal smiles and begins another cheer.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
C'mon hear-
CHEERLEADERS
--The Saxons call.
The crowd chants and claps along.
CHEEERLEADERS
C'com team, and get that ball.

The game continues.
The scoreboard clock counts down to zero. A horn blows.
ANNOUNCER (OS)
At game's end: Ferris Saxons, 35; University Wildcats, 21.
The cheerleaders yell out. EXT. FIELD HOUSE--LATER
Jennifer-now in jeans and a blouse--stands a few feet away from the door as Matt leaves.
JENNIFER
Good game.
MATT
Thanks.

Chris and Tyler walk out of the field house and see Jennifer and Matt.
The two walk over.

MATT (CONT'D)
Jennifer, this is Tyler and Chris.
JENNIFER
Hello.
Chris waves.
Tyler runs his hand through his hair in mock assurance.
MATT
(to Jennifer) Shall we?

JENNIFER
Lead on.
MATT
Catch you later, Mont, Ty.
The two guys watch Jennifer as she walks away with Matt.
MATT (CONT'D)
You look nice.

Thank you.

JENNIFR

He reaches for her hand and she gives it to him.
MATT
Where are you from again?
JENNIFER
Montana.
MATT
Nice country, so I hear.
Jennifer nods.

MATT (CONT'D)
Were you popular in your old school?

JENNIFER
I suppose.but I don't find myself popular here though.
MATT
Are you kidding? Do you how many guys want to be with you?
JENNIFER
I can take a guess.
MATT
I'm sorry, I didn't mean it that way, I mean-
He lets go of her hand.
MATT (CONT'D)
I'm being an idiot, aren't I?
JENNIFER
You're forgiven.
INT. RESTAURANT
Matt sits in front of a large sandwich and a soda. Jennifer has a bowl of soup and a glass of water.
JENNIFER
I lived in Billings for a while, then to Missoula before I came to live here.

MATT
And you stay with Crystal, right?
JENNIFER
Yeah, we kind of met over the summer.

MATT
I wished she would've mentioned you.but, Crystal doesn't really like me too much.
JENNIFER
Why?
MATT
She didn't tell you?
JENNIFER
Perhaps, but maybe you should tell me yourself.
He takes a drink.

MATT
I'm usually known as either a good guy or an asshole.depending on who you talk to.
Jennifer looks at him as he speaks.
MATT (CONT'D)
Not that I try to be one, I admit that sometimes I am a jerk.isn't everyone?
Jennifer nods.

MATT (CONT'D)
Crystal had this cousin, James. He used to go Ferris and I knew him when he was in junior high. He was kind of weird and-well, some people would've said he was gay or something.

JENNIFER
What did you think about him?
MATT
I didn't. I didn't really care about him in any way, he was just some kid.and--

Jennifer picks up her glass.
JENNIFER
And what would you tell him now?
MATT
I'm not sure, I like to say that I've grown up.but guys never do.
JENNIFER
Grow up or mature?
MATT
You see, that's what I like about you: you put things into the light. You must have had a brother.
JENNIFER
No, girls do stupid things too. Guys just don't usually pay attention when we do.
MATT
Or we think they're cute.
Jennifer nods as a waitress brings the check to the table.
JENNIFER
So, you had no personal feelings about.James?
MATT
Not a one.
Jennifer looks down at the table for a second.
MATT (CONT'D)
I didn't care who he was. He was just there: an easy target.
JENNIFER
I suppose that's an explanation.do you think he'd accept it if you saw him now?

MATT
I don't know.things change. For all I know, he may be seven-foot three and can kick my ass without effort.I wouldn't put it past him and I'd probably let him do it.

MATT (CONT'D)
If I could apologize to him, I would and I'd hope that he would accept it.

JENNIFER
You should tell Crystal that.
MATT
She doesn't want to hear a thing from me.especially considering her cousin.
They look at each other.
MATT (CONT'D)
Are you going for a psychology career or something?
JENNIFER
No, I just thought you'd want to talk.

MATT
Thanks, but I'd like to hear more about you.
She smiles.
EXT. CRYSTAL'S HOUSE
Jennifer and Matt walk up to the front door.
JENNIFER
Thank you, I had a wonderful time.
MATT
Well, you're a wonderful person, and-

JENNIFER
Hmm?
He takes her hand.
MATT
Still want to go to Prom?
JENNIFER
You're serious?
MATT
Yeah.

JENNIFER
And what will we do in the meantime?

MATT
Well, for starters--
He moves closer to her as the front door opens.
Crystal opens the front door as Matt turns to her and the two move apart.

