The next morning, the six of us shared breakfast with Melody’s mom. (I had oatmeal. Not just because I am now a unicorn, I always loved it.)

After breakfast, Melody’s mom asked Ari to take the girls into the living room to watch TV while Melody and I were asked to help do dishes.

Warner Wallace lives in a world where to be recognized for anything you have to be a mutant or beautiful. What will happen if a bullied nerd suddenly became the most powerful and beautiful mutant of them all?

After-credits are practically expected these days, as are inevitable sequels used to set up wider universes over time.

That being said, sometimes an after-credit scene or twelve can help soften the blow of a rather abrupt ending, right?

As it happened, the next couple of days made me wonder about how exciting things were gonna be for me. All I had to deal with was being a girl in junior high, which probably was “excitement” enough, considering.

Then on Friday, Melody told me her family was going to be hosting a “guest” over the weekend, and I was invited to come over on Saturday.

It wasn’t that Natalie hated Christmas; she could never be that cynical. In the face of blinking lights, baubles, and ornate decoration she stared ahead, and traced the steps between her flat and the office. As far as she was concerned it was a day like any other.

Her hands balled in the pockets of her coat - one pressed against the phone, the other grabbing lint - while she pressed through the carols in the air. She smiled tightly, threw a dollar into a charity bucket without a thought for who they collected, and marched on. How could she begrudge them for trying to spread joy?

Despite the fact no one at school remembered the “food fight”, I discovered that there were some changes in people the next day. Boys especially, were looking at me differently, but even some of the girls seemed to be more aware of my existence than before, even though I had returned to a more “tomboy” look.

The inside of the restaurant was cool, even through Nathan’s (Tyler’s) sweatshirt, and dimly lit. There weren’t a lot of people about, possibly due to it still being nine in the morning. Nathan had made sure that the restaurant was open before he came, but it was only now occurring to him how odd it was for a Chinese restaurant to be open so darn early in the day.

I shyly came out of my room in a dress, and my mother dabbed her eyes as she looked at me.

“Mom?” I asked, “Are you ... crying?”

“Well, it's just ... you look beautiful.”

“Well, I guess that’s good, right?”

“Sure, but you’re going into highschool next year, and then maybe college, and .. well, dont grow up too fast, okay?”

“I just want to get through today. Dont worry mom I’m in no hurry.”

We hugged.

This took longer than I wanted it to, but I'm getting a better pace to my writing, so hopefully that speeds things up for everybody. Get ready for a rollercoaster.

This chapter hopefully explains what happened last chapter. There's a fair amount of tension between the school and Atalanta with Manny siding with Atalanta and leaving Sam walking a fine line.

As always I want to thank Ashleigh for her editing skills. It would be mostly unreadable without her as grammar is not my strength.
