CHAPTER 37
The pattern of my life was set for the next year and a half, and to be honest, it wasn’t that bad. I worked hard in the week, putting in the hours at both the training centre and the local haulier, Mossman’s, that Dad had passed my care onto. There is more to driving a freight lorry than sitting behind the wheel, and Mossman’s gave me a decent apprenticeship in those extras. Their fitters talked me through the basics of maintenance, so that I could make a half-decent guess at the cause of a problem, and perhaps solve it without needing to call out a fitter or tow truck, but that wasn’t all of it.

I thought we were happy. I am not sure that any marriage was perfect, but I thought we were happy. I just could not understand why he would disappear and leave me and the boys behind.

It was the day after we returned from holidays together. For some reason he had not had a haircut for months and had grown what for him was a fairly substantial beard. He had said that he was going in to town to have a haircut and a proper shave before starting back at work the day after. He just never came back.

As I was about to sit down. I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my balls. A searing pain in both, at the same time. My hand went immediately to my groin. But no, there was nothing there. Just the slit below my trimmed bush, with the nubbin poking out between the folds. No balls. Long gone.

CHAPTER 36
So many changes to my life began that day. It wasn’t just the stress and challenge of learning to handle multiple tons of recalcitrant wagon, but the solitude I was left with in the Cannock house.

Mam and Dad were back on the road a week after dropping me off, for the simple reason that we needed the income, and that was how we got it. I had Carol and Peter next door, of course, which meant a regular meal in their company, as well as the steady supply of my drugs and hormones. That actually brought another major change in everything, as Carol insisted I had to go straight, which threw me for a second. She caught my expression, grinning happily.

“No, woman! Not wearing a twinset and listening to Cliff Richard! Have you registered with a GP yet?”

I had no idea how convoluted the family court system was. Even though Chuck told me every time I had to come into his office to sign a paper and, of course, write him a check. I went to therapy sessions, my wife went to therapy sessions too and if I had down a quarter of the things she accused me of doing in those meetings I would have either shot myself or, if I was a major scumbag, congratulate myself on being an outstanding player in the BSDM game.

Chapter Two

The sky was nickel green even through the sepia, and the atmosphere overhead above seemed to boil. There was no sun to speak of, only the glow of LED's from a million different monoliths that made up the skyline. They dominated everything and were singularly brutal. Little care was given to aesthetics; this was entirely unlike the cities he remembered.

6. An Endless Skyway

Anika couldn’t believe the information Carla gave her and Gina about Mr. Hunger. He was a former special op’s agent and was high up in the Hunter organization structure. Normally, Mr. Hunger was the one the Hunter’s sent to take out specially targeted individuals.

Carla figured that the higher-ups were not liking what was happening to certain members and to their assets. Since she left, she had been destroying locations that belonged to them and attacking some of their hit teams as well. She informed Gina and Anika that she blew up three of their training centers.