CRYSTAL
Jennifer, you're home.
JENNIFER
(to Matt)
Thank you for the dinner, see you Monday?
He waves to her as Jennifer walks inside. Crystal stares at Matt as he walks backward. She closes the front door.
INT. HOUSE

CRYSTAL
Where did you go?
JENNIFER
Sandwich place, ice cream shop, nothing more.
They start climbing the staircase.
CRYSTAL
What did you talk about? Did he brag about himself?
JENNIFER
No, not at all.Which really surprised me.
CRYSTAL
You want to tell me what happened?
JENNIFER
We talked mostly, about little things.

CRYSTAL
Did you ask him about James?
Jennifer nods.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
What did he say?
JENNIFER
It all made sense.in a way. He didn't think anything about James, except he was there and was an easy target.

CRYSTAL
And you accepted that? He's lying, telling you what he knows you want to hear.

JENNIFER
How would he know if I knew James?
Jennifer opens the door to her room and walks in. INT. BEDROOM
Jennifer's room now reflects the look of a sixteen year-old girl.

She sits down in front of her desk and turns on the light of her sewing machine.
Crystal pulls up a chair.
CRYSTAL
He never took me out any place.we just, well--
Jennifer picks up a bolt of fabric and starts to unwind it.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I want to hear about what you did.did you kiss him?
JENNIFER
No, I'm not going there.I'm not taking this that far.
CRYSTAL
But he might.
Jennifer nods as she begins sewing.

CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
Just be careful.you know what he's capable of doing. He may be trying to use you as you're trying to use him.
She turns to her.

JENNIFER
I will, thank you.
CRYSTAL
I still don't think it's a good idea what you're doing.
JENNIFER
But you still want to know what happened, don't you?
Jennifer flips the presser foot up and then back down again, EXT. PARK--MIDDAY
Jennifer stands next to the fence as Matt walks up behind her. He holds his arm behind his back with a rose.
MATT
Hello.
JENNIFER
What brings you here?
Jennifer sees the flower, but doesn't acknowledge it.
MATT
Crystal used to come here sometimes. I figured she got you into coming here too.

Several kids play and shout on the playground equipment behind them.

JENNIFER
It's very pretty. And you're pretty quick to catch on to people.
MATT
You're welcome, and nothing gets past me.
She turns to him as he extends the flower to her.

Thank you.

JENNIFER

She takes the flower and looks at it as she talks.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
If I didn't know any better, I'd say that our date was incomplete.
MATT
How so?
JENNIFER
You didn't get your kiss.
Matt grins and then looks away, embarrassed. She grabs his arm.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
It's all right.I was going to.just not with an audience watching.
MATT
Well, I was going to ask you if you wanted to do something today?
JENNIFER
I'd love to, but I promised Crystal that I'd help her with a few things, so--
MATT
Oh, well, that's all right. I don't want to come across as someone's who's obsessed or.
She places a finger on his lip.
JENNIFER
Not at all. I'm flattered by it. Thank you. And thank you again for the rose. A gesture from the hopeless romantic who can't speak his heart.

Matt takes her hands and she finds her fingers intertwining with his.
They stares into each others eyes.

MATT
I have never met anyone like you before.

JENNIFER
I-
MATT
You're amazing, you're unreal.I love you.
Jennifer lowers her head and she closes her eyes.
JENNIFER
I think.
She lowers head and touches his shoulder with her head.
He looks at her hair and then slowly moves his hands around her, hugging her.

JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I've never had anyone care for me, I-

What?

MATT

JENNIFER

No one's ever told me that.
MATT
No one?
She shakes her head.
JENNIFER
No, no one that I really cared about ever did.
EXT. STRIP MALL--AFTERNOON
Crystal and Jennifer walk down the front of a strip mall as they leave a fabric store.
Each of them carries a bag full of material. INT. JENNIFER'S ROOM
Crystal wears half of a new uniform with a pair of shorts. Jennifer quickly adjusts settings and continues working.

INT. GYM [Monday Morning}
Crystal steps out of the locker room wearing the new uniform.
The other cheerleaders clap at the style as Crystal twirls around.

Jennifer smiles at Crystal and then at Matt, who stands at the other end of the gym along with other members of the football team.
Jennifer blushes as Crystal notes Matt's stare. EXT. CRYSTAL'S HOUSE--EVENING
Ryan steps out of his car as Lydia walks out of the house.
LYDIA
How was your trip?
RYAN
Hectic.just glad to be back home.

They kiss. INT. KITCHEN
Crystal and Jennifer set the kitchen table for dinner.
RYAN OS
Back to normalcy.
INT. DINING ROOM
Ryan sits at the table along with Lydia, Jennifer and Crystal.
The table has several dishes of food set on it. Ryan picks his fork up as he takes a bite.
RYAN
So, James couldn't make it?
LYDIA
Rachel said he was fine at his school in Missoula.
RYAN
Sorry to hear that, I mean, it's good that things are going well for him. The kid's had a tough life.

He looks at Jennifer as Lydia gets up from her chair.
RYAN (CONT'D)
And you're a friend of Crystal's, umm--

LYDIA
Ryan, this is Jennifer. Her mother had to leave on business and so she's staying with us for a while.
Lydia opens the refrigerator.
RYAN
Are you two in the same grade?
CRYSTAL
Yes, and we have two classes together.
The refrigerator closes and Lydia brings out a cheesecake.
RYAN
Ah.
Jennifer doesn't look at Ryan as he studies her for a moment.
RYAN (CONT'D)
Well, anyone want to hear about New York City?

Hmm?

LYDIA

Lydia sets the cake down and begins to cut it.
RYAN
I was riding in the subway and stood next to a woman.well, I thought she was one but she then said: 'How are you today, sir?' Her voice was an octive too low and she then began to talk to me about her.or his operation.
The others stare at him.
RYAN (CONT'D)
The world is filled with freaks and weirdoes. How do the sane people deal with them?
Crystal swallows hard.

INT. BEDROOM
Jennifer sits in on the side of her bed in a long shirt. She swallows several pills and drinks a cup of water.
Crystal walks in and closes the door.
CRYSTAL
Well, that went well.
JENNIFER
I don't like having to lie to him.
CRYSTAL
Do you want to tell him, right now?
JENNIFER
No. Not after his description of a trip into the underarm of New York.

Jennifer looks back at the mirror and at the cheerleader uniforms in the background.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I'm going to have to tell him.eventually.
EXT. FOOTBALL GAME--EVENING
Ryan and Lydia sit in the stands as Crystal and
Jennifer-along with the other cheerleaders-perform a routine at halftime.
The scoreboard shows 28 to 27 in a favor of Ferris.
RYAN
Have you talked Jennifer's mother.or father about her staying with us?
Lydia shakes her head as she claps for the girls.
RYAN (CONT'D)
I just feel that I need to speak to her parents.
Jennifer looks out to the field as the team comes back out.

RYAN OS
I mean she's well-behaved, helpful, artistic. What kind of parent would throw her out? Does she have some kind of problem that I-
Jennifer searches for Matt.
LYDIA OS
She's just rebelling.
Matt waves back to her.
Crystal shoots a glance at Jennifer and then to Matt.
RYAN OS
Rebelling against what? She's been at our house for over a week or so and she's almost like a member of our family by her demeanor. Do you know something that I don't?
Jennifer finds Matt and waves.
LYDIA
I know you're reading in too deep about this, Ryan.

Ryan nods.

ANNOUCNER VO
And we're back for the second half of the game. Saxons, Twenty-Eight; Highlanders, Twenty-Seven.

EXT. FIELD-CONTINUOUS
Matt stands on the side of the field along with the team. The COACH stands in the middle.
COACH
Let's get out there and put some distance on that score. Go! Go! Go!

The players break with most of them going to the sideline, the others out onto the field.
Matt runs out onto the field with the others.
He looks back at Jennifer and studies her hard, until the ball snaps.
Jennifer returns the expression back to him.

EXT. PARKING LOT-NIGHT
Cars flood out of the parking lot. Ferris students shout out.
Crystal stands next to her parent's car as Jennifer walks alongside Matt.

MATT
See you Monday?
Crystal turns her head to the car and grips the door handle.
JENNIFER OS
Perhaps sooner?
Crystal closes her eyes.
RYAN
Everyone ready?
Matt waves and walks away as Ryan and Lydia come up. Crystal opens the car door and climbs in.
Jennifer gets in on the other side.
Matt and Jennifer look back at each other as the car drives away.

TYLER OS
Oh yes, he's got it bad-
Chris and Tyler-wearing their letter jackets-walk up to Matt.
CHRIS
As if no one couldn't tell.
Matt flips them off.

TYLER
Seriously though, someone's hung up and to think, you were all for Crystal and now her firend.
CHRIS
Tracker: The man with no shame.
MATT
Shut-up.
The three walk to Matt's car.

TYLER
So, when's the wedding?
MATT
What?
CHRIS
Or has wedded bliss already entered in?

MATT
Whatever.
TYLER
Let's see.right now marks the first time in two weeks, two damn weeks that you have not talked about her.
Matt turns to them.

MATT
Say it. You know you want to say it.

CHRIS
Could it be? Could this girl have claimed the heart of the.of the..
TYLER
Yeah, what was it that they all used to call you?
Matt flashes a sarcastic grin.
MATT
Tracker the Attacker.
CHRIS
Bingo. And now, The Attacker had been changed to the pussy-whipped shell we see before us.
TYLER
Of course.if I was with her, I really wouldn't care what people say anymore and-
Matt pegs Tyler on the shoulder a few times.
MATT
Bout time you figured it out, Tyler. Yeah, you're both right.

He opens the door to his car.
MATT (CONT'D)
I mean, there's nothing wrong.I mean, nothing with this girl.
CRHIS
So you have thought about marrying her, right?
MATT
If I could, I would.
Chris and Tyler lean on the door after Matt steps in and closes it.

CHRIS
Flawless, eh?
Matt nods as he turns the engine on.
MATT
I love the girl, there, I said it.
Tyler taps the car.

TYLER
Just remember what sex brings into the relationship, okay?
Matt nods and shoves Tyler and Chris away from the car. He closes the door.
EXT. CRYSTAL'S HOUSE--NIGHT INT. BATHROOM
Jennifer pulls her hair back and secures it with a clip. Crystal walks into the doorway and leans in.
CRYSTAL
Listen, there's something I've noticed about you and Matt.
JENNIFER
What?
CRYSTAL
I don't think you're really playing with him anymore.

Jennifer looks away from her.
JENNIFER
No, you have it all wrong.
CRYSTAL
Do I? Let's see. You stare at him intently. You've gone out with him a few times. You laugh. You tease. and then he brings you a rose.
Jennifer moves her head to the right and looks at her neck.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
You like him.perhaps even more than you want to.

Jennifer shakes her head as she removes the clip and walks out of the bathroom.
Crystal grabs her arm.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
You don't hate him and this is not revenge against him now, it's not a game...maybe it never was.
Jennifer pulls her arm away.
CRSYTAL
You love him.
JENNIFER
No, I don't.
CRYSTAL
Jennifer.
JENNIFER
No, just because you're jealous-
CRYSTAL
Of what?
JENNIFER
You went out with him, and it didn't work and now, you can't stand to see him with someone else, you--

CRYSTAL
Listen to yourself, you said it yourself.and you're setting yourself up for nothing. He doesn't think anything about you.
Jennifer turns to Crystal.
JENNIFER
No, he does love me.he told me.
CRYSTAL
He doesn't love you, he loves Jennifer.

JENNIFER
I "am" Jennifer!
CRYSTAL
No, James, you are a confused freak!

Jennifer slaps Crystal across the face and runs from the room.
Crystal holds her cheek and hears the bathroom door slam. EXT. HIGHWAY-MIDDAY {The next day]
A car drives down the road. INT. CAR
Matt looks to Jennifer, who sits in the passenger's seat.
JENNIFER
Thanks for coming by.
MATT
No problem.I'm glad you called.
JENNIFER
I just needed to get away from things.

MATT
I'll take you anywhere you want to go. You want the moon? I'll give you the moon.
JENNIFER
Can I hold you to that?

MATT
You can hold anything you want on me.
Jennifer smiles and takes his free hand. EXT. PARK-NOON CONTINUOUS
A river runs through the middle.
The park is alive with people walking in the brisk weather of the day.
An indoor carousel sits on the bank to the river. Jennifer and Matt sit on the concrete side of the river.
MATT
Have you ever been here?
JENNIFER
No, but it's very lovely, thank you for bringing me here.
MATT
You're welcome.
Jennifer looks across the river.
MATT (CONT'D)
I have a confession to make to you.
JENNIFER
Hmm?
MATT
I, at first.didn't really know what to think of you, and-well, I didn't put a lot into for a relationship at first but now-
She touches his lip with her finger.
JENNIFER
Do you hear that?
MATT
What?
JENNIFER
That's the true heart of Matthew Tracker.opening up from it's enclosed space.

Matt grins as Jennifer looks at him.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I was waiting to see when it would come out and say hello.
Matt grabs her hand and helps her up.
MATT
You into carousels?
She smiles at him and walks closer to him as they head to the carousel.
INT. CAROUSEL--CONTINUOUS
Both ride separate horses on the outer rim of the carousel. Matt rides behind her.
Matt keeps his gaze locked on Jennifer until a buzzer sounds.
An ATTENDANT loads several rings into a machine and swings it out.

The riders on the outside horses reach out to try and grab a plastic, colored ring.

They then throw it into a clown mouth on the other side of the carosel.
Jennifer reaches up to grab one, but she can't reach.
MATT
Next time around.
JENNIFER
I will.
They go around again, but she misses again. Matt grabs a ring-a solid brass one.
He pockets the ring.
The buzzer goes off again.
EXT. PARK VENDOR STAND--CONTINUOUS
The two sit together as an artist sketches out a picture of the two of them in lithograph.

Matt takes the ring and slides it over Jennifer's finger and then slides it off.
The artist grins at them as she finishes. EXT. PARK FOOTBRIDGE--CONTINUOUS
Jennifer stands with Matt, overlooking the water. She kisses his other cheek as he holds onto her. INT. JENNIFER'S BEDROOM--EVENING
Crystal looks around Jennifer's dresser and picks up a large brass ring. A lithograph of Matt and her lies next to it.
A sewing machine squeaks.
CRYSTAL
What are you making?
JENNIFER
Finishing a design I started a few months ago.

Crystal looks at the design and then picks up the sketchbook and turns it back a few pages.
The outfit is a short blouse and a long light blue dress.
CRYSTAL
I'm sorry about what I said last night.

JENNIFER
You're not the first to call me that.

CRYSTAL
I'm sorry. It's just that I still think about how things were, James and I--
Jennifer stops the machine.
JENNIFER
No one cared for James, Crys.
CRYSTAL
I did.I still do care for you, James.

JENNIFER
I know, Crys. I know.
Jennifer starts the machine up again.
CRYSTAL
Do you remember what Lindsey said? She wasn't lying. She really liked you too.

JENNIFER
He liked her too.
CRYSTAL
Quit speaking like he's dead.
JENNIFER
He is dead.gone away, how many times do I have to say that?

Crystal stammers for a second and slams her hand on the dresser.
The brass ring vibrates with a loud ring.
CRYSTAL
So I see you went to the carousel in Riverfront Park.
JENNIFER
Mmm-hmm.
CRYSTAL
Was it nice?
JENNIFER
Mmm-hmm.
Crystal taps on the dresser and then walks to the door.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
Crystal?
CRYSTAL
Yeah?
JENNIFER
My dad.well, you never saw him much because he was always on business, but-

CRYSTAL
He had another family.

JENNIFER
He had two daughters and another son.and the only way I found out about it was when I saw a picture of one of those girls in one of my dresses. When Mom saw it, the friction picked up and.and he laid it down on us.
CRYSTAL
And the house was sold?
JENNIFER
After we were told that we were nothing.
Jennifer stares down at the fabric in front of her.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I decided I didn't want to be me anymore.and that I couldn't pretend I was someone else.because each time I looked into the mirror.I saw the same pathetic kid looking back at me.

CRYSTAL
But what about Grandma, you were staying with her at the time, right?

JENNIFER
Only for a short while and then the divorce settlement came in.we got our own place.but I was still someone I didn't want to be.
Crystal stares back at her.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I can remember whispering to a paramedic, telling him that one day I would have another last name. I still don't think he understood what I meant.

Jennifer takes the dress out and holds out in front of herself.

JENNIFER (CONT'D)
Crystal.it's never been about Matt, or anything at school.it's all been about me, how I want to look and how I want to feel.
Jennifer puts the dress on and lifts her shirt up.
Her scars show as she takes her shirt off and puts the blouse on.

CRYSTAL
And how do you feel?
JENNIFER
Just as I am, a woman.
Crystal stares at Jennifer as she slowly moves left and right, swaying to an invisible melody.
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY
A bell rings as Matt runs up to Jennifer.
She wears the outfit she created the night before
MATT
Hello, did you have a nice weekend?
JENNIFER
Yes, thank you, I-
MATT
That looks beautiful on you, I--
He takes a box out and hands it to her.
MATT (CONT'D)
I got you something.
He opens the case to reveal two gold and aquamarine earrings.
JENNIFER
I can't take this from you.
MATT
Why not? I bought it for you.
She shakes her head.

JENNIFER
You've only known me for a week, you can't buy me things like this.

MATT
But I want to, I-
Jennifer looks down at the earrings again. Matt picks one of them up and moves Jennifer's hair back.
He moves the earring to her ear.
Jennifer stops his hand for a second but then helps to place the long hook in her lobe.

She turns her ear to him; the gold and crystal reflect in the light.
Jennifer takes the other one and puts it in the other ear. She then spins slowly around.
MATT (CONT'D)
Very nice.
JENNIFER
They're beautiful.
He takes her hand.

MATT
Not as much as you are.
Jennifer drops her books as Matt wraps his arms around her waist.
They kiss a short, yet passionate embrace.
MRS. MYERS
Excuse me?
They break and turn to see Mrs. Myers
MATT
Mrs. Myers, uh--
MRS. MYERS
(to Jennifer) To class, Miss Kane.
Jennifer nods and picks up her books.
MRS. MYERS (CONT'D)
Mr. Tracker, do you have a class "you" should be at right now?

MATT
Umm, yes ma'am.
Matt turns around and starts walking.
He turns back to see Mrs. Myers standing next to the door.
MRS. MYERS
The lovefest is over, Mr. Tracker, class!
INT. CLASSROOM
Jennifer walks in, her face flushed red. Crystal stares at the earrings.
CRYSTAL
(whisper) Matt?
Jennifer nods.
Crystal looks at her and then to her desk. EXT. LUNCH AREA
Crystal sits with Lindsey.
They both watch Jennifer with Matt and the other guys.
LINDSEY
I guess they were right for each other after all.
CRYSTAL
No, it's all wrong.
LINDSEY
Huh?
CRYSTAL
They shouldn't be together.
LINDSEY
Why not? They're like crazy for each other.
CRYSTAL
That's the problem.
Crystal's eyes burn as Matt moves his hand across Jennifer's leg.

Jennifer kisses him on the lips, again.
Crystal drops her lunch and holds her hands over her face.
LINDSEY
What?
Crystal gets up and runs from the scene.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
What?
INT. RESTROOM
Crystal leans against the wall and holds her chest. Lindsey runs in.
LINDSEY
For the love of--What is going on?
CRYSTAL
Matt and Jennifer.
LINDSEY
What? You hate Matt, right.oh you don't want him with your friend, right?

CRYSTAL
I don't want him with Jennifer or anyone really, I-
LINDSEY
You want him?
Crystal looks at Lindsey and shakes her head.
CRYSTAL
No.
LINDSEY
You're not making any sense.just let them be.if you don't want him, I don't want him....I don't know who else and since Jennifer's with him.
Lindsey throws her hands into the air.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
The problem is solved.

CRYSTAL
No, it's not.
Crystal storms out of the restroom. INT. HALLWAY
CRYSTAL
The problem is only getting bigger.
EXT. FIELD-LATE AFTERNOON
Jennifer looks to Matt as he lies next to her. They both lie underneath a motley quilt.
She winces in pain.

I'm sorry.

MATT

He traces one of her scars to the lip of the quilt. Jennifer shakes her head.
JENNIFER
It's okay.
MATT
What happened?
JENNIFER
Surgery.
MATT
Did you get them enhanced or something?

Yes.

JENNIFER

Matt nods as Jennifer looks up at the sky.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I can't think of a more beautiful place.

MATT
I thought you'd like it.
JENNIFER
To be with you.

MATT
I love you.
JENNIFER
I love you too.
He squeezes her arm.
She reaches for his face and kisses him.
He moves over her, guiding a hand down her arm. INT. KITCHEN-EARLY EVENING
Ryan looks across the table as Jennifer and Crystal sit on opposite sides.

RYAN
So, how was your day, Jennifer?
JENNIFER
It was okay, nothing too eventful.
Crystal coughs.

RYAN
Crystal?
CRYSTAL
Uneventful? Not by what I saw.
Lydia looks at Ryan and shrugs her shoulders.
JENNIFER
And what did we see?
CRYSTAL
Besides the earrings in your ears-- which I think are way too expensive-he also gave you tongue today.

LYDIA
Jennifer
CRYSTAL
You were Frenching him in the hallway.

Crystal.

LYDIA

JENNIFER
I kissed him, yes, but you're way off--

CRYSTAL
So are you a virgin still?
LYDIA
Crystal!
JENNIFER
I don't know, are you?
CRYSTAL
Wow, and to think we had one thing in common up until now.
LYDIA
Girls!
Jennifer gets up and runs out of the kitchen. Crystal gets up and slams her chair in.
Two glasses spill.

Hey!

RYAN

Lydia walks to the counter.
RYAN (CONT'D)
What's with them?
The phone rings.

LYDIA
I, I don't-I'll go talk to them.
The phone rings again.
Ryan picks it up as Lydia starts climbing the stairs.
RYAN (OS)
Laberdee residence. Oh, hello, Rachel.
Lydia stops and walks down the stairs.
RYAN (CONT'D)
What do you mean? "Is James okay?"
Lydia steps into the kitchen, her eyes go wide.

RYAN (CONT'D)
What? He's not there with you?
Ryan looks at a picture of James and then at a picture of Jennifer on the wall.
He looks puzzled at it.
RYAN (CONT'D)
Lydia hasn't told me what?
INT. LIVING ROOM--CONTINUOUS
Ryan sits on the couch with his hands over his face. Lydia stands in front of him.
Jennifer and Crystal sit on opposite sides of the room.
RYAN
Please. Explain this to me again.
LYDIA
This is Jennifer.
RYAN

James?

Once.

LYDIA

Ryan looks at Jennifer and then to a picture of James. An uneasy silence permeates.
RYAN
Could I have a moment with.Jennifer, please?
Crystal and Lydia walk out of the room. Ryan looks up at Jennifer.
RYAN (CONT'D)
Do I need to blame this on your father?
Jennifer shakes her head.
RYAN (CONT'D)
I'm led to believe you're a friend of Crystal's but instead you're my nephew.who's now my niece?

JENNIFER
I don't expect you to understand, Uncle Ryan.
RYAN
You're damn right I don't understand. Why?
JENNIFER
Because I did.
RYAN
James.
JENNIFER
I'm not James, I'm Jennifer
RYAN
I don't know who Jennifer is.
She stands up.

Me.

JENNIFER

RYAN

So, why become a new person?
JENNIFER
Maybe I wanted to.
RYAN
I don't understand.
JENNIFER
There's nothing to understand.you don't have to understand anything. I had my reasons.
Ryan looks at her and closes his eyes.
RYAN
What was Crystal talking about?
JENNIFER
I have a boyfriend.
RYAN
A boyfriend?

She nods.

RYAN (CONT'D)
Does he know?
JENNIFER
No, and I'm not going to tell him.
RYAN
You're not going to tell him who you are?

JENNIFER
I am Jennifer.not James.I'm not keeping anything from him.
RYAN
I know you don't believe that.
Jennifer slams her fist against the wall.
JENNIFER
So I tell him, and then he leaves me and maybe the hell I used to go through will come back once again, right?

RYAN
Not exactly.
JENNIFER
A new hell then, ridiculed and picked on for the rest of the year.
RYAN
It may not happen that way.
JENNIFER
I don't care what anyone thinks.I'm not telling him.
She runs out of the room. EXT. HOUSE
Jennifer steps out of the house and meets up with Matt.
MATT
What's going on?
JENNIFER
Nothing. Can we go?
She drags him away from the house.

Ryan stands on the porch and looks at Matt. EXT. PARK-NIGHT
She looks at him and then at the ground.
JENNIFER
I have to tell you something.
Matt puts his arm on her, she takes it off.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
You're probably not going to want to be near me when I tell you.
MATT
What?
JENNIFER
We've met before.
MATT
Really?
Jennifer nods.
He continue to try and put his arm around her.
JENNIFER
No, I-
He finally pulls her close.
MATT
What's wrong? So we met before.although I don't remember you.

JENNIFER
No, you don't remember me.
She pulls away from him.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
You used to torture and humiliate me.and you pretty much helped to make sure that my life was completely miserable.
Matt takes a step back and looks at her.
MATT
What are you talking about?

JENNIFER
I used to be James Kane.
Matt's mouth drops.

MATT
Say what? No, this is some sort of joke, no, you-that's impossible.
We.it's-

JENNIFER
It's called reconstructive surgery, Matt.

James? I was--

MATT JENNIFER
MATT

But now.you're not?
JENNIFER
Do I look like him?
Matt shakes his head as he walks away.
JENNIFER (CONT'D)
I guess I just needed to tell you.
MATT
Afterwards.you tell me afterwards.
JENNIFER
I thought it best if-
MATT
Best if what!
He grabs at his hair and yells out.
He then grabs Jennifer and hits her across the face. She falls to the ground.
Matt spins around-putting his hands to his face. He closes his eyes and cries.
His tears turn to anger as he stands and walks to Jennifer. Jennifer tries to stand.

Matt, I--

JENNIFER

Matt forcibly grabs her and pulls her up.

MATT
James, James Kane? THE James Kane?

She nods.

MATT (CONT'D)
You're still a pussy.
JENNIFER
Perhaps, only this time you wanted and got in it, huh?

Matt rips one of the earrings from her ear. Jennifer screams in pain and drops to the ground.
MATT
I can't believe I fell for this.how long did you have this planned?
Jennifer doesn't answer.
Matt slaps her across the face.
MATT (CONT'D)
I don't know what to call you.James? Jennifer? Transsexual homo?
Jennifer covers her ear.
JENNIFER
I meant what I said to you, did you?

Matt shakes his head and starts to cry and then breaks into laughter.

MATT
How? I let all of my feelings out to what I think is a perfect girl.but she ends up being the pussy-ass weakling James.
Jennifer continues to hold her ear as she stands up.

MATT (CONT'D)
Well, James, I said I'd give you a chance to hit me.remember, you asked me what I'd do if I saw you again.

JENNIFER
I don't want to fight you.
She cups her bleeding ear.
MATT
Why? Because you love me?
JENNIFER
Yes, I do. Do you love me?
He pulls the other earring from her ear.
Jennifer screams again as her other ear begins to bleed.
MATT
So you left for Montana and then came back as a girl? That's just sick.

JENNIFER
I didn't want to tell you.but I thought you loved me.
Matt closes his eyes and turns away.
Jennifer lies down in the grass and continues to cry.
Jennifer continues to cry as the sound of a car engine starts.
INT. CAR
Matt sits in his car and looks down at the bloody earrings in his had.

JENNIFER VO
That's the true heart of Matthew Tracker.opening up from it's enclosed space.
He clutches the earrings and closes his eyes.
MATT
(whisper)
I have never met anyone like you before.

JENNIFER VO
I-
MATT
(whisper)
You're amazing, you're unreal.I love you.
EXT. PARK--CONTINUOUS
Jennifer's eyelids flutter.
She looks ahead as a pair of shoes comes in front of her. A pair of hands reaches down to her.

An ambulance siren wails as it pulls in front of the building.
INT. HOSPITAL ER
Jennifer lies on a bed with her ears taped and gauzed. Her right arm has an IV unit.
Monitoring equipment beeps
A hand holds onto hers as she lies asleep.
MATT (OS)
I want to say I'm sorry.
Matt stands up and leans over her. Jennifer lies motionless.
MATT (CONT'D)
I know why you told me.you wanted me to know. You didn't go behind my back like everyone else does.even though I did all those things to you then.and now you still put up with me.knowing all that you do about me.
He takes her other hand.
MATT (CONT'D)
I hope when you wake up, we'll be able to-

He takes the earrings from his pocket and places them in the table next to her.

MATT (CONT'D)
I won't care what they say, Jennifer.we won't care, because it won't matter who you were.it's who you are now.to me.
He stands up and looks at her one more time.
MATT (CONT'D)
I love you.I-
He hits the wall with his fist and walks into the hallway. INT. HALLWAY
Crystal turns the corner, followed behind by Lydia and Ryan.
CRYSTAL
Jennifer!
Crystal looks at Matt.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
What did you do to her? Where is she?

MATT
(whisper) Room Six.
Crystal watches Matt walk away.
INT.CAR
Matt sits in his car and holds his hands in his face.
RYAN (OS)
How is she?
DOCTOR OS
We're unsure of her condition.she tried to say she was on a long list of medications? Correct?
CRYSTAL OS
Yes, she is.
DOCTOR OS
She's pretty weak.we have her on an IV unit, we'll do what we can.

He then slams his hands on the steering wheel multiple times and cries.

INT BEDROOM
Crystal sits next to Jennifer along with Rachel and Lydia.
Jennifer sits up slightly.
RACHEL
Are you feeling better?

She nods.

CRYSTAL
You've had several deliveries to the house once you got home.

Crystal points to a barrage of presents in the corner
JENNIFER
From who?
CRYSTAL
The cheerleaders, some of the teachers and the same person who gave you those.
Crystal points to the earrings on the desk. Jennifer touches her ears and then lies back down.
JENNIFER
He doesn't really want to see me again, he-

CRYSTAL
Don't be too sure about that.
The doorbell rings.

LYDIA
He's been coming over here, but you've been so out of it.If that's him, do you want to see him?
JENNIFER
(to Crystal) Do I?

CRYSTAL
Of course you do.

Rachel pats her arm and hugs her. She then leaves with Lydia.
CRYSTAL (CONT'D)
I felt so jealous of you.
JENNIFER
Why?
CRYSTAL
You got what you wanted.you did what you wanted to do.and then I went ahead and made you feel all noble and-

JENNIFER
No, the noble thought was mine.I figured if Matt was being honest with me, I should try to be honest with him-and look what happened.
MATT (OS)
I hated what happened.
Crystal turns to see Matt standing behind her.
MATT (CONT'D)
Can you give us a moment?
Crystal nods as she looks at Jennifer and walks backward out of the room.
She closes the door.
Matt stands a few feet away.
MATT (CONT'D)
I came to visit you everyday. I lied to them about who I was.
JENNIFER
What did you tell them?
MATT
That you were my fiance. It worked until your Uncle told them otherwise.
Jennifer nods.
She looks at all the presents in the corner

From you?

Yes.
She glares at him.

Why?

JENNIFER MATT
JENNIFER MATT

I don't expect you to forgive me, I-

JENNIFER
Did you mean what you said at the hospital?

MATT
Did you hear me?
JENNIFER
Off and on.do you really love me, still.even though-
He leans over and takes her hand.
MATT
I fell in love with the girl I'm looking at now.and if she would take me back, I sear that from this moment on I will never let anything happen to you.

She closes her eyes and then looks back at him as he takes a flower from a bouquet in the corner.
Jennifer sits up and holds her hands out.
MATT (CONT'D)
A gesture from the hopeless romantic who cannot speak his heart.

Jennifer takes the flower and sets it down as she moves to hug Matt.
She kisses his cheek.
JENNIFER
And for the other.

MATT
And no matter what happens, I'm not going--
She kisses his lips.

MATT (CONT'D)
To let anything happen to you, I-
She kisses him again.
MATT (CONT'D)
I mean if-
Jennifer puts a finger to his mouth.
MATT (CONT'D)
I love you.
She smiles at him.

JENNIFER
That's all you had to say.

An interesting story. I just

An interesting story. I just hope it does work out well in the end and I do hope that Matt does not run around telling everyone about Jennifer's past. I doubt seriously that either Crystal nor Ryan will. They will feel too ashamed, as if it is somehow their fault.
If James's mother and he found out about the other family, I would have legally gone after EVERYTHING he owned or would ever own. Last time I checked, bigamy is still a major crime. Plus thinking about it, the other wife and family could also go after him as well.

The script was re-written

The script was re-written into a book form that answers a lot of the questions never did, such as how the sisters (Lydia and Rachel) handled things.

OK, Love Isn't Rational...

...but for your former bully to tell you that he had nothing against James but in effect made it a policy to prey upon the weak and helpless -- with no indication that he regrets doing that or has changed that general policy -- doesn't seem to make him someone you'd want to get to know better.

So although I did feel moved by the payoff, I didn't sympathize with Jennifer as much as I'd have liked to.

This was adjusted in the book

This was adjusted in the book form of the story as it gives more of a focus on why Matt turned out who he was.
